This time, last year, I was test running one of my hot air engines on the coffee table, when Little Granddaughter trotted in......... "What dat Grandad?"
Before I could answer, Grandma said. "It's one of Grandad's engines. He will make one for you, one day." ..... Thanks Grandma! ::)
Those lovely big brown eyes turned to me. "For my birfday?" :o
What to do?? Grandad's Little Sweetheart is three, in three days time! And, she wants an engine!! :shrug:
I dived into the Come in Handy pile. And found a heavy aluminium oil pot, from some, long ago scrapped, hydraulic system.
1/4" cross hole.........

I reckoned she could safely spin the wheels. Without doing too much damage to herself, or the furniture.
So, I dismantled and boxed. Ready for the next time she called here.......

Installation and commissioning didn't quite go to plan. Though, it was fun! :)
Mia spent quite some time inspecting, and trying to make parts fit together. :headscratch:

Building/ stripping this "Lego Set" engine, kept her amused, for several months. Until I finally managed to hide it in my toy cupboard.
Has she forgotten about it, by now?

It works very well, for a temporary set up! :whoohoo:

My only worry, is what Mia will think of her engine, when she can't dismantle it........ :help:

Dave....A great idea!....I would offer one thing to think about.
Watch that pinch point where the lever goes through the outer housing slot. I bet a little finger could get pinched there.
Easily fixed...put a shroud over the opening with some nice big rounded edges...and make sure it doesn't get too close to the table top. Keep it close to the round housing and all will be good.
She'll have all kinds of fun with it!

I think that a most important part of the plan is that as much as possible Mia should be able to assemble/disassemble her engine. From the earlier pictures its obvious that assembling the thing was very much part of the fun she had.

I have always used heat treating steel, when at work, and since retiring. En24/ 36/ 39/ aisi4140 etc. But, stocks are now getting low. I've had to buy some.

David, its a great project and I know you want it simple enough for Mia to help with the assembly. I would be a bit concerned about the wooden flywheels though in terms of operating the engine with finger power. Generally the more mass that is in the flywheel(s), the easier it will be to keep running. Just something you may want to explore for when she wants to make it "run" after the assembly phase.

I have already tried the "original", with just a single flywheelwheel. No problem!
The mass of the internal crank discs is as large as possible, for the space available.
Twin 4" x 5/8" hardwood discs should be ok....... I hope!
The reason for wooden wheels is, camouflage....... Hoping Mia doesn't recognize her engine. Also, protecting Grandma's furniture.
The discs are roughed out. First test run, later today......

We are now onto a high speed Four masted/paddle wheeled boat :insane:and Im sure Iv got shares in pop pop boat engines .I need to make some press tooling as its costing me a fortune in replacement engines.

Today, I sprayed the body royal blue. Mia likes blue....... ;)
I've also let her see the new flywheels, as I'm varnishing them. "What are those Grandad?" "Two flywheels". "Oh!".......
I think, I might just get away with it. I hope! :embarassed:
I'm a little stuck at the moment, thinking of a flywheel retaining device. So, a four year old can remove and replace...... :headscratch:

Loctite a collar on with shoulder and a big coarse threaded and knurled nut....the coarser the better. She can put it on and take it off as much as she likes then.....and she gets to learn righty tighty....lefty loosey :lolb:
You could make the nut from some plastic....the collar too.
get rid of the sharp edges of course.

Puzzling how to make the flywheels, Mia manageable. I remembered, she had included the 1.5mm allen key, as part of the game.

So, I drilled n tapped the half shafts M5. She can have a couple of capheads and washers to play with!
The alloy hubs will be sleevelocked onto the half shafts, then the flywheels bored to suit.

I have made a better big end bearing, 6mm dia. As the original M4 caphead's shank, rattled in it's 4mm hole.
Unfortunately. Chief Tester, Grandma doesn't like it. "You've made it too quiet, now"....... :facepalm2:

Great video David. Seems easy enough for Mia to operate very successfully too. Im with ths though, the flywheel, as cool as it is, reminds me of the old lead in for "The Twilight Zone." :)

I concur with Jo....but she will soon forget the bad stuff, and once she gets to putting it together and taking it apart she'll be hooked!.....make sure you send home a supply of the M5 SHCS....I suspect the work shop troll lives at her house also..... :lolb:
