Title: 2-6-4 tank engine in O gauge
Post by: Rob H on October 08, 2017, 03:18:41 PM
I know that this is not a model of a steam or ic engine, but of a steam locomotive and it will finally run on 12volts dc. It is a nickel silver etched kit with lots of brass castings and only 1 white metal casting, it will be soldered together. the model is of a British Railways standard class 4MT (Mixed Traffic, means used on passenger or freight duties) I will try to post an image later when I can find a way to reduce the file size

That worked Rob but is still close to the file size limit of 500kB. Interesting project btw. I am going to move it to the "Vehicles & Models" section though since that is where Locos normally go. this will not change anything in the thread though.

Here are some shots of one of the sheets of etches (three and a half sheets in total) and one of the packs of brass castings (9 packs in total). the etch sheets are 11" x 12" or 280mm x 305mm

Rob,
Do the part require machining as well, not so much referring to the parts shown in photo 2 above but rather those in photo 1?

Some of castings will need holes drilled in them and threads tapped to suit various pins, screws and bushes but other than that no machining is required, the axle boxes are already machined for you and just require a little fitting to get the proper fit.

That's pretty cool Rob!  I've not seen a kit like that before.  Looks like a fair amount of work, but it will look great when complete!

Hi Rob, just looked up Modern Outline Kits, they do seem to do some nice kits at the upper end of the O gauge kit market.  Have you built other etched and soldered loco kits before now?  Have you got to get wheels, motor etc. in yet?, wonder what your choice is.   Dave

Here's a photo of the frames with stretchers soldered in made up from 41 individual pieces.
Donald, the kit is from Modern Outline Kits here in the UK.
Chips, I have got the wheels and axles from Slaters, plus the motor and gearbox from ABC Gears, I contacted MOK and they told me  which motor/gearbox combination and what wheelset to get, The only other things I need to get is the crank pins and electrical pick-ups

Next job is to solder up all these parts, in the next photo I'll try to remember to put a rule in the picture to give a sense of the size of the parts

So what part are we looking at Rob. Looks like it could be a leading or following truck frame?

Thanks Rob. I figured it must be something like that with the springs. Nice looking assembly.

Hi all

It's been a long time since I last posted, I haven't been idle, it's just that work has gotten in the way of real life so progress has been slow. Here is the front end and smokebox saddle

Hi Rob, nice to see an update on this!

You should show us a family shot if you get a chance sometime.  It'd be nice to see where your at with the whole thing.

Thanks,
Kim

Thanks for the update on your project, the detail and complex construction of this model are impressive and the finished loco should be a fine thing.   Dave
