Title: Electric V-twin
Post by: Hagar on May 03, 2017, 06:33:52 PM
Hello,

Glad to present you my new creature : a solenoid V-twin engine.
My own design, made from aluminum and brass. A few parts are from machined plastic.
I tried to work on a different look, more fantasy and less industrial. Something that would take place close to my old aunt's classic clock.
Finally, it looks like an alien space ship waiting for next take off...

Short data sheet :
-4 stroke cycle : each coil is activated every 2 revolutions.
-It works From 12VDC stabilized current, but feels better on 15VDC.
-Designed not to be a silent thing. As Harley Davidson engines inspired my study, i had to make an engine with a heavy metal sound to sing. That's why solenoid plungers hit the top of their coils to emit a metallic sound. Only when they are on active state.
-Driven via classic mechanical relays, which allow different switches to power on and off.
-Speed is controlled via a full mechanical device. the length of electric power supplied to a coil sets this speed.
-Chassis includes a suspension system to keep the thing on place even at full throttle, though vibrations try to make it walk.

I'm very proud to have led this project to life. It helps me to remain the child i should not be now. Think there's also a part of chance.
I'm dreaming of a V12 version (it's possible), but maybe next project should be an IC engine. Dont know yet...

Really nice, my sort of engine. Thanks for showing it.

Just the right amount of Solenoid-Punk. Not too little, not too much.

I like it. I like it a lot ....  ;D

Very nice  8)

I hope you are going to take it along to a few shows I can see that being a real talking point, especially with the kids  :cartwheel:

Very Nice. I like it a lot. The sound is great. You have done a great job with the details in the design of your parts. I haven't thought about suspensions, but your approach does seem to keep it from walking as it runs.

Thank you,

ShopShoe

Thank you, everybody.
Very glad you like it.

Chuck : you made very beautiful engines. It's when i watched the video about your air powered V8 i decided to build my first engine (this V-twin is the third).

Jo : in GB and USA, shows of small engines exist. But here, in France, i've never heard about something equivalent. Pity...
Even people whom i show my "creatures" seem not to be really interested. A lack of iron in french blood ? :embarassed:

Yes, we have some model engine shows...
