Just had a friend fall...shattered a lower leg bone, broke the other, and dislocated a hip.
Very dangerous stuff as you get older.
How'd you fall? I hope it wasn't one of those ...geez that was stupid...moments.

I would have thought that was the least they could do... slippery floor sounds like "unsafe" to me.

I to had a blue light trip to A&E just before Xmas bust Appendix
Jo. Got a nice well healed scar now but the histology shows up a rare cancer on the section they removed they are pretty sure they got it alll but I need more special scans to be sure, they say is a very slow growing type , we wait to see what’s next

Pleased the scar has healed up Stuart but not on the cancer :toilet_claw: :censored:
As for Surus' escape wound due to the nature of the incision I now have what my doctor terms a "Surgical Hernia" :facepalm:

This is my first problem in a very long time ok I have joint pain but this was my first stay in hospital as well as the first cut and shut job :facepalm:

That helicopter/ambulance ride I had a few years ago cost $33,000.00 for 15 minutes. There were 6 or 7 ambulance rides associated and the destination was not to vacation.

I've had one ambulance ride: The first hardest part was the bad jokes by the EMTs. "Have you been in one of these before?" (I answer, "No.") "Neither Have I..." HA HA HA.
For those not in the U.S.: Other hardest part is the U.S. overlapping bureaucracies. First Questions at E.R. are about What Insurance. I was in a building in overlapping jurisdictions when 9-1-1 was called: Two ambulances, Two fire engines, Two Police Cars showed up, Then they had to call another city (Another Fire Department) who arranged the ambulance ride. That said, all personnel treated me carefully, meticulously, and professionally. I am confident that if I was in a worse way they would have acted more quickly, so my "non-critical" condition just makes for a memorable experience and a good set of stories.
Hope this is a chuckle.

Waiting for a MRI appointment....sometime today

Recently had a knee MRI.....I had stepped off the wrong side of a pedestal whilst working on the big roller, knee went "crack" when I landed in agony. Laid still for a while then got myself home where I sat around for a few days. No improvement so Doc visit hence MRI. Some time after they drained lots of fluid off my knee and injected some sort of steroid. No surgery needed and now good as new. I hope you are able to achieve a good solution and get back to fun. Even when I had my shoulder surgery and the left arm was in a sling I could drive. I guess i could still shift steer and operate all the pedals. Hope everything goes well with surgery & all.

Where there's a will there's a way; I drove with one of those big boots on my foot when I broke my calcaneus and they told me no driving. It is probably to cover their butt more than anything.

Hospital said I was allowed to drive as soon as I could use the brakes. Insurance company said that unless Hospital/doctor had contacted DVLC then they would cover me. It was me who chose to delay things. 6 months on and it is the tummy squashing caused when driving that is the problem not the core strength.

Mines nice and pale pink :stir: healed very well , had a couple of calls from the uni by a research fellow to check on infections first the day nurse removed the clips then 30 days on
But my mill is red , lathe is blue and concert mill is cream :stir:
Just goes to show same country different advice , different insurance outfits alas no common ground ,for the record I did wait the six weeks . Linda did the driving

Sounds like we need a thread of who has the longest scar (pictures get extra points). :naughty: Just for the record.........mine is 11" with a nice intersecting 5" scar. ;)

Not sure we should go there. ;D But for what it's worth...while mine is only 5"...I did walk around for about 9 months with a tube sticking out of my chest and everyday sticking a syringe in it to squirt some saline in. I still have a supply of syringes and needles. Great for applying glue or cutting oil.
Some might say I coulda shoulda sued. But it was an unusual problem and I can't fault them for trying.
Tube is long gone. Problem is still there. :cussing:

I had a CT scan in A&E yes very quick
this is not a CT scan but a special one for this rare Cancer that the took out hence the wait for the radioactive dye to soak in, bet they rub you over with a gigercounter :zap: bit like a ultrasound but with radiation
Its not the parking fee its finding a place to park :censored: thats the bind they have built on most of the car parks at Nottingham City hospital , so to make sure we use a taxi but you have less stress
this is the rub A&E are at Queens Hospital Notthingham QMC which is served by the tram network but not City but QMC do not have the scanner :censored:
there are other methods to get there but they take a long time so darn the expense as you say save till you retire then spend it
we are well blessed with both of us doing hospital visits Linda has a very high Platelet count so taxi firm is getting a lot of business
will let you know when I know hopeful that the got it all as I was told

Well today the doctor is going to do a bit of carpentry on me. Drill some holes in the knee cap and reattach the tendons......ill type as I'm able....im told I'll be on some good stiff.....so we'll see.

My job was done just over 4 weeks and has healed up nice a bit sore , but by far the worst is they shaved my belly and the stubble is itchy

Hope it goes well. I'm currently waiting for MRI scan on my left hand. Crashed my work van into a wall mid December (black ice), crunched wheel and NSF bumper, but steering wheel whiplash appears to have done some damage to hand. Had it X-rayed - not broken :ThumbsUp:, but still middle finger on left hand does not do as its told, still quite swollen :ThumbsDown:. Just dangles slightly odd angle. If I inadvertently catch it on something it is a tad painful. Trouble is holding stuff down with left hand whilst using an air pop riveter and also a flypress is not helping. Rest it they say. But when work for self and snowed under with work that's is easier said than done. This retirement idea seams a good idea, but 68 in a couple of weeks and still regularly doing 7 day weeks. Be nice to do some model stuff, rather than site surveys and manufacture and installation of wifi cabling and hardware in warehouse and factories.

They went through to entire pharmacy first. Oxycodone e t ect. A rescue nerve block after the first pain block didn't work. So they finally admitted me so I could get the morphine......

Careful with that stuff, way too easy to get dependant on it, and you would not want to have to sell your castings to support that habit! Even with all the discussions these days about it, lots of doctors are still too willing to give large prescriptions for the stuff. :insane:

Well The first week was all about pain management. I have an 8" long incision on my knee where they "opened the hood" and reattached the tendon.
None of the pain blockers that they gave me came even close to managing the pain, after surgery they gave me an emergency pain blocker that didn't work either. As a result, I was pretty doped up last week. I'm happy to report I've pulled myself off ALL those now completely.
Not even Tylenol NOTHING.
In its current state....I'm lucky if I can sit at the computer for any length of time....Its going to be a while before I get into the shop.
I'll keep you posted, but let me tell you....Morphine works....but I don't recommend it...everything else it does to the body is pretty awful.

Sounds like you are doing well. I have to admit with me shoulder and wrist I could often tolerate the pain during the day but at night was a different story. I had to dope myself up before bed. In think I still have some oxycodone left. That was due to pulling a deltoid after getting the ok to resuming normal life. I made the mistaken attempt to do the same weights at the YMCA as beforehand.

Week two. And I've received my power recliner which helps a lot just getting up. Pain is very low. My shoulders and arms are taking beating by the crutches. But I'm getti g stronger. Though I pinched a nerve last night that felt like an electrical short circuit. Damnest thing ivs ever fslt two more weekes and i can start to get some motion.

Man I can relate to the electric shock feeling. Had that happen in my neck and was paralyzed on the left side. I could only move one finger. I ended up getting 3 disks trimmed away from my spinal cord. SO make sure you mention that feeling to the doctor. Hopefully it was nothing critical.

The pain was simultaneously in my right thigh and across my right hip, my right shoulder, and back of my upper arm and in a band across the top of my scalp and feeling nauseous all at once....take the load off my arm and it goes away....never felt anything like it.

My leg is in a brace locked straight. I can only travel by cargo van currently. It will be like that for another 2-4 weeks...and then they will start moving it a little bit at a time. Sitting because of this is also difficult. Really wish I could have gone. Next year.

Radius and Ulna in my left arm is mostly stainless steel from a motorcycle accident April 1st, 1994 (no NOT my fault).
It was painful to do PT but as long as the therapist moved the painful areas slowly so I didn't have any sharp jolts of pain I had no problems with it, witch surprised them very much - maybe that will work for you too.

Well Melissa treated me well today ...didnt hurt a bit.. my anxiety was high....but I found it unfounded.
3 months of PT....twice a week and hour at a time.
Today was 30 degrees motion....theyll add more later....

As we get older, remembering to zip up becomes more problematic.

Scar looks same size of mine and is healing well like mine . No I will not post a pic of mine as it extends down to the pubic bone area and straight though the belly button

Saw bones gave me 40 degrees of motion yesterday from locked straight. Ill get 10 to20 degrees per week from here on in. 3 or 4 more weeks and I'll be able to drive again....

I have had both knees replaced. Before the surgery I watched a you tube video of the replacement. it is indeed a carpenter operation- starting with a stainless steel sawzall. The new knee comes with a holding fixture which the doc uses to position the knee correctly, then he uses a small sledge hammer to seat it.
I asked my doc if that was the way he did it and he assured me it was.
As to the scar, mine started out rather prominent, but now about 4 years later I have to look hard to find it.
I had both done in 2 weeks, then was driving about the second week after the final operation. But of course they don't cut or break any tendons in that process. I would go bonkers if I couldn't drive for more than a couple weeks.

One reason the "primitive tools" is cleaning - as they have to be able to stay in the autoclave for some time at high temperature and pressure ....

Yup saw the knee replacement, that didn't seem to make me that queesy.....then again I wasn't on the other side.of that one.....it was.the drilling of.the holes in the kneecap that did me in.

Some have asked how the legs doin. I had PT today and is have to say he worked me today, but it does seem to be responding well. 3 to 4 more weeks and I think I'll be able to drive again.

I have the brace at 70 degrees now....so it's getting better....just starting to work on getting some strength back....this is going to take a while for sure....

Nice to hear that you're progressing - but I'm not sure I get the message .... does it mean that you now can bend the joint 70 degrees again, or that a support brace has been moved 70 degrees (from what) ..?

Yes the brace limit was extended to 70 degrees from 40 degrees. Eventually...get to 110...I hope ...

I never got full movement back in my left arm - or more correctly - the joint between arm and hand, but believe me when I say that I'm very happy about the result - if I have had the accident 10-15 year earlier, they would just have amputated my arm .... ::)
Of course we hope and expect full recovery today, but even enough to function is a blessing :Love:

OK with my brace on I got a 1/4 mile walk in two days ago. Yesterday I went to the track for the first time in nearly 3 months. A couple more weeks and the brace should be coming off....it's getting more stable every day...
This ordeal may be coming to an end!...

Doc took the brace off today, and cleared me to be able to drive....which I promptly did...including a 40 MPH E stop. I'm good to go back to work!. It's going to be another 6 months of rehab to get back to normal....but it feels good 3 months on from surgery to be able to participate in life again!

Alright.....probably last post on this subject.
Had my probably last doctors appointment yesterday. Doc says " I am very pleased with your recovery so far! If this injury had happened to a pro athlete, it would have been career ending or career altering...after surgery..It would be 6 to 9 months before any type of supervised training and they're in their 20's!!! Your healing process would have been faster if your leg was broken, or we did a knee implant, but the quad tendon is really a devastating injury, and you're about 3 months ahead of where I'd suspect you were going to be.

He says on a scale of 1 to 5....5 being "im putting a new knee in tomorrow" my knee is about a 2.5-3.0 Arthritis from 20 year old torn ACL and medial meniscus in the Engine room on a down river trip...another story. "but if it isn't bothering you I'd say leave it for later." Its not bothering me...though it lets me know it's there every once in a while.
Another 3 -6 months before the tendon is completely healed, and we'll "See where we are" he says.
The quad muscle is feeling weird sometimes when it's tired....it's like having a mild Charlie horse, that itches on the inside....it's kinda bizarre...though it gets stronger every week and will continue to do so.

I want to thank all of you for the well wishes, this was a massive ordeal for me, it was really very scary.

Glad things are ahead of schedule as far as the doctor is concerned. Hoping that will continue to improve over the next 3 months too.

Alright ....1 year update.
According to the doc, im healed....that said, im about 80% of what I used to be...its still getting stronger, and small jumps...but I don't know if it's coming back like it was.
the biggest thing was the loss of core strength. I'm a big strong guy...this thing really knocked me on my ass...and kept me there.
My arm strength is coming back, as is my back and core. the leg is about 80% and it's still hard to get out of a chair....standing for long periods exhausts me.
But I'll keep fighting it.
