Title: A 21st birthday present
Post by: bent on June 27, 2018, 10:56:46 PM
Thought about putting this in the tooling section...but maybe it's better here.

As #3 son has reached drinking age come this weekend, I decided to whip up a prototype bottle opener.  Every bottle opener I've had (except for the original type of church keys) have suffered from the biting edge of the tool wearing out with use.  Figured a fix for that (and a use for the worn lathe inserts I have) was an opener with a carbide insert for the bit that engages the edge of the bottle cap.  So, a couple of steps milled into a scrap piece of 1/4" thick aluminum, and a #4 tapped hole and truss head screw, and voila:

Beta version.  Production version will have the long edge of the insert spanning, so you don't have to fuss with alignment of the insert to the bottle cap ridges.  But for a beginner, maybe this will slow him down a bit?  Cheers everybody

Somehow, I don't think he will mind the extra alignment. Clever idea, just wondering if the carbide will be brittle. Guess you will find out shortly :D

I think breakages have been taken care of. It's an indexable tip, bottle opener.

I've done some pretty brutal stuff to inserts, it takes quite a whack to make them chip.  But, yes, it's indexable, and I have a few more dull/chipped ones he can replace it with, if/when.

Start with a sharp one, have a camera ready for the look on his face as it just cuts a notch in the cap rather than popping it off!!

Good idea kvom.  Or a series of "speed holes" down the frame?  Something to do this afternoon...:)

Super cool Bent, I like the idea of lighting holes on the handle maybe two different sizes....

Have a great day,
Thomas
