Title: Playing with a 3 to 6 volt coil.
Post by: Doc on February 22, 2017, 07:43:27 PM
I'm attempting to put together an ignition package that I can use on my hit miss engines on the cheap. I do have a portable unit but I'm looking to dedicate systems to each engine so I only have to throw a switch and go. The unit I have works like a buz coil so I'm going to give it a try.
Anyway here is a short clip of it running on 4.5 volts.

PS Still fighting Strep Throat and feeling like crap! Sorry about the smudged up lens on the camera.

That is impressive. Generally, arcing can occur at about 10 kV/in, so you have at least 3 kV. Do you have a link to that module? Some of them caution to have a gap no larger than a certain distance, or internal damage can occur. Here (http://www.banggood.com/DC-3_7V-6V-To-400KV-Boost-Step-Up-Power-Module-High-Voltage-Generator-p-915426.html?rmmds=search) is a similar module rated for 400 kV with 3.7 to 6 volts input, and it cautions against a spark gap greater than 1.5 cm (0.6"). The sharper the electrodes, the lower voltage is needed to ionize the air and cause an arc. That's why high voltage equipment often has spherical or toroidal electrodes, and it's why lightning rods have sharp pointy features to attract lightning and cause it to discharge harmlessly through the ground wire on buildings.

That looks like it maybe the same gap dis is rated to 20mm this is the one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/131937939774?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) I am playing with.
