Sounds like an impressive engine!  Do you have a picture of what it will look like?
Watching along!

Hi Chris, thanks for popping in.
here are some pictures and videos also.

There was a video of an American guy at YouTube, showing a test run at a show, but I canīt find it anymore.

Hello Achim,

Welcome to your new project :hi:

A V12 is an ambitious undertaking, lots of repetitive cylinder and valve gear stuff. CNC will be a great help with that.

The crankcase fixture looks good and robust, a sound basis for accurate work. Will the crankcase fixture also double up for the crankshaft?

Cheers

Mike

Mike, thanks for watching.
The crankshaft is made from several equal segments.
Similar to the Schillings design, but with smaller bearings.
It will make sense to do the assembly in the crankcase already.

I have had success silver soldering sheet stainless steel, but using an appropriate flux, Tenacity No 5.  I think it's more aggressive than the normal brew and lasts longer - but it needs a caustic pickle to clean up.

Here's an excellent video on how that same Bucyrus Erie shovel is started and how all the controls function.  You need to be able to use your arms & legs together effectively and if you screw up you have a tangled skein of cables to straighten-out and you will never hear the end of it.

Don't know anything about the cable backhoes as I never seen one.  The shovels were very good at digging into dirt and shot-rock banks and loading trucks with that material, but eventually you will need the help of a dozer where a rubber tired hydraulic loader can do it all by itself. So as hydraulics got better, these types of shovels eventually disappeared.

My dad ran an 88B during the interstate construction phase around this area.  I found the parts book and attached are two pages from it.

Hi Achim. I agree with your reasoning about choosing this engine. I too like to see as much of the mechanical motion out in the open as possible. A big project, I will enjoy following along with your progress!
