Keep us updated.
Just had a friend fall...shattered a lower leg bone, broke the other, and dislocated a hip.
Very dangerous stuff as you get older.
How'd you fall? I hope it wasn't one of those ...geez that was stupid...moments.
-
Well that doesn't sound like any fun at all Dave. Hope it mends quickly and doesn't lay you up for too long.
Bill
-
Sorry to hear that Dave! The ambulance ride must have been quite exciting :o
Hope it isn't too serious and that you can recover quickly.
Kim
-
Slippery floor in a resturaunt. There I was laying there screaming....not good
-
Bad luck Dave. Hope you knee repairs itself quickly.
Did you get out before paying?
Mike
-
Well that's the pits Dave. A fall like the should of at least rated a helicopter ride! :naughty: Hope you get healed up soon.
Jim

"Clumsey Bastard"

Get better Dave!!
Pete

Hope the A&E sorted you out quick.... Over here you can be waiting for hours :ShakeHead:
Look after yourself and you will be back to W**k :toilet_claw: in no time at all. In the mean time I can recommend some swarf therapy and a bit of casting fondling on a Wallaby ::)
Did you get out before paying?
I would have thought that was the least they could do... slippery floor sounds like "unsafe" to me.
Jo
-
Dave get well soon
I to had a blue light trip to A&E just before Xmas bust Appendix
Jo. Got a nice well healed scar now but the histology shows up a rare cancer on the section they removed they are pretty sure they got it alll but I need more special scans to be sure, they say is a very slow growing type , we wait to see what’s next

Pleased the scar has healed up Stuart but not on the cancer :toilet_claw: :censored:
As for Surus' escape wound due to the nature of the incision I now have what my doctor terms a "Surgical Hernia"
Jo
P.S. What did I say a few months back about the old ones whenever they meet up discussing who is surviving with the worse medical condition :lolb: :old: :old:
-
Jo
Yes now I know what you meant
This is my first problem in a very long time ok I have joint pain but this was my first stay in hospital as well as the first cut and shut job

Sorry to hear about your fall ?Dave.
That helicopter/ambulance ride I had a few years ago cost $33,000.00 for 15 minutes. There were 6 or 7 ambulance rides associated and the destination was not to vacation.
Get well quickly.
Mosey
-
Sorry to hear about the fall.
I've had one ambulance ride: The first hardest part was the bad jokes by the EMTs. "Have you been in one of these before?" (I answer, "No.") "Neither Have I..." HA HA HA.
For those not in the U.S.: Other hardest part is the U.S. overlapping bureaucracies. First Questions at E.R. are about What Insurance. I was in a building in overlapping jurisdictions when 9-1-1 was called: Two ambulances, Two fire engines, Two Police Cars showed up, Then they had to call another city (Another Fire Department) who arranged the ambulance ride. That said, all personnel treated me carefully, meticulously, and professionally. I am confident that if I was in a worse way they would have acted more quickly, so my "non-critical" condition just makes for a memorable experience and a good set of stories.
Hope this is a chuckle.

How you feeling Dave, you seem to have gone quiet, you ok. :stickpoke:
Jo

How you doin Dave? What the verdict on the knee, good or bad news?
Mike

I heard from Dave yesterday. Nothing is broken; possibly a torn quadracept.

Jo

and I bet his eyes are to close together :stir:
IMHO its the eyes that tell the truth when in a face to face meeting
Glad its not to serious Dave I and still waiting for the scan appointment to see if they got it all
Stuart
-
Well I did tear a quad. Not sure how bad but would seem surgery is likely.
-
Bummer Dave,
I hope that all goes well for you.
Dave
-
Good to hear from you Dave. Keep us posted.
-
Thanks for the update Dave. Hope maybe there's a chance it can heal without surgery. Hang in there buddy.
Bill
-
Waiting for a MRI appointment....sometime today
-
Recently had a knee MRI.....I had stepped off the wrong side of a pedestal whilst working on the big roller, knee went "crack" when I landed in agony. Laid still for a while then got myself home where I sat around for a few days. No improvement so Doc visit hence MRI. Some time after they drained lots of fluid off my knee and injected some sort of steroid. No surgery needed and now good as new. I hope you are able to achieve a good solution and get back to fun. Best Wishes Terry
-
You should know a lot more after the MRI Dave. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be good news!!
Bill
-
Hang in there Buddy
-
Damn Dave, I am sorry to hear about this. My sincerest wishes for a speedy recovery.
-Bob
-
The quad is torn about 95%. I will need surgery. 6-8 weeks without driving....
-
Wow Dave, so sorry to hear that...was hoping for better news as I am sure you were also. Best to get done what is necessary though.
Bill
-
Just read this Dave :o
But hey, look, laying on the floor in agony in a restaurant is not the (best) way to get out of paying the bill ::) - Whiskey would know of course ;)
All the best for a rapid recovery mate, hope you are back in full control of the old pins soon - no driving is a real bummer :-\
Regards - Tug
-
Dave,
Don't you know that us old guys need to limber up with stretches before doing slippery floor gymnastics --> :lolb:
Good luck with this.
Alan
-
Oh Dear, I feel for you ...no driving, etc. :'( 8 weeks will soon pass keep smiling and doing what the Docs say!
Best Wishes Terry
-
Sorry to hear this.
You probably don't need me saying this...follow the doc's instructions and most importantly...follow through on the therapy that follows...to the t.
-
Dave,
Even when I had my shoulder surgery and the left arm was in a sling I could drive. I guess i could still shift steer and operate all the pedals. Hope everything goes well with surgery & all.

Where there's a will there's a way; I drove with one of those big boots on my foot when I broke my calcaneus and they told me no driving. It is probably to cover their butt more than anything.
Hang in there buddy, I hope that you heal quickly.
Dave

When then did my opp in December the hospital advised 6 weeks , but they also said check with your insurance company or you could be driving without any cover,
We all know what wriggly outfits they are
As mine was a vertical tummy cut about 200mm it could have affected my core strength for control
Stuart
-
Dave: the sooner they do the surgery the sooner you will be getting better :)

Competition ::) Surus' escape route is 9" long  and it is still red :disappointed:
Hospital said I was allowed to drive as soon as I could use the brakes. Insurance company said that unless Hospital/doctor had contacted DVLC then they would cover me. It was me who chose to delay things. 6 months on and it is the tummy squashing caused when driving that is the problem not the core strength.

Mines nice and pale pink :stir: healed very well , had a couple of calls from the uni by a research fellow to check on infections first the day nurse removed the clips then 30 days on
But my mill is red , lathe is blue and concert mill is cream :stir:
Just goes to show same country different advice , different insurance outfits alas no common ground ,for the record I did wait the six weeks . Linda did the driving
Got to go for a special scan to see if they got it all next week not looking forwards to the appointment after that
Dave hope they sort you out in quick order and you are soon back on your pins

Mines nice and pale pink :stir: healed very well ,
Eric says that Pink may be a better colour description but it is not the "faint white line" I was promised :disappointed: yet
Most of my machines are shades of Elephant Grey ::)
Dave: have you worked out what you are going to be doing while off on the Sickie? Maybe your Wallaby would like to see more of you :naughty: ... I assume you will be paid for the time off :)
Jo
-
Depends on work and my mobility....my shop is very cramped
-
Wallaby is on the list...but again....we'll see how a full leg brace works in the shop....I'm doubting it....
Dave

If you can get in the shop...it doesn't matter what you do...so long as you're enjoying what you're doing or not doing. ;D
Had a bum day today myself...got in the car, turned on the radio...and immediately 'End of the Line' began playing.
I was smiling all the way home.
"Well, it's all right".
My favorite line..."even if you're old and gray...you still have something to say".
I always forget myself...but don't sweat the small things. And they're all small things.

Sounds like we need a thread of who has the longest scar (pictures get extra points). :naughty: Just for the record.........mine is 11" with a nice intersecting 5" scar. ;)

Not sure we should go there. ;D But for what it's worth...while mine is only 5"...I did walk around for about 9 months with a tube sticking out of my chest and everyday sticking a syringe in it to squirt some saline in. I still have a supply of syringes and needles. Great for applying glue or cutting oil.
Some might say I coulda shoulda sued. But it was an unusual problem and I can't fault them for trying.
Tube is long gone. Problem is still there. :cussing:

Good luck tomorrow Stuart
Jo :old:

Thanks Jo
Stuart
-
I am sure the 4 hours is just a means of increasing the car parking fee ::) With my CT scan it was not that long
Jo
-
I had a CT scan in A&E yes very quick
this is not a CT scan but a special one for this rare Cancer that the took out hence the wait for the radioactive dye to soak in, bet they rub you over with a gigercounter :zap: bit like a ultrasound but with radiation
Its not the parking fee its finding a place to park :censored: thats the bind they have built on most of the car parks at Nottingham City hospital , so to make sure we use a taxi but you have less stress
this is the rub A&E are at Queens Hospital Notthingham QMC which is served by the tram network but not City but QMC do not have the scanner :censored:
there are other methods to get there but they take a long time so darn the expense as you say save till you retire then spend it
we are well blessed with both of us doing hospital visits Linda has a very high Platelet count so taxi firm is getting a lot of business
will let you know when I know hopeful that the got it all as I was told
a worried :old: Stuart

Good luck Stuart
Dave

Thanks Dave
Still waiting for any news

Well today the doctor is going to do a bit of carpentry on me. Drill some holes in the knee cap and reattach the tendons......ill type as I'm able....im told I'll be on some good stiff.....so we'll see.
Dave

Hang in there Dave. Hope all goes well and that you will be back on your feet soon!!
Bill
-
Ouch Dave
Thought my five hour table time for replumbing sounded rough but that sound like it may be sore
How long will you be in a leg brace ?
My job was done just over 4 weeks and has healed up nice a bit sore , but by far the worst is they shaved my belly and the stubble is itchy
Best of luck
Stuart
-
6 to 8 weeks before I ca drive a car
-
Go get it done Dave  8 weeks will be over before you know it.
Don't do what my friend's Mum did and ask to have (her knee joint replaced under) a local.
Surus and I are thinking of you.
Jo and :pinkelephant:
-
Have to get it done Jo...got no choice leg doesn't work......its like running a piece of construction equipment with one of the hydraulic cylinders removed.....I tell it to move and nothing happens
-
Steamer,
Hope it goes well. I'm currently waiting for MRI scan on my left hand. Crashed my work van into a wall mid December (black ice), crunched wheel and NSF bumper, but steering wheel whiplash appears to have done some damage to hand. Had it X-rayed - not broken , but still middle finger on left hand does not do as its told, still quite swollen . Just dangles slightly odd angle. If I inadvertently catch it on something it is a tad painful. Trouble is holding stuff down with left hand whilst using an air pop riveter and also a flypress is not helping. Rest it they say. But when work for self and snowed under with work that's is easier said than done. This retirement idea seams a good idea, but 68 in a couple of weeks and still regularly doing 7 day weeks. Be nice to do some model stuff, rather than site surveys and manufacture and installation of wifi cabling and hardware in warehouse and factories.
Regards.,
Colin

Painful. Had me on morphine over night.
Supposed to go home today.......well we'll see

Dave
Hang in there ,enjoy the morphine :) I was out with the fairies for a few days
Hope you get home PDQ you will feel better at home
Stuart
-
I opted for plenty of morphine: I decided better not have any pain or to think about what they had done
Also makes the time go faster ::)
Jo
-
They went through to entire pharmacy first. Oxycodone e t ect. A rescue nerve block after the first pain block didn't work. So they finally admitted me so I could get the morphine......
-
OK HOme .....on Oxycodone....in higher doses....that's working now....working on my mobility.....it's going to be a long road....
Dave
-
Pleased to hear you are home Dave :cartwheel:
I recommend a bit of casting fondling... It helps with the motivation for recovery ;)
Jo

Dave
Careful with that stuff, way too easy to get dependant on it, and you would not want to have to sell your castings to support that habit! Even with all the discussions these days about it, lots of doctors are still too willing to give large prescriptions for the stuff. :insane:
Hope you are back shop-ready soon!
-
Good to hear you are home Dave.
Bill

Good news Dave
I am still waiting for scan results
Stuart

For the first couple of weeks Ltd. My only option...i can back off after.

Well The first week was all about pain management. I have an 8" long incision on my knee where they "opened the hood" and reattached the tendon.
None of the pain blockers that they gave me came even close to managing the pain, after surgery they gave me an emergency pain blocker that didn't work either. As a result, I was pretty doped up last week. I'm happy to report I've pulled myself off ALL those now completely.
Not even Tylenol NOTHING.
In its current state....I'm lucky if I can sit at the computer for any length of time....Its going to be a while before I get into the shop.
I'll keep you posted, but let me tell you....Morphine works....but I don't recommend it...everything else it does to the body is pretty awful.
Dave
-
Thanks for the update. I think there was a song or something back in the day about a quarter for the morphine and fifteen cents for the beer  8). Rest your mind and let your body heal: old Native American proverb :old:. Now, when you want some brain activity, I have a little design work I need to get done. Luv y’all and give William a little Facebook poke for me. Y’all come see us now you hear. Luv y’all
Cletus
-
Dave,
Sounds like you are doing well. I have to admit with me shoulder and wrist I could often tolerate the pain during the day but at night was a different story. I had to dope myself up before bed. In think I still have some oxycodone left. That was due to pulling a deltoid after getting the ok to resuming normal life. I made the mistaken attempt to do the same weights at the YMCA as beforehand.

I am happy to hear that you are on the mend.

Week two. And I've received my power recliner which helps a lot just getting up. Pain is very low. My shoulders and arms are taking beating by the crutches. But I'm getti g stronger. Though I pinched a nerve last night that felt like an electrical short circuit. Damnest thing ivs ever fslt two more weekes and i can start to get some motion.
-
Man I can relate to the electric shock feeling. Had that happen in my neck and was paralyzed on the left side. I could only move one finger. I ended up getting 3 disks trimmed away from my spinal cord. SO make sure you mention that feeling to the doctor. Hopefully it was nothing critical.
Take care and feel better!
-
Dave
Glad you are improving , I have been on crutches for the last 10 years , I think my shoulder/arms are my best bits
Stuart

And I've received my power recliner which helps a lot just getting up.
 They are very useful we had those in hospital, came home to not have one and needed someone to help  until I learnt how to do it without using the muscles they had cut
Look after yourself Dave, we are all here for you :)
Jo

Didn't want to buy one Jo, but didn't want to damage my good knee getting up out of the chair......much better. Worth the money.
-
Dave
Glad you are improving , I have been on crutches for the last 10 years , I think my shoulder/arms are my best bits
Stuart
The pain was simultaneously in my right thigh and across my right hip, my right shoulder, and back of my upper arm and in a band across the top of my scalp and feeling nauseous all at once....take the load off my arm and it goes away....never felt anything like it.
-
Good move on the recliner Dave. Sounds like things are better other than the odd electrical pain. Hope that was a non-recurring event. Hang in there bud.
Bill
-
We missed you yesterday at the NEMES annual show. A couple guys asked about you and I said I figured you were just home laying around in a new recliner. ;D
Oh well, there is always next year.

Oh well, there is always next year.
My leg is in a brace locked straight. I can only travel by cargo van currently. It will be like that for another 2-4 weeks...and then they will start moving it a little bit at a time. Sitting because of this is also difficult. Really wish I could have gone. Next year.

First day of PT foday.......not looking forward to it....
-
Hope it goes well Dave and that your therapist isn't one of those overly sadistic ones :) HOw long does the PT go on?
Bill
-
First day of PT foday.......not looking forward to it....
I've had PT several times. It sucks, but it works. Stick with it. Just remember, that which does not kills you makes you stronger. Mike
-
Radius and Ulna in my left arm is mostly stainless steel from a motorcycle accident April 1st, 1994 (no NOT my fault).
It was painful to do PT but as long as the therapist moved the painful areas slowly so I didn't have any sharp jolts of pain I had no problems with it, witch surprised them very much - maybe that will work for you too.
Best wishes
Per
-
Well Melissa treated me well today ...didnt hurt a bit.. my anxiety was high....but I found it unfounded.
3 months of PT....twice a week and hour at a time.
Today was 30 degrees motion....theyll add more later....

If you're going to go that way...(a zipper)...then make it unzipped.
As we get older, remembering to zip up becomes more problematic.
May as well celebrate it.

Good to hear Dave. Tattoo huh? That means the kids can get one too if they want ;)
Bill

Actually that's why I want one. When my daughter gets old enough she's going to get one. If I get one with her, I get to approve where she gets it. Who's controlling whom? 8-)

Good thinking there Dave :)
Bill

I was instructed to periodically take all the gear off and let it rest quietly for a couple of hours as it helps with circulation.....gonna be a nice scar.....

Bare male flesh :paranoia:
I was told to use Elephant escape wound oil Bio-oil on my scar. I am not sure if it is doing any good :noidea: But you fellas may want to maximise the impact of your scars for sympathy ;)
Looks like it is healing nicely Dave :)

Dave.
Glad you are doing well and the PT is not to gruesome
Scar looks same size of mine and is healing well like mine . No I will not post a pic of mine as it extends down to the pubic bone area and straight though the belly button
Jo guess what you were not wrong when you said scan results take ages still waiting coming up to six weeks now since they made me glow in the dark :Jester:
Hope things progress well and you are back on your pins

Bill

No haven't even been in the shop....its too treacherous to get around out there with crutches.

Nice scar dude  . If you don't go with the zipper tat, a chain and anchor one would do nicely as well :stickpoke:. Boy, I bet you are really missing having to deal with the weatha up yuh way today eh? :mischief:

Saw bones gave me 40 degrees of motion yesterday from locked straight. Ill get 10 to20 degrees per week from here on in. 3 or 4 more weeks and I'll be able to drive again....

Hey , Dave I just read this thread.
I admit have not been hanging here a lot lately.
Wow slip on the floor and out of work for months.
Get well my friend hope you feel better soon.

-
Dave,
The zipper tattoo or even the Frankenstein stitches would be good. But wait till its no longer sensitive. I have to admit that your scar is twice as long as the one I have on my shoulder.
Art

Alternate tattoo that would be fun at halloween - zipper with a hand coming out one end to unzip it... :o
Could always draw that part on with a pen for the holiday...

Just watched a surgeon do this procedure on youtube....

There's a good reason why it hurt.....

It.was.more.like.watching a home.renovation show in the middle of.a.meat house....
Drills and knots and various hand tools......some off which In swear I've seen in the hardware store..

Dave,
If the Hardware store is anything like my local Dorn Hardware I believe you, they have everything. :DrinkPint: rather this than a chain saw massacre.

I have had both knees replaced. Before the surgery I watched a you tube video of the replacement. it is indeed a carpenter operation- starting with a stainless steel sawzall. The new knee comes with a holding fixture which the doc uses to position the knee correctly, then he uses a small sledge hammer to seat it.
I asked my doc if that was the way he did it and he assured me it was.
As to the scar, mine started out rather prominent, but now about 4 years later I have to look hard to find it.
I had both done in 2 weeks, then was driving about the second week after the final operation. But of course they don't cut or break any tendons in that process. I would go bonkers if I couldn't drive for more than a couple weeks.
-
One reason the "primitive tools" is cleaning - as they have to be able to stay in the autoclave for some time at high temperature and pressure ....
-
Yup saw the knee replacement, that didn't seem to make me that queesy.....then again I wasn't on the other side.of that one.....it was.the drilling of.the holes in the kneecap that did me in.

Some have asked how the legs doin. I had PT today and is have to say he worked me today, but it does seem to be responding well. 3 to 4 more weeks and I think I'll be able to drive again.

That's great Dave. It's been a long haul I know. I'm sure you are more than ready to be more mobile again too.

Nice to hear that you're progressing - but I'm not sure I get the message .... does it mean that you now can bend the joint 70 degrees again, or that a support brace has been moved 70 degrees (from what) ..?
....just starting to work on getting some strength back....this is going to take a while for sure....
Yes, and how long it takes to bounce back is getting worse with age ... :(
Best wishes

Yes the brace limit was extended to 70 degrees from 40 degrees. Eventually...get to 110...I hope ...

Eventually...get to 110...I hope ...
I never got full movement back in my left arm - or more correctly - the joint between arm and hand, but believe me when I say that I'm very happy about the result - if I have had the accident 10-15 year earlier, they would just have amputated my arm .... ::)
Of course we hope and expect full recovery today, but even enough to function is a blessing

It certainly is a blessing!
I'm feeling much better today. PT later today.

OK with my brace on I got a 1/4 mile walk in two days ago. Yesterday I went to the track for the first time in nearly 3 months. A couple more weeks and the brace should be coming off....it's getting more stable every day...
This ordeal may be coming to an end!...

Doc took the brace off today, and cleared me to be able to drive....which I promptly did...including a 40 MPH E stop. I'm good to go back to work!. It's going to be another 6 months of rehab to get back to normal....but it feels good 3 months on from surgery to be able to participate in life again!

Alright.....probably last post on this subject.
Had my probably last doctors appointment yesterday. Doc says " I am very pleased with your recovery so far! If this injury had happened to a pro athlete, it would have been career ending or career altering...after surgery..It would be 6 to 9 months before any type of supervised training and they're in their 20's!!! Your healing process would have been faster if your leg was broken, or we did a knee implant, but the quad tendon is really a devastating injury, and you're about 3 months ahead of where I'd suspect you were going to be.
….. 8)
He says on a scale of 1 to 5....5 being "im putting a new knee in tomorrow" my knee is about a 2.5-3.0 Arthritis from 20 year old torn ACL and medial meniscus in the Engine room on a down river trip...another story. "but if it isn't bothering you I'd say leave it for later." Its not bothering me...though it lets me know it's there every once in a while.
Another 3 -6 months before the tendon is completely healed, and we'll "See where we are" he says.
The quad muscle is feeling weird sometimes when it's tired....it's like having a mild Charlie horse, that itches on the inside....it's kinda bizarre...though it gets stronger every week and will continue to do so.
your's truly and moving around

Additionally, I just reread the whole thread.
Many of your have your own troubles, some far worse than I. I didn't respond to all of them, for that I'm sorry.
I want to thank all of you for the well wishes, this was a massive ordeal for me, it was really very scary.
Thanks for lending a hand to help by just being there.

Glad things are ahead of schedule as far as the doctor is concerned. Hoping that will continue to improve over the next 3 months too.

Alright ....1 year update.
According to the doc, im healed....that said, im about 80% of what I used to be...its still getting stronger, and small jumps...but I don't know if it's coming back like it was.
the biggest thing was the loss of core strength. I'm a big strong guy...this thing really knocked me on my ass...and kept me there.
My arm strength is coming back, as is my back and core. the leg is about 80% and it's still hard to get out of a chair....standing for long periods exhausts me.
But I'll keep fighting it.

Some things just take time, and the older we get, the longer they take!! I think you are doing well for 1 year out.

Doctor said I'm doing well for a 20 year old!.....LOL. I don't feel that at all!!! I feel very much the cripple.
It's amazing how frail yet resilient the human body is.....
