What is it with the UK threats of 5 to 10 cm (yes Guys you read it right that is cm not inches ::) ) and the BBC make out it is the beginning of the end of the world :ShakeHead: They promise us because of the danger some of the Trains will have to go even slower :headscratch: and there will be less of them..... and the councils will have to get their trucks out to salt the roads :noidea:
Earlier today I was discussing this with one of my Scottish colleagues who was busy doing too much of this: :lolb: :lolb: to have a sensible discussion... it was so embarrassing ::) A couple of little flecks he tells me the most dangerous thing we have down south is the idiot drivers who leave their brains at home
Hopefully we will be able to show our American cousins some of the vast snow falls we are to get over the next few days that are so terrible that they will bring our country to its knees so they too can appreciate what a dangerous climate we have this side of the pond :)
Jo
P.S. Might be a good time to put the heater on in the workshop ;)
-
It's not just a UK issue, Jo. Even here, where it does rain a lot and snows almost every winter a sea level, people seem to forget how to think or drive when it snows!! :insane:
Pete
-
That would be 2-4" for us, which in the southern USA is a lot. The northeast areas can easily handle that but would cripple us too....schools would be out, businesses closed, etc. Like your colleague says, the worst part is idiots trying to drive in it when they have enough problems driving on a clear sunny day!!! Get the shop heater going and enjoy the time there :)
Bill
-
From experience I think that if a lot of UK drivers had tread on their tyres it would be easier. When I was in Devizes (south western England) I was able to drive my VW Touran round a Transit that was sliding back down the hill towards me. My wife was able to drive her Smart to work except when the road was blocked by other abandoned cars ::)
-
IIRC on the continent Winter tyres are mandatory, not here ... and probably not worth it for the average driver.
In any case UK snow is not like other countries snow, it's YELLOW !! Very unpalatable if you happen to fall face down ... :(

We've had the same phenomenon over here lately too, Jo, ever since the TV news stations got fancy new graphics, they want to show them off every chance they get. "Oh no, its going to be cloudy! Weather Alert!"
Dingalings!
Then they send the new guy at the station out to do a remote report, and he/she is standing there talking about how awful it is, and in the background is someone out riding their bike in the mild weather....
So, send us some pictures when you get the meter of snow in an hour....! You guys with the 1/3rd size traction engines can own the streets!

Yellow snow used to be just where the sled dogs go.... What on earth are you guys powering your cars with?!?!?!?

I can't help it, that phrase always brings this to mind from the past: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-yRu5jbt3Y
We drove home from Sarasota 2 weekends ago, in Winter Storm Mateo, which turned out to be rain and fog. Not exactly our idea of a winter storm. We kept looking for the snow and ice :-)
Gerrit
-
Yeah 2 in he's of snow ...we just let it melt.
-
I remember that Gerrit, If I recall correctly, Cheech and Chong also did a bit on the phrase :lolb:. Now I don’t know if it’s global warming or this big old ball we live on doing the same thing it’s always done: changing, but, I’m sure any of us over the age of 50-60 remember winters being a lot colder and more snow. One of my childhood buddies and I were laughing during the winter Olympiad’s about how we would go out in the snow and try to emulate our team in our youth: during most of the games this year it was in the upper 60’s to the upper 70’s here and records were even broken. I have girls working for me that have never seen more than an inch or two of snow and Lord knows they don’t have a clue of driving on the crap. As Bill said; here in the South, an inch or so shuts us down today. I’ve had to close several times in the last two years because of no help being able to get there. Yet, for the first 18 years that didn’t happen, but, we had older employees. I also think that this has a lot to do with lawsuits, insurance, and the non-prepared driver. . Lord, I’m starting to filibuster :lolb: :lolb:.

Hey being from Wisconsin we are used to snow, and the idiots that forget how to drive when the first snow falls. Then lets not forget the ones that think that because they can get the car up to 70 that they can drive that speed. :wallbang:
Art
-
Well, we get snow every winter and the snowplows are busy in the winter months. Most people manage to get to work on time, 5 to 10cm is no problem. 50 to a 100cm causes a bit more of a problem especially if we have strong winds.
Thor
-
I was going to go out and take some pictures of the "snow" but other than in the dark corners of my garden where I have a little frosted flakes I can report no snow :)
Latest weather update: Media hysteria of snow fall blamed for panic food buying  Having spent nearly 1/3rd of the BBC news time yesterday reporting on the doom that was going to be caused by snow they are now claiming it will be later in the week...
This feels to me like lazy/cheap journalism: they can't be bothered to go and find a real news story so they make one up :disappointed: and in the UK the weather is always fair game
Jo
-
It's grim oop north .. :(
Could be the end game ...... never known it like this .... I think I'm a goner .... :'(
Your thoughts, prayers, Jaffa Cakes, sticky wotsits, good quality endmills, anything useful solicited.
If any more comes it will be half way up the treads on the Subaru.
Not sure that this is survivable. .....
Bye Folks ... Luv Ya ...
Dave
PS camera still on BST ... :facepalm2:
-
Looks like both Dave and myself won't be getting our bins emptied as those drifts will be too deep for the bin men to get through.
This is the chaos at high altitude within the M25 ;)
-
The Bin Fairies had just been round, bless 'em ... :-*
Private Contractors here ..
Very reliable if somewhat noisy.
Dave
-
Bin collection :headscratch:
Sorry about the lack of houses in my photo all I can offer you is our giant white balls :embarassed: As you can see no snow (and no traffic fumes to help melt the snow if it comes ;) )
Jo
-
Jo
What? My road ??
Not much traffic on it .. but it is a bus route so it gets gritted ...
Last house I had was on a quasi up-market estate built on a hillside ... never got gritted and the local Goons felt it necessary to park on both sides of the road 'cos they were too bone idle to clear their drives.
Never again ... One of the reasons I bought this one.
Dave
-
The reason you lot don't have any snow is that it's all here in Kent! In fact, quite a bit of it is in my garden (about four inches so far) and still falling.
-
That looks pretty Ray :D They are now promising it for Thursday here ::)
I am not sure my workshop heater will have achieved enough for a bit of swarf making at lunchtime. It may just about keep it above zero out there :-\
Jo
-
Same here Jo. Was planning to do the keyway on the Robinson flywheel today, but don't fancy the chances of my workshop fan heater being able to cope with the icy blast coming through the gaps in the door! That reminds me, I must make a new door next Summer.
Snowing harder than ever at the minute with no sign of it stopping in the near future!
-
Jo must be all that stored up heat in your casting collection hat is melting the local snow ;)
None falling here but as I'm only a couple of miles from the Kent Border may get a bit of rays if it moves a bit further west.
Bin men are cumming up the close as I type :)
-
Watch it on here:
https://www.netweather.tv/live-weather/radar
Click 'anim on'
You can see where it's affecting the Norfolk/Essex/Kent areas then going down the Channel.
Not much up here ... Good scheme ;D
Dave
-
I'm not impressed with the weather forecast... It says it should be minus 1 degrees outside, while they are reporting minus 6 as the current temperature :noidea: Even our local airfield is reporting minus 5 out there.
And it should be going down by another 5 degrees over night so the workshop is going to be burr.. :paranoia:
Jo
-
Just had a 15 min snow shower that’s dumped 2cm of snow
We had none before the shower
But I do remember long time ago when I was at school opening the backdoor and being greeted to a 3 foot wall of snow , but further back in time 1947 to be exact my mum told me later one that the snow was up to the top windows of a double decker bus I was too small the notice still tired 💤 after the move
That was on Trowel moor between Ilson and Nottingham
But I do agree the news hounds over report it and travel firms are to H&S conscious
Keep safe and warm
Stuart
-
Believe me, they haven't over reported it here!! Still chucking it down it large quantities. Must be something like 6 inches now.
Ray
-
well its lovely and sunny here in suffolk, only got about 50.8mm of snow, but the town of beccles is gridlocked. Will probably all melt by the end of the as it one -1 out, have cleared and gritted my elderly neighbours path anyway just in case.
to cold for the workshop but think ill take a nice sunny walk down to the pub in a bit. :DrinkPint:
-
Then again, maybe it's just a slow news day. :lolb:

If the main workshop is too cold then there are alternatives ;D

Tried most things, but not that
Mike :mischief: :mischief: :mischief:

Bet the swarf sticks to the curtains.
We've had a little bit of snow in Lichfield area this morning, but its just started again. Trouble is I'm working in Barnsley in unheated warehouse tomorrow, and in unheated offices in Pontefract at the weekend.
Go away snow, pretty please.
Colin

Good think all that snow went over to the UK, here in the normally-snowy northeast US, its a bright, sunny, warm (60F) day. Thanks for taking this one for us!

I'm with Chris, thanks for taking one on the chin for us, it's 56F here in Madison.

Art, I suspect there are some intercontinental snowballs heading our way!! :o
On such a nice day, its hard to care though...

You're so right today but, tomorrow is tomorrow and I think I'll enjoy it now and wait for that big fat old snowball later. :old:

Latest from my Scottish colleague: as the Met office has issued a red "Do-not drive" warning they have decided to close the factory and send everyone home :D
Still glorious sun down here but rather cold ::)

So you know what two feet of snow looks like :)

Bit of both here. Had almost a white-out situation earlier with the fine snow blowing about, now the sun is out ;D ..
Not going to get my mankini on for all that ... not convinced.
Dave
EDIT Now it's snowing again ... :(
PS Clock still on BST .... will wait for clocks to change now ... :)

Those are great!!
Thanks again for attracting the cold and snow across the pond for us, heading out for lunch in the sunshine here, may put the top down on the car!

You are welcome but I think this one is coming from the EU and it is the first stage of softening us up for the next round of Brexit negotiations ::)

Somebody left the bloody door to the Siberian freezer open :Director:
Tomorrow is the first of Marts and it's supposed to be the start of the motorcycle season here, so my bus season ticket terminates Friday with no hope in sight for the next few weeks :hammerbash: :wallbang:
I'm NOT pleased  :cussing:

I'm NOT pleased  :cussing:
Neither am I ... -5.5oC in the greenhouse at the moment. Probably -7oC outside excluding wind-chill ...

Hot choccy now then off to kip .... hibernation seems more attractive by the hour. :headscratch:

Chatham ski and snowboard centre has closed because of too much snow ;D

I'm missing the snow here.
Seems we're off by a month or two.
January was colder than usual. It was more like February.
February was warmer and wetter than usual. It was more like March.
Should get another snow but I don't see it on the horizon.
I fear for our trees if we get a cold snap. They've started to bud and a frost will stop that.
But without a cold snap, I fear for the bugs we'll get.
I mean...I don't fear for the bugs themselves...I mean, I don't want the bugs. ;D
-
Zee, same concerns here. It is nice that the snow is gone, and it is milder. (Just had a bbq this evening.), but, as you say, things in the garden are waking up and starting to grow, and I just know that there will be at least one more killing frost, and there goes the garden.
Cheers
Tom

Hi Team,
Just got back from a weeks camping ......err glamping, so seeing all those pictures of snow, I thought I would share a little sunshine with you all!
Photo 1, camping Kiwi, our, style
Photo 2, White Island, straight off the coast from were we were, oh those aren’t clouds in the picture it steam, the island is volcanically active & vents continuously
On Monday we went on a road trip from our camp, I took R to were Dad took us camping 50 years ago, showing my age!..went there for 5 years so haven’t been back for 45 years! It was only 400 k,s round trip but the weather was great & well the scenery wasn’t bad either! Things had changed a bit.....no gravel road for a start!
Photo 3, our lunch stop, Waihau Bay, on our way to...
Photo 4, Lottin Point, pretty nice I think, & just how I remembered it 45 years ago! When we camped here the only amenities was a creek! Now there’s a motel.
Photo 5, the old wharf at Hicks Bay, this the closest store to get fresh supplies, about 80k,s round trip.
Cheers Kerrin
-
Hi Kerrin, nice "tent".
Finally I can report a gentle dusting of snow so I can join the rest of you ;D Pictures later once it has actually covered the grass)
I think I know where I would rather be ;)
Jo
-
I ain't got no grass ... If I can't eat it, I don't grow it ! :D
2 pics:
-
Few snow flurries so far today, but lots more supposedly on the way.
Beautiful, if very cold, day yesterday. Went walking in the local woods - a real Winter wonderland.
-
What bike BTW ??
I got a few - my main bike is a Suzuki DL650 http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/photo-gallery/2004-suzuki-v-strom-650/ (http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/photo-gallery/2004-suzuki-v-strom-650/)
I do not have a picture here at work.
Nice pictures Kerrin
-
I think Jo is right, the Brexit stuff teed off the germans so bad, they had DHL send you our normal snowy winter weather, and send your weather here! The maple trees in my yard have their buds flowering out, the grass is greening up, all the birds are back.... So, this is what winter is like in England normally? Nice! :D
Too bad its not going to last here, we have a foot of snow on the way tonight. Sigh.

First day of spring :whoohoo:
Global warming wins again ;)
Jo

Pretty pictures, much nicer as a spectator though than as a participant. Spring has sprung here, 60's during the day, gentle rains, and things are blooming like crazy!!
Bill

We've had 3 or 4 snow days in the last week or so, and plenty of snow in the passes. Still too cold to work in the garage when warmth and liquor are at hand in the house... :wine1:
-
Well at least I now know where these strong winds have been blowing all the snow to, the road about 2 miles from me is closed due to 6ft snow drifts.
A couple of the local farms are on a retainer by the local council so hopefully they will get it cleared as I was going that way to work. I have used this route in the past when all the local small hilly lanes are closed as although longer is it more or less flat but the wind does blow over the fields and cause drifting on the road.
-
Weather is improving :)
Heater number two is on in the workshop I see swarf in our future :whoohoo:
Jo
-
Hi Jo
Two heaters? You sure know how to spoil your little shop elves :lolb:
How's it going with you? :pinkelephant:
Mike
-
Hi Mike,
I still have to go a day without being reminded about the op last year and no it is not just Surus sitting on the dining table fondling my engine castings for me ::)
Three months into the new year and still no new casting sets, it is so difficult :(
Jo
-
Hi Jo
Don't go lifting heavy stuff for a while. Have you thought of a zipper tattoo like Dave? :LittleDevil:
Just dug a path out to the workshop door so it will be business as usual very soon.
Mike
-
Jo, you'll be happy to hear that the snow is back over on this side of the pond again, we got almost 2 feet of heavy wet snow overnight.
Though, it will be cleared and everything back to normal in another hour or so...
-
Surrey Police posted these pics of the snow drifting across the road not far from me.
-
Hi Jo
Don't go lifting heavy stuff for a while. Have you thought of a zipper tattoo like Dave? :LittleDevil:
I had a month of having to inject every day my tummy it ended up black and blue - As they say never again :hellno:
the path to the workshop is remaining clear round here :cartwheel:

Since I will be in the UK in about a month, I hope you get this weather sorted out by then. I see Kerrin is having a rough time in NZ and I thought you should know that across the ditch in Melbourne, it is not much better. :mischief:
This is the view from my front this morning. You will note the angry sky and the treacherous underfoot conditions. :lolb: I had to put shoes on because the path was a bit hot to walk on barefoot. Expecting 32 deg today.
You all take care in the cold stuff.
Ian.
-
And in Sth Australia its near freezing at 28C and so dry its raining dust again. :Jester:

The big thaw has begun :D not before we had to cancel our model Traction engine meeting :wallbang:
I can report my workshop heater is on and its actually not too bad out there :)

Trying here but still -0.6oC :( outside ... 2.2oC in the greenhouse ...
Wouldn't care to flap your pinny about a bit would you ???
Waft some warmer stuff up here ....
Dave
-
You will have to wait Dave ;)
I need it to melt the snow on my conservatory/solar panels just enough to get the snow moving down hill so it takes with it all the target practise the local birds have deposited ::)
Edit: Just removed the glaciers off the panels I could reach with the pool cleaner - the power output has gone from 70W to over 1KW, so time to boost the workshop heating ;D Heat's coming your way Dave ;)
Jo
-
At least something good came with the snow from Russia and the East - our first ever Fieldfare in 30 years of living here. We have had Redwings before in snowy weather but this is something a bit special. Arrived yesterday, and back again today.
Ray
-
Bit of a worry here, there are quite a number of Fan Tails about the place, these little birds only come to town when there is heavy snow coming in the mountains. Not too worried yet the temp is still in the mid twenties.

Heat's coming your way Dave ;)

Good on yer, chief ...

As ever here changes rapidly. Yesterday snow, today blue skies ~10°C and 27°C on the balcony :)

16 to 20 inches of wet snow. Power stayed on here but not a lot of other places. Tough night.

Saw it on the news tonight Dave. You guys are getting slammed hard and the possibility of yet another wave coming late this weekend. They said over 1 million without power in the northeast. Thinking of you and hoping you stay warm and with power!!!

Hi Dave
Stay safe
Mike

Another beating on the way
-
It's tough here in Arizona also. It had the audacity to rain on Saturday, the third or fourth time this winter. And today, my god, we had a low of 56F and headed for a high of 82F. Forecast for partly cloudy, but right now (9AM) it's pretty sunny and the door is open for a little air.
:stickpoke:
Stay safe.
Hugh
-
Another beating on the way
As long as this one isn't as wet/heavy as the last one... I measured 14" in my backyard, and it was so heavy, I actually paid someone to snowblow my driveway instead of me shoveling it. A bearing in my snowblower went, and I said, "well, winter is over, I'll fix it in the spring when its warmer". That's looking like a bad decision right about now.
BTW - Dave and I live about 5 miles from each other, he lives in the town immediately south of Fitchburg, I live in the town immediately to the east.
-
Mike they're saying 12 to 24 inches now........
-
We definitely had more than 14 I think though it did drift a bit so I guess it's hard go say. Mike and I are in the Massachusetts attic circle we always get hammered
Dave
-
Damn Dave your just not having any luck this year bud. How is the knee coming along? Wishing the best for you buddy.
Don
-
Look after yourselves guys :)
Hopefully we have seen the last of it over here and we are looking forward to some sun
Jo
-
Have you not looked at the weather forcast Jo? Says -1 and snow for me at the weekend :(
-
I think Dave and Mike over in Central Massachusetts, may have a different idea about snowfall to Jason
Mike :stir: :stir: :stir:
-
Indeed Mike but I do have a good idea of the difference between sun and snow :LittleDevil:
I drove past where that photo of the snow drifts I posted day was taken on sunday and still snow there, just a mile or so from me.
-
Ok snow line moved a bit 12 to 18 here. 40 miles east of me 2 feet plus in Boston with blizzard conditions which is over 2 inches per hour and sustained wind speeds of over 35 mph....that in a major metropolitan area is going to make for big problems.
-
Dave, 12-18 is still a lot to me. That's more than we get in 3-4 years combined which is why we don't even know how to deal with it. Stay warm !!
Bill
-
3 years ago we got 7 feet in three weeks...thats not a typo
:toilet_claw:
I'm not going to complain to hard in case someone on the weather committee is listening.....

You forgot two elements to the blizzard definition. Visibility of 1/4 mile or less, and it has to be sustained for at least 3 consecutive hours. Parts of Massachusetts are already officially having a blizzard, and the storm is only about 1/2 over.
Here's what it looks like out my front window right now. Hard to photograph blowing snow ;)

Hay Mike and Dave,
I'm thinking of you. It sometimes gets cold over here

Cool pic there Mike
What’s the bottom pic I see a up draft carb and a 8 stak exhust manifold
I had bad icing in the carb when I did formula Ford 1600 racing look down the carb after a quick lap to see it almost blocked with ice pit crew where not happy with the water getting into the cylinders when it melted

Thats a great photo! Makes it look like a hippy Mercedes!

The Merc goes into a whimpy full 'Winter mode'... Full traction control and reduced power... Bummer.
The up draft carb is feeding a two stage supercharger (blower) and is running on a methanol/ petrol fuel brew.

My place

I like the need pic does the carb get that cold?

Hay Dave
Stay put inside. Let someone else clear the snow.
It only ices-up on cold, damp days

Well....
I am beyond sick of snow.
Where I live is a declared disaster area from the 3/2 -3/3 storm. We were in a State Of Emergency for over a week. Without power for eight days. Without cable/internet until today. The National Guard was called in.
The first storm dropped somewhere over 20" of wet snow with high winds. It was a hurricane with snow and my community was ground zero. We took a direct hit. Trees fell everywhere. There were some homes with multiple trees that fell on them. Emergency Management says that it was the worst storm ever for the area. That happened Friday into Saturday. It was followed up with a 12" storm on Wednesday into Thursday.
The first storm waged hell on our plow trucks. Multiple broken parts. That is another saga....
Edit: added a YouTube link that shows some of the area. My community was hit harder.

Bless yo hearts. I hope everybody stays safe and the power stays on; the rest you can deal with and laugh about in years to come. We had about 4” of very wet and heavy snow here in Springbucket yesterday morning. It was beautiful and by noon it was 51F and all snow gone: my kind of snowfall . Y’all stay safe and sound.
Cletus
-
Saw this one sums it up perfectly
-
:lolb: :lolb:, perfect. Do you ever wonder why in an area prone to overhead power line failures, why they always replace the damaged with more over head instead of just burying it. I accuse the lineman’s union of having something to do with here. Just a redneck POV
Cletus

And this one...

Looks like plenty of free firewood there ;D Keep warm Guys.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Jason gets the snow he wants and I am sure others will offer him theirs as well

We started on putting our local power lines in the ground in my childhood and the last ones went in some 20 years ago => we hardly ever have no mains power :praise2:
No mains power only happens here if a powerplant, transformer station or grid switch dies. I can only remember 3 times the last 30 years, where the longest was a big fire in a major transformer station and power was back on some 8 hours later.
Best wishes

It is all Jason's fault :ShakeHead: send it down to him, he wanted it :disappointed:
Just checked the garden, no snow but the wind is bitter. But there are plenty of flowers out :) Yesterday was really nice in the garden 8) Plenty of weeding done and I even managed to finish clearing out and repairing the bay in the wood store that has just been cleared :D
Just off to put in my Tomato seeds
Edit: Some old b**ger just phoned me up and laughed when I mention a couple of flecks had just been seen coming from the sky :slap:

Been snowing most of the morning here in Kent, but only laying on grass, trees and roofs. Not likely to last for long. Still coming down lightly at the minute.

Lichfield area, it keeps snowing for 5 mins, melting over next 10 mins and then starting the cycle over again. 0 degrees.
I used to like the stuff and driving in it (RS2000 Escort with LSD and snow tyres - great fun :cartwheel:) now its just a pain in the butt  especially when working away.

And over this side of the world we had cyclone in Darwin and bush fires in coastal lower NSW and SE Victoria. Quite a few houses and farm stock lost in both places which is sad but so far no reports of lives lost a bit of a blessing I guess.
Still prefer it here though with all those problems rather than cold wet snow stuff.
