The next project represents a portioin of a colliery featuring a winding engine house with its mine shaft.
It will be done in two phases; the diorama portion, designed from scratch, will be posted here and then we will switch to the Kits/Castings section to continue when a casting kit arrives from England.
The diorama will literally be built from the ground up. The plan is to make a table first that will allow a mine shaft cage to pass down through it to a depth of about two feet (in 1:12 scale - 24").
The table was more difficult to build out of steel angle iron than I had anticipated. There were two ways to go with the corners; notch them or mitre them. The photos will indicate my choice - a lot of work with a hand held hacksaw!
The bolst are button hex headed.
Those books for the Textile Mill should arrive tomorrow. :cartwheel:

Great!!!! Another diorama build to look forward John. These are always fascinating to watch.

Hello JL,
If we lived a bit closer to each other I would have been glad to fab and weld that table for you.
Count me onboard for the new project.
Have a great day,
Thomas

Heck, since you're just down the road, I should bring it down! Not in the winter though. I'm getting where I don't like to drive in bad weather...

Stop hogg'in all the popcorn you guys, I wanna see too

It's really all on Kerrin and how much corn he planted....

Following along JL......interesting to find and see in your actual chosen time window [period chosen] and machinery package ..... Derek

I'll be watching, your posts are the first ones I go to usually. My only worry is where do you put these marvellous works of the engineers art.

If John's looking for places to stash them, I'm pretty sure I could find space for one or two. Rent would have to be negotiable, I can't afford what they'd really be worth.

Looking forward to seeing this one start   :wine1:
I would probably have butted and welded the table. Less sawing if you have the welding system available.
-
Thank you for your interest gentlemen.
Thomas I probably would have taken you up on your kind offer of welding the steel.
Roger, welding was out of the question for me. I have no welding equipment or experience in that area at all. I've managed to wrestle 22 1/4"x 5/8" nuts and bolts into place.
The table is finally coming together.

John:
It's been two weeks, this isn't like you. You fall down that mine shaft you're building?
Don
-
I hear the shaft has been filled in and capped :-X

Well said Jason.
This project has undergone many offsite discussions about its feasibility. It has been decided at this point to redirect my energies onto another project.
At least I will have a nice table for the new endeavour. :D
This is not to say that the idea of an engine raising and lowering men and payloads had completely died. It has simply been put on the back burner.
Thanks for asking Don.
Cheers...John

John, sometimes the best projects arrive, not as an epiphany, but as a slow fermentation that needs a little time to develop its character. I’m thinking of Chris’ Stinky hoppies that his shop elves seem to enjoy. I’m sure, once this has been given the time, it’s going to be a most enjoyable endeavor

I agree on the project ideas, but I think Zee is the only one in the world that can stomach a Stinky Hoppy, one of my elves tried on and exploded. Very messy. And smelly.

I'm looking forward to the build. The stuff I find the most interesting to see would be better described as Model Engineering projects (vs just engines) so thanks bringing such projects to the site.
-
If you ever get really ambitous, I can get you full plans for these machines and the building too:

I'm bummed this project is going on the back burner but I'm looking to the next project (with hopes this one returns).
@Chris...

It's 'Stinking Hoppie'. Your elves can't mix drinks and should stick to something they know. Do they know something? ;D

Oh.
That mispelling would explain the rabbit bits floating in the pitcher...
