Title: Mike motts new workshop
Post by: mike mott on July 15, 2019, 04:05:04 PM
After moving into the city from the Acreage the key factor for the new home was that it had to have a place for me to do modelwork that was not in a basement or an unheated garage. we found a place that had an attached garage that had been converted to an office with air conditioning.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_2821x1024_zpsqnw7vevz.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_2821x1024_zpsqnw7vevz.jpg.html)

Setting it up was difficult because I had to change my habit of having triple the space in an open area.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_2121x1024_zpscymamdez.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_2121x1024_zpscymamdez.jpg.html)

I determined that the space between the windows (facing North) was the perfect place for the desk a simple new desk

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_2820x1024_zpsju7pnc6v.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_2820x1024_zpsju7pnc6v.jpg.html)

It quickly filled up with stuff

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_2550x1024_zps4jwhbgn0.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_2550x1024_zps4jwhbgn0.jpg.html)

I was working on repairing a 6 foot long model that had been knocked over, which crowded the space along with my 8 foot overall model of a Bristol Pilot Cutter.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_4296x1024_zpsdzsofkyx.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_4296x1024_zpsdzsofkyx.jpg.html)

My earlier steam loco adventures are currently in Drawers awaiting their turn back on the bench.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/live%20steam%20loco/IMG_2145sml.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/live%20steam%20loco/IMG_2145sml.jpg.html)

I am keeping large material out in the Garage but all the small metal is in 16 inch lengths and stored in the old library file cabinet.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_0438x1024_zps0wlaxqrg.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_0438x1024_zps0wlaxqrg.jpg.html)

So it is easy to deal with cutting the metal in the corner.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_4288x1024_zpsvw7zrzry.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_4288x1024_zpsvw7zrzry.jpg.html).

All the woodworking (brown Stuff as some refer to it) tools are in the garage where I can control the dust.

Mike

Don, Bill, Dave,
Thanks I have managed to clutter it up a bit already

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7026x1024_zpsleq6kabo.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7026x1024_zpsleq6kabo.jpg.html)

and the corner for soldering is getting some fair use now.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7040x1024_zpseojfvygn.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7040x1024_zpseojfvygn.jpg.html)

It also doubles up as the old fashioned drawing space which I still enjoy even though Cad is more accurate.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7041x1024_zps54qyvn9y.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7041x1024_zps54qyvn9y.jpg.html)

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7042x1024_zpsvul9cqxq.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7042x1024_zpsvul9cqxq.jpg.html)

The pencil cabinet was given to me for helping a friend move the stuff out of the Family home after his parents had passed. His dad was Draughtsman.

The old library card catalogue cabinet is fantastic for anything that is 16 inches or less and the drawers just pull right out and can be set down on the table.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7033x1024_zps0bdpzpit.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7033x1024_zps0bdpzpit.jpg.html)

I took the drawers out of the old pine Pharmacy cabinet in the background of this picture they were used to hold bottles etc. and turned them onto their side in a new frame to make them more usable

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_2121x1024_zpscymamdez.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_2121x1024_zpscymamdez.jpg.html)

and they now can hold a lot more stuff

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7031x1024_zpshszi3sgm.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7031x1024_zpshszi3sgm.jpg.html)

which freed up the other cabinet to hold books and magazines.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_0088x1024_zpsbj5c1lof.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_0088x1024_zpsbj5c1lof.jpg.html)

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7053x1024_zpszkyspbmc.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7053x1024_zpszkyspbmc.jpg.html)

The little table is a nice spot to sit and fiddle with sorting out design stuff and the cad is also right there as well

Thanks Roger, I really am enjoying it, but I have to clean up much more often, you know how it goes, you get so involved in what you are doing and then you can't find something you just put down....

Boy, I can relate to that!  That's the only way my shop gets clean - I can't find the thing I JUST had in my hand - so I start cleaning up till I find it.

Beautiful shop, Mike!

Mike,

When I saw the first picture of the empty room I thought "I've seen that room before".  As I looked at more, I realized that I saw them over on "Model Ship World" this winter while reading about your Bristol Pilot Cutter. What a great shop! And a great model!

Hi Jim, that is interesting that you recognized the shop. Yes I have this split personality that gets lost in the world of model ships which I came to quite late in life 2013 the pilot cutter is nice because it gives me an opportunity to work on all sorts of different mini projects within the bigger one with lots of materials metal, wood , leather etc.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/kingfisher%20boat/IMG_5240x1024_zpskgabkji5.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/kingfisher%20boat/IMG_5240x1024_zpskgabkji5.jpg.html)

But my first love is the model engineering, and it is hard having the wood and the metal stuff in the same room, moving back to the city from the Acreage at the lake has created some shrinking of model workspace but at least I have a dedicated space that I can work in all year round now without having to chop wood. Mi Big sailboat is sitting sadly waiting for some TLC to rebuild the cockpit before I can take it out again.

Interesting while reading about Bill's renovation the comments about having a bench in the middle of the shop so that you can get around without having to turn it around all the time, it is nice but it definitely means you have to be careful not the smash your thigh into the corners while negotiating the low bench. I keep thinking that I need to rearrange things. It is good to organize on paper but the practical placements eventually come with the way we find comfortable to work.

Today we have been invited out to the lake to go for a sail in one of the other club members boat. so that will be a nice outing.

Bill the Pine pharmacy Cabinet was actually painted hospital green which was about 5 shades lighter than the sage that you did the bathroom in. It took a long time tostrip it all. The library cabinet is solid teak, it will never see paint as long as I am alive.

The nice thing about having most of the big cabinets on wheels is that changes are not too difficult. After two years now of getting used to the new space it was time to set things up a little differently. I had noticed that i missed working on my high workbench that used to be set behind me when i was working on the lath and mill. and I needed to get it out of just being used as a big shelf.

The big pilot cutter model was really taking up a lot of room while i am not working on it so yesterday was moving around the cabinet shop day.

First the model was moved out of the middle to the NW corner.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7162x1024_zpsjpwdjxsv.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7162x1024_zpsjpwdjxsv.jpg.html)

Next the long low bench that was purpose built for working on the ocean liner repair was then taken apart.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7164x1024_zpsplqcfljp.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7164x1024_zpsplqcfljp.jpg.html)

Next was to get the high workbench out from being sandwiched in between the pine cabinet and the storage drawers.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7169x1024_zps7ygastyd.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7169x1024_zps7ygastyd.jpg.html)

The pine cabinet was wheeled up to the storage cabinets and the top was going to be better utilized for the other boat models and bits and pieces.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7175x1024_zps78xgu8g9.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7175x1024_zps78xgu8g9.jpg.html)

Using the top of the bench that was just taken apart to add to the storage capacity on top helped. and the surface plate was put back on the high workbench where it is more useful.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7181x1024_zpsmhtgtkpg.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7181x1024_zpsmhtgtkpg.jpg.html)

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7168x1024_zpsqlt12g3t.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7168x1024_zpsqlt12g3t.jpg.html)

Which then opened up the east wall to be better used for the storage of the small parts and also to expand the cramped area used for all the soldering.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7207x1024_zpsmocmgiy3.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7207x1024_zpsmocmgiy3.jpg.html)

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7212x1024_zpsorc2xxu0.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7212x1024_zpsorc2xxu0.jpg.html)

Still a few more things to move to the garage where the dusty wood machines are but the space is now better for working on the different types of models and feels a bit more spacious I also like my new little IKEA trolly for the things like drawings and verniers etc when working at the mill.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7213x1024_zps6rzdjnnp.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7213x1024_zps6rzdjnnp.jpg.html)

now I can get back to working on the frames for the little loco

Dan, Kim, Thanks, I do feel very fortunate to have the space that I have,  as a kid growing up in England I though that one day I would have a model shop typical of some of the small wooden sheds of the day with a Myford. a drill press and a bench. 60 odd years later and here we are.

I finished the cleaning up yesterday and am no ready to mess it all up again. I took the last few items out to the garage and it feels much better. By spreading out the drawers at the soldering end and placing one of the old long bench tops on them I am able to push the other little rolling cabinet under.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7230x1024_zps018nwctj.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7230x1024_zps018nwctj.jpg.html)

And now my high bench is ready for work.

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7232x1024_zpskb2oaes7.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7232x1024_zpskb2oaes7.jpg.html)

(https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/my30mm/tools/workshop/IMG_7234x1024_zpsvlimb1ut.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/my30mm/media/tools/workshop/IMG_7234x1024_zpsvlimb1ut.jpg.html)

So that's it. Now to make it all worthwhile and finish something!

Mike

Hi Mike,
Our youngest son lives just north of Calgary, he’s been there for 6 years so we make an annual visit. We really enjoy our time. We always try & pack in visit to see something different every visit, but boy distance is a real thing!
This year we are taking my dad, he’s 92, so tripping around is going to be a bit more leisurely, however a visit to the Calgary Live steam boys is high on the cards!

Hi Kerrin
By the Calgary Live steam boys do you mean the Alberta Society of Model engineers, their main spot is Iron Horse Park in Airdrie. we have a sub group in Onoway called the Sturgeon valley Railway. it is about 45 miles NW of Edmonton.

That is not a workshop, more like a palace!!  Well done, i am very envious of you!!
When i established mine in the corner of a double garage i left space for a car which had now never been stored in there. A wrong decision that i have had to live with.

Thanks for the compliments guys. It has taken waiting 55 years to finally have a nice place to work. As a 15 year old my dream was to have a well fitted out 8 x 4 garden shed when I lived in in England. My current workshop is a sanctuary for me, and as I continue to work I notice things to improve how I use the space and so it evolves.

You have a really nice shop! And drawers! Never have too many. The other day during a long cut on my cnc I got to looking around my shop and thought how many drawers I have. So I counted them...314. And that's not counting my Kennedy top and bottom toolbox or three machinists chests.
