Ordered up a new bottom tap for the Wallaby...from Travers tool. It got delivered today. Great! Took it out of the package and tried to start it in a 1/2-20 hole, and not even close to starting...I say hmmmm, my taper tap is old and hand resharpened, I'll got down the road and get a new taper and plug tap.
The local supplier was cheaper than the Travers web store, and with what turned out to be far better quality. When I got back, I put the plug tap in, no problem. I then tried the new Travers tool bottom tap...NO GO. hmmmmm Why does it look bigger than the the other two?
I read the label etched on the side of the tap. 1/2-20 H3 4fl Btm. The plastic package is marked that as well... OK....then I measure it. It measures 0.562" ! :hammerbash: :zap:...more like 9/16-20!
I'm buying my taps local from now on if at all possible!!!
Travers is going to give me a refund....I'll let you know how that works out..

I really needed a good laugh today and you provided it.
H3 taps are a very good tolerance range too.
I have never had issues with the Travers company, but clearly something was not right.
Oneday that 9/16 20 tap will come in handy.
If you decide not to want to keep it, I will be happy to buy it off you.
I have a need to a similar thread size and pitch range. Was looking at M14 X 1.25mm pitch
but 9/16-20 will work just as well.
PM me for my address details and I can PayPal you for it.

Well that sucks, just a case of misidentification I suppose. Travers is a reputable company though and should make it good with no hassle.

Yeah I'm sitting here moiling that one over my self. I have a big selection of taps, but not a 9/16-20....so I may keep it after all...after I relabel it!!!

I usually get my bottom taps by grinding off the tip of a plug tap. :naughty:

Could be for plated or anodised threads.

What make is the tap? Doesn't Traverse just sell them? Recently I saw a post someone got a tap that had right hand threads, but left hand cutting geometry.
