Title: GWR 517 Class Loco
Post by: mikemill on November 30, 2019, 01:52:32 PM
Recently completed a GWR 517 class tank engine to 2.5in gauge.

The engine is entirely scratch built with the exception of wheels and motor, it is radio controlled with the battery pack in the boiler space, the RX and ESC are in the bunker.

A lovely looking engine Mike, do you have a 2.5 inch gauge Garden railway?

Lovely job!!

I have a bit of an affection for these locos as I have a 7.25" gauge 14xx class and, as you'll know, they are closely related to the 517

Thank you all for your kind comments. I have an indoor G1 layout that I spent five years building, but a year ago I was going to buy a Chinese 14xx for my 70th birthday, as I prefer the 517xx I decided to build one instead, more fun and 2k still in back pocket.
The wheels are from Slaters.

Hello Mike,

These photos and your layout is awesome. Is your track a loop so that you can make an action video? :Director:

Have a great day,
Thomas

Mike thank you for posting these, The GWR is close to my heart having grown up just 5 miles down-line from Paddington, I spent many hours as a young boy trainspotting at a bridge in Acton W3. The layout and the other locos and rolling stock look fantastic.

Absolutely fantastic!!

I have an autocoach and Toad, in 7.25" gauge, to go with my 14xx but they are nothing like the standard of your creations

Your comments are appreciated, G1 is normally used as garden layouts because most use live steam. I was impressed by the size of the engines in G1 and thought of building a layout like the finescale modelers in smaller scales. The layout end to end is 30ft in length, a loop would be nice but I don’t have a room big enough.

Mike, interesting you spent your youth trainspotting I was born 10min walk from Paddington Station, and was my playground, I know every inch of it.
So, it was inevitable I became a GWR man, I am now building engines to G3 (2.5in)
and considering a steam rail motor as I made all the drawings in G1 I just need to rescale!!!

Mike I was born in the Paddington hospital right next door to the station I think my first breath was of the steam oil mix drifting in the open window. :lolb: that was too many moons ago but the addiction is hard to quit!
