Hi,
Not really an T&M question but couldn't see a better forum, please feel free to move this thread if one exists.
I want to find a source of model engineering quantities of flat bar sections of high tensile steel suitable for crankshafts, like eg EN8 or EN16 or EN24 etc. I can find round bar easily enough but really don't want the extra hassle of milling it flat first if I can avoid it.
Also, for model IC engines, can anyone tell me what grades of steel are currently considered best ?
As stated, I'm in the UK,
Boo

Hi Boo,
I'm surprised that finding En24t flat bar is so difficult. I've just tried and couldn't find anything in the usual sources. What I did find was this company - new to me that appears to have very reasonable prices for En24t round - in bright as well so will be giving them a try this year. https://jenkinssteelonlinemetal.co.uk/product-category/en24t-bright/ (https://jenkinssteelonlinemetal.co.uk/product-category/en24t-bright/)
When you ask what grades are best - what function are you thinking of? and what type of engine - I always use En24t for crankshafts on my diesel engines.
I've used various materials for liners - chrome steel, cast, etc but the best combination for all round use - both machining and running has been leaded En1a and cast as Liner and Piston combination
Sorry I can't be of more help on the flat bar but hope that's of some use to you
