Title: Things to do under Lockdown.
Post by: Jo on April 11, 2020, 10:59:51 AM
As all of us are finding we have a lot of time on our hands and do not necessarily want to be in the workshop I thought it might be worth opening a thread about other things to do:

This morning as I sat eating my breakfast I was serenaded by a very, very loud Wren who was easily spotted sat on the feeding stand outside my dining room doors about 6m away from me.

Learning bird song is something I keep meaning to do and some time ago I managed to find a website that had all the common UK bird song and had down loaded it to try to learn them... Of course no one has enough time for such good intentions until now. So I decided to find the Wren song in my recordings and see if it was the same. It was and even better the Wrens in my garden replied to it  :cartwheel:

I have tried various bird songs: most will get a response and the best bit is I know what type of birds are responding to me  :whoohoo:

Hi everyone

It seems now is the right time.....

I have complete volumes of ME from late 60's through to 1999. They take up so much space and I am thinking of a cull....which breaks my heart.

Option 1 do nothing but put up with them taking up the space...a few articles are interesting but so many are not.

Option 2 cut out and remove those articles that I find useful and collate into one or two indexable files, and discard the rest.

I am not and never have been interested in building locos, my interests are clocks, tools, stationary engines and anything by G H Thomas and Tubal Cain.

So started looking at 1966 and 1967...so much verbiage about miniature loco's, apart from the odd article by Duplex and E T Westbury there is nothing that is worth keeping....

I am interested in ideas and suggestions but also what do others do with their piles of ME magazines. I don't think volumes of these are worth much to be honest....even less if i have cut a load of articles out of them!

I am looking at option 2..with thought think of all the space I will have.

Regards to all and keep healthy

Del

I have the same dilemma as Del, with Stationary Engine magazines going back many years. I refer to them on the very rare occasion and, sad to say, they will probably end up in the recycling bin unless I hear of anyone who would like them.

Hello Jo,

Just for you.

Here is a link to a camera recording the nest of a pair of Ospreys in Cumbria. They have built their nest, paired, but yet to lay the eggs. Suprisingly, they both seem to leave the nest unattended at times during the day and most nights.

I have a great many Model Engineers the ones prior to WW II don't contain much at all, after the War the style changes, Westbury takes over and there is about 50 years worth that there is normally something worth reading in each, after the Millennium I continued supplementing their publishing cost until after about 10 years I realised it took me longer to put the magazine in the binders than it did to flick through/read them  :disappointed:

Really what is needed is for someone to digitise all of them, then we can all get some model display space back  :)

I know the publishers now do digital versions but they seemed to up date their magazine reader and no longer can I print them to pdf to keep the articles I want to read on to paper to enjoy with a  :DrinkPint:

Hi Jo

Yes it is bizarre that if you can access the digital versions its not easy to print off a hard copy of a particular article.

I am going to cut out what interests me and keep and possibly scan as well those that do interest me.

Seems a good excuse to crack on with this with a glass of something  :wine1:

Great idea for an interesting thread Jo.

Here's another link to an Osprey nest camera: https://www.ci.independence.or.us/it/page/osprey-nest-live-stream It's along the Willamette River in Independence, Oregon about a mile from where I live.

We only use our television to watch the news, so I'm able to display it the rest of the time. Really interesting.

Del, hold onto those old MEs just in case there is another run on toilet paper at the supermarkets.

If you have a current subscription then read the mag via Pocketmags which is not only a better viewer than the site's one it allows printing of upto 2 pages at a time.

Well my Bonsai have never been so pruned and pampered and the flower beds are looking very weed free as the nice weather has drawn me outdoors and even the koi are active again now the temps are starting to rise.

I'm also making fast progress on the latest 24mm bore own design engine and have even been doing a bit on the Hoglet I started years ago, at this rate there could be another two running engines by the end of the month.

I had the same problem with the model engineer magazine, too many taking up too much space.
After mulling over the problem I decided to donated them to the local model engineering society. TheY used a number of volumes to fill in the missing years in their reference library and now have many volumes to loan to members, including me.
I did keep a small number of volumes mostly of the 1970’s & a few classic issues by GHT, Tubal Cain.

Gardening takes a lot of my time as well :) I have just finished sieving 45 30cm pots of soil from my compost heap ready for my tomatoes, peppers and cues. While the greenhouse mainly has the flowers growing in it, my conservatory has all the fruit plants and yes I managed to finish decorating it just before the plant invasion  ;)

The other member of my household has been "tidying up" his casting cupboard and has been rehousing his castings in unlabelled smoked plastic boxes. This means not only do I no longer have an idea where specific casting sets are but there is no longer an opportunity of getting a quick glimpse of the sets if the door is left open to remind me what might be in there  :wallbang: :pinkelephant:

Well, I thought  I'd chime in just because.

I haven't been doing much machining of late, because as usual I've drifted on to some other projects. This is a bad habit of mine. Although to be fair, if a project really needs completing because of safety or because it will leave the house open to damage or something, I stay the course. But for my fun projects I do flit about a bit.

Anyway, at the start of the lockdowns, my new sidecar shipped out of the UK. There was much stress while I waited for it to arrive, wondering if it would make it to my door, or instead end up in some warehouse for a year, but it made it in perfect shape.

So, I got that attached to my bike, and here it is.

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorbikes/Triumph/Bonneville/Watsonian-Sidecar/i-mrgcLrm/0/a0d3d299/X2/DSC_0452%20%28Large%29-X2.jpg) (https://propforward.smugmug.com/Motorbikes/Triumph/Bonneville/Watsonian-Sidecar/i-mrgcLrm/A)

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorbikes/Triumph/Bonneville/Watsonian-Sidecar/i-d28FcWs/0/ad8d12c3/X2/DSC_0443%20%28Large%29-X2.jpg) (https://propforward.smugmug.com/Motorbikes/Triumph/Bonneville/Watsonian-Sidecar/i-d28FcWs/A)

Unfortunately, the handling is awful. Turns out I have the set up way off, so I need to work on that.

So while I gave that some thought, I decided once and for all that I was fed up with not being able to access the intertubez from my shed. My shed is only about 70 yards from my house, but being metal sided the wi fi signal from the house just doesn't get through, and nor does cell phone signals, so I can't use my phone as a hot spot.

After doing some searching I ordered a microwave transmitter point to point set up. There was a lot of drilling of holes in walls, and learning how to terminate ethernet cables (eazy as it turns out, just need a $30 crimping tool and it's a breeze), some routing of cables inside the house (was dreading that bit, but now it's done and tidy all is well), and hey presto, I now have a very solid and secure link and I don't need to trudge back to the house to look something up or grab a drawing or manual from my network or cloud drives.

Here they are:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Stuff/Shed/i-bKCcSDf/0/929abe39/X2/receiver-X2.jpg) (https://propforward.smugmug.com/Stuff/Shed/i-bKCcSDf/A)

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Stuff/Shed/i-X8VTgnc/0/f2b8c7a7/X2/transmitter-X2.jpg) (https://propforward.smugmug.com/Stuff/Shed/i-X8VTgnc/A)

They don't look like much, but they transmit at 5GHz, and have a lot of features that allow setting of the transmission power so as to not send the signal too far, as well as security and all that. Most importantly, all very easy to set up from the computer stand point, because although I use computers a lot, setting up networks is tedious to me.

And while I've been engaged in all those shenanigans, I have figured out a machining set up to help me make progress on my steam engine base casting, which has had me stumped for a while. So once I get the side car set up, I can move back to steam engines.

Although nice weather is here, and motorcycle rides are a nice way to get out and still social distance.

So there's all that, and then there's rebuilding lawnmower carburetors and servicing the mower decks,

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Stuff/Shed/i-zzNH6Mb/0/292834b4/XL/IMG_5465%20%28Large%29-XL.jpg) (https://propforward.smugmug.com/Stuff/Shed/i-zzNH6Mb/A)

because as well as nice motorbike rides when everything greens up, some of the greenery has to be maintained.

So far the lock down has flown by for me, helped significantly by the fact that web conferencing using zoom and skype and such like, really help us stay in touch with friends and family.

Stuart - what a wonderful looking ride (the motorcycle, not the mower! )

We got our first really warm weather here this weekend, got out for walks and time on the porch reading. Also spent part of this morning replacing the last of the wiring pigtails to the coil packs on my '06 MX-5 Miata. It was one of the first couple months production of the (then) new design (the NC model), and they changed the way the spark plugs were wired up, with a coil pack per plug. Unfortunately, the signal wire to tell the pack to fire the plug was made with really thin stranded wire, and over time the wire would break inside the insulation just before the plug.  :(   That would cause an intermittant misfire condition, depending on the vibration and temperature, very hard to diagnose being intermittant.   :censored:   Turns out the factory figured it out in a few months and changed the wire gauge, but they never did a recall or service bulletin on it.   >:(   Thanks to the Miata owners forum, found out about the real cause and the easy/cheap solution.  :cartwheel: Replacing the wiring harness is what the dealers would do, which is a huge expensive job since it is tied in everywhere around the engine bay. But, the forum showed what/where to buy the identical pigtail connectors/wires for just that end of the harness, and where to get the right high temp cloth electrical tape, same as the factory uses. So, some time in the garage to trim off the old tape wrap, splice in the new pigtails, and re-wrap them, and its good as new! Zoom Zoom! Off for a nice drive with the top down in the sun today!   8)
Too bad it is going back down below freezing tomorrow night....   :(

Thanks guys, I'm very happy with the rig. As for the set up, the toe in is far too much, but I've got some nice straight edges to help me get that set up, just have to go through the motions.

Thanks to the Miata owners forum, found out about the real cause and the easy/cheap solution.  :cartwheel:

Aren't forums great? Just like this one. There is a ton of great info out there to build on. I am on one for sidecar owners (naturally) where I get a lot of helpful info. On one of the Triumph forums I have been able to give back and actually post "how to" threads on tuning, maintenance and such, including a step by step on hand changing of tires (tyres).

Good for you - glad you have your Miata up and running for the nice weather! Often times when I am riding around the forests of Wisconsin I encounter a Miata owners group out for a drive. they look like they are having a ton of fun.

One of the guys I shoot with is into the big Jeeps rather than Miatas (goid choice, he won't fit in the Miata). His tires are taller than my car, and he jokes about me driving a speed bump!

Your sidecar is what they call a Zeppelin style, right? What is th bike itself?

It's a Triumph Bonneville - one of the newer Hinckley made ones, a 2007, so still normally aspirated (carburettors). I love it, and I think this side car suits it really well. Made by Watsonian Squire of the UK.

The wife and I are hoping to go on a few weekend camping trips with it at some point - probably have to wait for that, but in the meantime once set up and I have some more experience, we can at least do some local and day rides. Fair weather only!

Nice sidecar rig Stuart.  New Triumphs are nice motorcycles. I've had 2 different Triumph Tigers. Always liked the Bonnevilles. Unfortunately, since my motor scooter accident last August, my motorcycle riding days are over.  I decided, at age 73, it was time to grow up and start driving something practical, so I bought a new red Mazda Miata a couple of months ago.  :LittleDevil: Lots of fun.

I haven't done much machining myself lately either. But it's there waiting for me when the urge strikes. :)

Many years ago I used to have an A65 BSA with a side car but nothing as smart as you have  8) I seem to recall the two needed a little lean out to get the handling about right but it was a case of try and fiddle they all were a little different. If you broke down or needed to get petrol that may bring you and others into contact , if you had an accident then that may use NHS resources. Not an issue where you are but just going out for  a drive in town will slow traffic and leave those on public transport in more risk as they will be confined in a small space with others for longer.

Why did you not drive it through the winter? nice bright day is always good for a drive even if it's cold outside and you have the option to leave the top up.

The same argument goes for people who have to drive to work and most accidents occur during rush hour  :ShakeHead:

Exactly right - that's a great article. I haven't seen that one before in my interwebs searchings. That is the method I am now using, although I'm using aluminium extrusions which are very straight instead of lumber. Same technique though.

In Minnesota anyway, our Governor specifically listed driving for pleasure as an acceptable reason for leaving the house during the "stay at home" orders. However, it is important to weigh the risk and impact. Even so, getting out for a drive has been good.

No problem going out here as long as it is not close to others, so going for a drive, a walk around the block, is fine. At grocery stores, gas stations, anywhere with other people, etc a mask is required as well as staying apart - fine by me, I dont want to get it! We never had lockdown measures as strict as some countries where you had to stay in your house completely. Some areas here are relaxing things too fast in my opinion, time and the hospitals will tell.  :(   The area I am in has not been hit anywhere near as bad as the big cities, they are having a very bad time.

We are well behind other areas in terms of infection rate. I'm hoping that means we will be better prepared when the inevitable ramp up in infection rate starts.

Bit depressing thinking about it really.

If anyone here hasn't tried things like zoom, skype or whatever, I do recommend giving it a go to connect with friends and family. It helps a lot, and you can have a whole group on the chat. Good for morale for sure.

Hi Chris , Miata question - if you get the firing order wrong when fixing the plug wire issue, does the car go "Mooz Mooz" rather than "Zoom Zoom"?    (points to ponder)

I worked on a LOT of the rotary engined RX-7's in the 1980's for friends who raced and rallyed them. They were a really fun car and the engines were a breeze to work on once out of the car.

I'm a bit big framed for a Miata  (would need one for the other foot) (and no, I don't have a pet blue ox) but I liked them a lot too. Mazda sure had the knack for sports cars in those days.

At around 5'7", I'm about as tall as will fit comfortably in a Miata - the seat top is all the way back and touching the roll bar. There was one time I had it at the local garage for its annual state inspection, and the mechanic pulling it into the bay was at least 6'4" - he was sitting in the seat and looking over the top of the windshield, knees up either side of the steering wheel....

Speaking of Miatas, some former neighbors of mine owned one.  The dad was my size, and his son was a rugby player and tall.  The two of them fit somehow, but it was a funny sight.

As for pastimes, my Jeeping has been cut short by the pandemic.  Dog walking takes an hour each morning and evening.  My office window looks out over our backyard bird feeders where there is plenty of action all day.

I'm about to restart my credit card points accumulation again as American Express had doubled the rewards on their travel cards to entice people not to cancel them.  This "hobby" enabled me to spend two weeks in Japan in March at 4-5* hotels without paying, so assuming we can travel again in the near term this is worthwhile.

I think the Miata only goes "Mooz Mooz" if you're driving in a pastoral setting. I must admit having just acquired a 1965 Austin Healey Sprite. Some assembly required, a lot actually. It has been sitting bottom up at work for about 15 years. Boss bought a complete car and is parting with this one. Now I need the social distancing to end so that the 4 or 5 people it will take to flip it over can be close enough to do said flipping over. And as hard as it is to believe I've had my 1976 R-90s since 1986 and cant find a photo of it. Guess while its warm I should move it around in the garage so it can be extracted and a photo added to the, what to do under lock down category.

I just got a small side project. Having made a few small things for the gas powered Lombard trucks up at the logging museum in Maine, been asked to turn replacement choke knobs for them. The original ones were Bakelite, so they found a new composite that looks similar but is machineable. They are sending me a length with measured drawings from the original one. Should be a fun diversion. Hopefully things are such that I can get up there this fall to drive them again.

Hi Chris, I think it was Ford Canada that offered the first cow-based car called "Vache", built in Quebec. It had two horns but no lights.  :facepalm2:

Later a Japanese motorcycle firm offered the Cowasocky, but changed the name to Kawasaki later when people in Newfoundland became confused and started putting work socks on their cattle to get them to walk faster.

I can't cope with all this :D so back to the Bonny and chair......... A long time ago I used to ride trials motorbikes, fed up with cadging lifts home when things broke I aquired  my dad's old 500 Ariel. It had  an old sidecar chassis fixed on which soon became transport  for my trials solo. (carried on the chassis backward with it's handlebars behind me when I rode the Ariel. This oufit was FANTASTIC to use..You could  throw it into fast right hand bends on full throttle and the front wheel would chatter and slide due to the flex in telescopic front forks   When you get yours set up try it with an empty sidecar. It will be LH bends in your case (chair on the right) I  promise you won't stop grinning :cartwheel: This is why serious sidecar folk fit leading link front forks.....and spoil the fun.   I enjoyed it so much I sold the trials solo and did a couple of seasons with a trials sidecar.  Of course it had to stop when I got married :slap:     Have fun Stuart             Regards     Terry

ps. Thought it was "how now BROWN cow"

Chris,
That photo is at least 20 years old, we haven't used the red on white plates like that in Wisconsin since 2000. And the cows are probably staring at the brown cow.

Makes sense. That is, I think, an NB model miata, which ended production in 2005. So Mooz Mooz cars go back at least that far!

Hi Terry, this is my  R60 BMW outfit ..with Earls forks. Yup quite scary around left hand bends. but so much fun...its still going strong  and now has a R69 Engine !!!  When I got it the number plate had expired so I asked a friend to verify that as it was a German bike  but with the sidecar fixing attachments on the left hand side , it was actually a left hand drive motorbike ??? As this made it special I was allowed to keep the old numberplate   457 MM... also a girl friend knitted the jumper  !!

Willy

Thanks Terry, and Thanks Willy.

Nice outfit there! That's a Watsonian as well - similar to mine. Really suits your BMW.

I was out doing some measurements tonight, and I now have straight straight edges to measure toe in. I have started setting up again - pretty confident that come the weekend I'll have it set up again, properly this time, and with a bit of luck get it out for another test drive.

Hi, also when I used to ride with the VMCC on the round Norfolk run ..when we stopped for lunch and went to ride off again I was left with a Norton...Mine was difficult to start as the Magneto suffered from "shellactises" ??  so when I got mine started the Norton chap was still kicking his bike over... so I said to him .."is that why they call it a Norton...as because you can't start it its all ways got nought -on. the clock"  ?  he was not best pleased !!!!! and when he finally got it going I said "funny how it always start on the last kick "!!!  needless to say he never spoke to me again ?!!!  :Jester: :Jester: And when the club suggested a different route  I said "  lets go round the route backwards so we can pick up all the bits that fell off last last year "   :naughty: :naughty:

At the age of 73, the lockdown has finally given me the incentive to make a serious effort to teach myself the guitar. I have a very nice Japanese Takeharu FT-150 steel string folk guitar that I bought new in the 70's, together with a cheaper nylon string one that is a bit kinder on the fingers!
I have had several abortive attempts to learn previously, but there have always been too many distractions in the way, but now, with being confined to home for so many weeks, it seems the ideal time to try again, and this time I finally seem to be making a bit more progress. I think it will be quite some time though before I am ready to give my first public performance!!

For any of you guitar geeks out there, the Takeharu range of guitars was only made for a limited number of years in the 1970's by the Suzuki Violin Company and they are now highly regarded. When I bought mine, I took a work colleague with me who was a superb guitarist and he demonstrated it for me. Unfortunately, it has never sounded that good since!

Hi Zee,
I am sure that the forum rules don't permit material that would cause offense or alarm!,!

Apparently, you've missed some of the puns.  ;D

Besides, you can edit the vocals when a boo-boo is made.

Well, here's another one for you - you could say that I'm in the moo'ed for guitar playing. As for singing, now you really don't want to hear that!!

Yeah, there's a reason Jeff Beck never sang with his guitar work.

Well, I'm another one that would crack windows with his singing, so instead I finally started a few weeks ago on putting together a model thats been sitting on the shelf in the basement for years. Needing a break from the machining, it called out to me and demanded to be built. It is a all-metal (mostly stainless steel, some white metal castings) model of a P51 Mustang. The steel parts are all stamped out of sheet, with some amazing detail, and the castings are very good. The stamped out parts had slots where they cross over other parts, and are held with superglue. All good, but the slots were almost twice the width of the thickness of the metal, so there was a lot of wobble to all the assemblies till glued. Thats the only thing I would ding them on, the dimensions on things were spot on otherwise. Maker of this model kit is IMCTH, they only put out a few different kits, one other is a Japanese Zero model. Anyway, here is the completed model:
With all the cast parts (engine, landing gear, wing tips, cockpit parts) it is quite heavy. Since it is held mainly with superglue, going to need to find a safe place inside a glass-fronted cabinet somewhere so it does not get bumped.
Think I am going to do some wood-carving next, been too long since the last carving project.

Officially I don't have any casting sets anymore   :hellno:

Those of you who were members of the forum back then might remember that a few years ago my new year resolution was to stop buying castings sets about the same time my life changed when Surus came back from hospital with me. He took the view that like with an alcoholic the first thing to do with an addict was to take away the source of the addiction so he confiscated all my casting sets and started collecting himself   :pinkelephant:   Slowly I have been trying to interest him in finished engines so we have a partial agreement: if I give him a finished engine I am allowed (sometimes) another set of castings.

I have now taken to collecting Cross stitch kits which he has shown no interest in. I have finished a couple more during lock down  :) I think Surus has about as many casting sets as I have cross stitch kits waiting to be made  :mischief:

Its nice to be in a position to be able to choose what to make next without having to wait for it to arrive

Hi Jo,

That is really beautiful work on the cross stitch.

I once asked my Dermatologist if she practiced by doing cross stitch, or was she practicing on me for her cross stitch work.

For some reason she didn’t seem to appreciate my sense of humour.  Which ever way, I provided the background for several examples of work, but she must have been quite good because a few years later, I could not find any of them.  Must be a scar somewhere surely.

A few of us in the Rochester sub squadron finally got a chance to run RC subs again, the weather warmed up enough for one day, and restrictions on getting out allowed it (with proper distance between skippers of course! ), so we headed out to the local pond to float some boats.

My Hydra sub (based on the one in the Captain America First Avenger movie), has been waiting since January to test out the latest changes to the throttles (now separate sticks on the transmitter, no mixer). It was all set to go, even wearing its mask:

It got some time running, all worked out well so the changes will stay, now has a good turning circle at any speed, and can pivot in place if need be.

Greg showed up with his Hydra hull (I made him a bare hull when I made mine, he added some more details to the deck than I did).

First time out for his boat, so some more ballast work is needed:

The two boats did not get a chance to run together, hopefully next time. Donnie and Larry were also there running targets (surface boats) for us, a very nice day to get out!

Very fun Chris - I think the radio controlled stuff is fascinating. I have felt the draw of R/C model aircraft several times, and those subs look like great fun. However, I do not need yet another hobby, so I'm sticking with my current ones, in which I'm gradually turning a lot of my motorcycling hobby into my machining hobby.

On that, I did finish up installing my sidecar again and went out for a short ride yesterday to test it, which was great fun and yielded very nice results. Today though, it's raining, so I will be in the shed doing something. Not sure what yet. Doesn't much matter though, as long as I'm in my shed.

Continuing the break from machining projects, a couple weeks ago I started on a wood carving project (been too long since the last carving work). For those of you who are which-alloy-is-that-impaired, 'wood' is a free-range material mined from things called 'forests'.      This particular stuff is Tupelo, which is a wood grown in the southern US, also known as Gumwood. The lower sections of trees that grow in wetlands are perfect for carving, long prized by bird carvers since it takes woodburning details amazingly well, though it is very difficult to shape with a chisel. It does take shaping with rotary tools very nicely, so this work has all been down with a Foredom flex shaft and Proxxon rotary tool units, with a variety of bur shapes.

I started with a small plastic Wildebeest head from a zoo gift shop - nice details and colors to model after. Took several pictures, profile, end on, top/bottom angles, all from a distance with a long lens to reduce lens effects, all from same distance so I could scale them to the same size on the computer and print them out for patterns. Those patterns were used to band-saw out the starting block:
Then started in shaping the rough contours:
and working in the finer shapes of the mouth/nose and eyes - those shapes make or break a face. And a wildebeest has a very odd looking face!

While refining those shapes, also started shaping down the folds of skin and hair on the neck
(https://i.postimg.cc/t4Ywjrsg/IMG-7059a.jpg)
The ears and horns were made seperately, partly for ease of carving but mainly since the offcut block of Tupelo I started from was not wide enough to include them (Tupelo is not easy to find all the time, and I am saving my larger chunks for future bird projects). So, offcuts were used to make the ears, which were glued on to the sides of the head:

Same with the horns:
The horns got a liberal coating of superglue before attaching - a trick I learned from one of the birdcarving books. The superglue soaks in and hardens the wood, allowing you to sand it and get a very hard/smooth surface, which when painted looks more like horns (or beaks or talons in the case of birds). That is why they look darker yellow. Due to the odd angles, the horns were held with tape while the wood glue set up:
Amazing how much adding the ears and horns changes the appearance:
Next up, refine the areas where the ears/horns attach, and continue with fine detailing/sanding. Then, will get out the woodburning tool and cut in the hair.

As I sit in my office I can watch the birdlife at our feeders in the backyard.  The thrashers are around all the time, especially liking the suet/nut mix in a little gridwork cage.  At least one pair nested nearby as I've seen a couple of chicks pecking on the ground.  A bluebird nested in a box near the garage, and also like to go for the suet and seeds.  A pair of cowbirds is around most of the day as well.  Other random appearances are towhees, cardinals, jays, blackbirds, wrens, and once a woodpecker.

We get a lot of the same type birds here, most of the woodpeckers are the medium sized ones, but just the other day had a very large Piliated Woodpecker poking at some half-rotted tree stumps in my backyard. He must have seen me in the window as I came back with the camera and flew away though...
Title: Re: Things to do under Lockdown.
Post by: crueby on May 18, 2020, 06:16:37 PM
Got the bases of the ears/horns shaped down, and have started in on the woodburning. This is done with a small scalpel-shaped tip on the woodburning pen, attached to an adjustable power supply to control the amount of heat. With the Tupelo, it slices into the wood very easily. The goal is to get the texture/shape of the hair, I dont care much about the color it gives since this will be painted - some parts of the face are black, some white, some gray...
Here is one ear before woodburning:
and by contrast the other ear after:
The eye was burnished with the side of the hot tip, which will give it more gloss when painted, and the edges of the eyelids traced to give them more definition. This is a very slow process - the one ear was about an hour, but the results are well worth it.

And, while cutting in more hair lines on Willy Da Beest, a stray thought wandered across the empty spaces.... When is it hair, when fur? Cats/dogs have fur, but a cat can lick its fur and cough up a hairball. On horses, we mention horse-hair, why not fur? I've been called (among many other things), furry...

Woodburning is done (finally into summer weather here, so finished up with an extension cord run out to the rocker on the porch, much more pleasant than the basement bench! ). Here it is with first coat of sealer on - this wood is quite porous, so it needs to be sealed up so the paint goes on smooth. The painting will be done with Liquitex Acrylic artists paint, thinned down to watery consistancy so it can be applied with wash coats to build up the tones. Front of the face/nose/mouth are very dark grey to black, lighter bands under the neck, then medium greys back to the neck.

Got the painting started yesterday, finished up this morning. As the year progresses towards a winter of Covid restrictions  :facepalm2: I thought it might be a good time to resurrect this thread.

Some of you will know that I am fascinated by nature and before lockdown was a member of our village walking group where each week we would go out and see the wonderous sights of the local wildlife and plants but this has not happened for 5 months now and there is still no signs of it starting up again  :'( We did however have a Webinar on Introduction to heathland spiders. Ok not as much fun as going out with a sweep net and then peering at the little beasties under a magnifier but hey-ho. But someone asked the Ranger giving the talk what camera he had been using to photograph the spiders in his talk and he said an Olympus Tough 4  which had a really useful microscope mode

If you recall a couple of years ago I dropped my old Canon IXUS on the workshop floor  and quickly brought a new IXUS to replace it so I could continue with my build threads but I have never been as impressed with it as I had been with the original . So for my "21 again" day I chose to have a new camera for taking with me on our walks and decided to take the advice of the Ranger and brought a Tough camera so it should survive when I drop it in the pond, on the ground etc. I also brought for it a fish-eye and telephoto lens and the macro diffuser to go with it  :naughty:

Taking macro pictures is giving me a totally different outlook on the wildlife in my garden and what they get up to that I was hither to unaware of  :o I have attached a couple of pictures but its all new to me: What I have learnt is that I do not have a steady enough hand to use the clever photo stacking etc modes in macro so more goodies are needed to go with it  ::)

Six months almost to the day since the last lockdown started and another seems to be on the horizons  :toilet_claw: The only different this time is it sounds like they will be trying to keep more businesses running and in the Northern hemisphere it will not be summer but winter which is going to limit our options of what we can do to survive this. Its easy to list what we won't be able to do: there won't be a need for lots of gardening, there won't be the amount of nature waking up and doing its thing around us. So I'm wondering what we might get up to  :noidea:

Any one got any suggestions for things to do to help us survive if we get a second lockdown in the coming months?

Surely the way to stop him stealing your castings is to buy two of everything.  Make him a present of one set.  He can keep his set in boxes and just look at them whilst you work on your set.  :stir:
Both happy then.

The best thing to do is confuse the poor little chap by getting more barstock and making the engines out of that. I dropped off a couple of engines to their long term home last weekend and came back with this lot that I could hardly lift, should be a couple of engines in there including a Lark & Son Vertical. Bok was free too :)

If he won't give you any more castings you could always finish off a few that you have started, I did a bit on my Hoglet at the beginning of lockdown so another restriction may see it running.

I am not short of bar stock either.  :headscratch:

What I was wondering about was things to do when you get bored of making swarf in the workshop. After 26 months of retirement I am missing my non workshop activities like our Sewing afternoons with the ladies in the village hall catching up on the gossip  :-X and our Monday morning nature walks. I tried doing the walk on my own but it was not the same  :-\

"Any one got any suggestions for things to do to help us survive if we get a second lockdown in the coming months?"

Well for me it will be just business as usual, I'm kind of an introvert anyway..

When the weather starts getting colder & it cuts into my campng, hiking, fishing, & outdoor activities, I start spending more time on my CAD system  :atcomputer: learning new features, redrawing old engine plans & creating plans for folks who scratch built engines using their own design. Occasionally a paying design project...

I also do a lot of reading, going through my "bucket list" of classic books I want to read.

& of course old tractor & machinery repairs that need attention in the "off season" courtesy of my friends..(with heated garages. )

I still get outdoors in the winter & hike, but when those days start getting shorter & colder, that's what I do...

We are within sight of the end of a second lockdown, so with the news of the possibility of a lockdown in UK, it is a relevant question for all.

It seems to me that we are all better off than the stereotype of the community in having a hobby that we enjoy, and which is capable of occupying all the time we can devote to it.  However, life does require more than a hobby and, like golf or fishing in retirement, it is not enough on its own.

I am probably also somewhat of an introvert, but I suggest that the most important thing to do in lockdown is to keep in contact with family, friends and relations.  We are so fortunate in this regard compared with the days of the Spanish flue.  Zoom and FaceTime definitely provide a worthwhile extra dimension to keeping in touch.  I made a bracket to hold the iPad on a camera tripod, (the screw is 1/4 inch Whitworth) so the screen could be set with the camera at eye level to avoid that somewhat unflattering view up the nostrils, and the giant “marvel man” chin.  Many organisations here are conducting zoom meetings to just keep people in touch.  After the success of the recent virtual show, perhaps we could try a virtual club meeting.  With care, it is possible to set a time that suits most areas of the world, so even those of us who live far away could join in and make it international.

We really only had about 24 hours notice, but I managed to go and buy a few locally available supplies in the last hours available.  I didn’t get everything I should have, but it helped.  Of course we can buy most things on line if necessary, but if your supply of soldering flux is getting low, it’s probably best picked up in person.

And we take our exercise allocation each day, now wearing masks.  I know the northern hemisphere is approaching winter, and I haven’t experienced the famous (or is it infamous?) English winter, but as the Scandinavian’s say, no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!  I got out regularly through 3 Canadian winters, and I find that +5 to -5 range is way harder to dress for than much cooler or hotter, but winter is a great time to be out in a warm coat, hail, rain or shine.

I am not getting as much shop time as I would like, and have not started watching any new tv shows, and always seem to be busy. And the only jig saw I have was done in January when we didn’t know what was ahead.  Haven’t resorted to breaking it up to do again so far.   But it would be nice to catch up with all the people I normally see, even just for a coffee or chat.  My wife is feeling it more than me, but we both feel it.

So, what to do in lockdown?  I suggest some shop time, some exercise, some chores, some socialising, even though it has to be electronically distanced.  It started out as 6 weeks, but slow results on reducing cases had it extended to 8 weeks, now only 1 week to go if things stay on track.

Given that it's unlikely we'll have Cabin Fever in January, my urgency to get the Greene engine finished is at ground zero.  I'm probably going to give up rock crawling because of a bad back.  Lately I've gotten into solving cryptic sudoku puzzles based on watching Youtube videos on the "cracking the cryptic" channel.  Two puzzle gurus in the UK each put out a video daily of them solving some really difficult puzzles.  They also have issued several apps that feature puzzles of increasing difficulty levels, and I've been "wasting" an hour or so daily with these.

My younger daughter has been looking to buy her first home, so quite a few days lately have been visiting prospects with her and her agent.  She's made two offers, but neither was accepted.

"Enjoyment is more important than achievement".

"It is the journey that matters, not the destination"

Surely Mike and Jo 'enjoyment' and the 'journey' is but a transient pleasurable phase  :D but 'arrival' and 'achievement' has to be acknowledged as a permanent state of self satisfaction  :) ?

When I look at all the projects I have finished I know it gives me a great deal more of the latter than the enjoyable time machining the parts for the Bentley which still languishes hidden in boxes under the bench :(.

The obverse to that would surely be looking at all that has been done but seeing it all part made and sitting as unfinished symphonies.

Mind you Mike when I look at your engines some journey eh

Each to his own though

I'm with Ramon you can't call it a journey if it does not have an end destination. I think someone commented the other day that I don't do a build thread until the engine is finished, I look at it this way who wants to read a book if the author never completes the last couple of chapters, at least with mine you will know there is a hopefully happy ending :stir:

Well with the new lockdown fast approaching I have also made a start on sorting out a couple of "castings", just taken an interlude for the live F1, can you tell what it is yet? At least Blind Pew won't have got to them before me, I suppose that's what happens when you buy your casting sets from the RNIB charity shop :lolb:

The big difference this time around is the weather. My workshop is just getting too cold to comfortably spend all day at the lathe. I have migrated indoors a bit and started making an astrotracking camera mount that is mostly 3D printed. I have not totally put the Upsure single aside. I have fitted the timing gears and all spins around nicely. Valve guides next.

That's not a criticism Jo (or Mike) but more an observation of your signatures and my own outlook.  If you are happy with never being satisfied then that's fine. Can't say I can understand it as a concept to what we do  but certainly feel that way at odd times myself when I think I could have done something better - however, it's not a constant state of mind. Quite agree though - 'once it's done its done' but for the most part it does have to be done (for me).

One thing I should make clear perhaps (before it becomes an urban myth) is that whilst I have taken finished (and not so finished) projects out for display, or show to friends or even for the odd run for myself I have never, ever, felt the need to fondle them - that's not something I reserve for the workshop  :lolb:

My signoff "It is the journey that matters, not the destination" is as much an observation on 'life' as anything.

We will all reach our final destination ("the wooden overcoat") one day, so reach out, embrace and enjoy every day of life's journey.

It can equally be applied to the 'big' long duration projects I prefer to take on. Each finished part is it's own milestone on that journey.

Well as far as life itself is concerned Mike I couldn't agree more, I embrace it every minute of the day :)

A finished part however maybe a milestone but it's not the end of the road, just a waymarker. As each year passes and I move closer to the end of the perch too I would much prefer to leave behind something more tangible than just 'bits'.

That said I have no idea what will happen to my stuff, finished or bits - I have no one (relatives that is) to leave it to so whilst it's being made for my own satisfaction at present it's actually just being made for someone else to enjoy - still prefer to leave it to them finished though, whoever they might be ;D

Well, I now have another thing to add to my list of things to do under lockdown. It seems that alcohol sales has gone up in this time under Covid. So I'm making a batch of home brew. It is my own formulation of an IPA based loosely on Goose Islands Imperial 49, a double IPA. I tweaked the 5 hops they used till I liked it. My friend who's measure of a good beer is that it is under 25 IBU's, his glowing affirmation is that he says this is my best batch yet. This one should be 7.3 ABV, 53 IBU's and 13.8 SRM. The hops are Calypso, Cascade, Chinook, Galaxy and Amarillo. If anyone has time on your hands under covid lockdown and wants to give it a try PM me for the recipe.
Cheers  :DrinkPint:

......... I did notice somewhere you had an unfinished Bentley, are you planning to finish this off

Hello Mark,

Honest answer to that is I really don't know. I have made quite a lot of it and it's near ready for basic assembly but needs the rings making (they've all been roughed and cut off) before the pistons can be finished. If I could find the enthusiasm to do that then then assembly could begin.

Trouble is at this point in time, due to other factors,  I have very little desire to do so and can't really see it coming to the fore anytime soon.

Apologies - but I can't be any more specific than that I'm afraid.

Mike - on my seventieth birthday I was shown something by my last boss that had a huge impact at the time and has remained so on my outlook ever since. We were talking about his retirement and I commented that you only get one go at it. 'Tell me about' he said and taking a tape measure from the shelf laid out about 90 inches of it across the saw support. 'Here he said - put your thumb on the number of inches you are old'

I did so at 70 naturally. 'Now' he says 'Put your other thumb on 83 inches'. Followed his instruction. He continues - 'The average age of the male in the UK is around 83 years. From seventy back to zero is what you've had - from 70 to 83 is what you've got left'.

Believe me when you actually physically do this and see the difference the effect is immediate and sobering :o

To put that into perspective I've already used near six of those inches :o  - I like to think though that every 64th of them has been put to good use  :)

I loved the Matt cartoon this morning: It shows Guy Fawkes sitting in front of some barrels as he is found and claiming "Gunpowder? No I am stock piling loo roll"

Edit: Tug I am a metric person my tape measure goes to 100cm (my family are long lived) if I hold the tape on my age  :embarassed: it tells me I am still middle aged and there is still the same to go   ;)

Edit: Tug I am a metric person my tape measure goes to 100cm (my family are long lived)

That's a bit of a short tape Jo, My shortest are 3m (10ft) going to 8m. Though as you are talking cm rather than m or mm as an engineer would that must be your cross stitch tape :LittleDevil:

Metric or imperial Jo - it doesn't matter what you chose  ::), Millimetres, centimetres or inches the result is the same - a rather alarming vision of reality in front of your eyes  :o. Obviously the younger you are when you do it the less impact it will have  ;).

Looking at 70 inches gone and, all things being equal, just thirteen left was a salutary experience. It's the visual comparison that gets you (well it did me!) It did have an immediate impact on my outlook from that point onwards - a positive one to make the best of everything.

Incidentally, I've shown this to quite a few friends and relations all save one who have taken it in the same light - 'number of inches left' often coming into the conversation. The one? well, a more than glass half empty kind of person,  he took it the other way and has spent the time pondering how little he has left. I certainly didn't do him a favour when I showed him this  >:(

Of course theres always the possibility of living longer than the average age, which I hope we will all do. I intend to get to ninety nine. I once had a diving doctor say to me at my yearly medical -'You are a very fit man Mr Wilson you will live till you are ninety nine' 'I will hold you to that Doctor' I replied and have every intention of doing so. That said of course I was in my late thirties (ha remember them) at the time. Fast approaching 76 I'm not quite so confident the energy levels will see me there  ;D

So on that note I'm off to the workshop to make best of another 64th of an inch. Lockdown Lockdown? bring it on, lets get the lathe fired up, I have a project to finish and another to start and yes in that order

Regards Jo and to all - 'Ol' Tug  :old:

"I am never satisfied with what I do, I know I can always do better and learning how to do better is enjoyable in itself." says Jo.

I have a certain affinity with that comment.  Coming into this hobby late on I am still learning as I go, how to machine better finishes, to closer tollerances, better methods of work holding, more organised order of work machining, creeping up on final measurements and not overshooting, etc etc.  My first engine I must have built each component at least twice if not some three times or more, as dis-satifaction or errors in machining items consigned them to the scrap bin.  I am slowly improving, and when something goes exactly as planned that gives me great satisfaction, but I still have a long way to go, so I will go on "learning how to do better" for quite some time yet.

I also did the age (74) on the tape measure trick - really sobering looking back and then forward, even if one can convince oneself that 83 does not apply to me, I'm on to at least somewhere in the 90's.  In my dreams.  Keeping well clear of the rona but, just to be sure!

In my family on my fathers side, my grandmother and her six sisters all went to early/mid 90's.  His sister went to 98 and my father should hit 100 next July.
My grandparents on my mothers side both went to mid 90's.  My mother let the side down at 63.  I'm hoping the genes are on my side and the tape is around 98-100 inches :).  70 at present.

I think I'll need all the years I can get just to manage the 9 or 10 casting sets in my stash. If I had a stash like Jo I think I'd need to be reincarnated several times to complete them all.

If it wasn't for daily leaf/acorn collections I might be able to get in the workshop. Hoping to start the Alyn Foundry Robinson Hot Air engine soon.

Since lockdown has turned up the dial on web based interaction, such as Zoom and Teams meetings, both my Dad and I now have cameras in our workshops. I have been having routine web calls with my folks for quite some time, but now outside of that my Dad and I have our own chats, workshop to workshop. These are tremendous fun, with lots of holding parts up to the camera, describing latest acquisitions, talking about benefits of tooling, how to get around and solve difficult set ups, and possibly my favourite bit "what I made a mess of lately", which is always good for some chuckles.

I heartily recommend this approach of getting on camera with someone you know, it really lifts our spirits, and lets us geek out on things we enjoy.

Here in the UK the "Lockdown 2" has finished and we are preparing for our Covid Christmas celebrations pre vaccination, with the numbers of people with the horrid infection increasing and sadly the ever increasing number who did not survive it :( Across my country we have complicated Tier system to inform us of what we are allowed to do (by Law) to prevent further infections but for 5 days over Christmas we have been told the restrictions are being dropped and so long as you do not have more than 3 households in your house you can have a multi household celebration. So what to do? There seems to be two groups of opinion on this:

1, Those who are dying for Christmas and looking forward to getting together   :whoohoo:.

2, Those who are concerned that there is a real risk of getting an unintended Christmas present of Covid  :paranoia: only a month or so before they are going to get the jab

So I was wondering what people are planning to do over their Christmas.

No multi home celebrations at our house. We’re steering clear of folks. Will have video get togethers and a quiet Christmas. I have lost co workers to the covid, so we’re not risking it. Christmas Eve I’ll get some shed time, which is a win of sorts.

1, Those who are dying for Christmas and looking forward to getting together   :whoohoo:.

As I see it, there are those dying for Christmas and those who will be dying because of Christmas.  We are not risking it. We plan to continue our isolation as before and celebrate a late Christmas as and when. If we were thirty or forty years younger it may have been a different decision

Stay apart and stay safe

I was due to go to my nephew and niece for Christmas day. They were then going to see their parents on the other side of England, collect a new, to them, car and drive back two days after Boxing day. These plans have been kicked into touch and they will be doing a rushed visit to their parents. At least they won't be travelling by train (the railway system is being hit hard by the virus in England).

I will stay at home for Christmas and, if it is not too cold, continue wrecking part of the workshop prior to a refurbishment.

I am still in tier 3 and my cousin has had his first vaccination this morning.

As my Corliss journey comes to an end I do have plans for the future - but getting Covid definitely does not figure in them! Isolation then is very much on the cards for Sue and I even though we are in a relatively safe (virus wise) part of the country

We do know of people who have succumbed - the treasurer of our Para association went down with it and was hospitalised. An ex Falklands vet in his late fifties or so he described it as a very unpleasant experience.

So no festivities in the 'tugandsue' household this year just a nod to the day and get in the ol' comfort zone I guess  ;)

Whatever you do, however, take heed of Government advice  ;)

Early present for my parents, the Doctors phoned today and they get their first jabs on Monday.

It's usually just the three of us at Christmas so not much change there though the odd dropping off or receiving presents from a few aunts etc is out this year. Same with my parents usual trip upto Scotland to see the Grandkids who have just got back from Uni after a clear Covid test.

We - my wife and I - took the decision back in October to cancel any ideas of a family Christmas as being far too risky for us, so we and our family have had plenty of time to prepare and get used to the idea.  Worst affected will be youngest duaghter who will be on her own (with her two dogs) for the very first time ever.  She's in West Sussex, middle daughter and grandchildren are in Gloucester and eldest daughter and partner are in Glasgow, so with us in Somerset we are well spread out and a family get together involves a lot of travelling into/out of who knows how many different tiers, a risky business on its own never mind the mixing together over the festive period.  So the announcements yesterday do not affect us at all and is in effect verification we made the right decision.

Eldest daughter has organised us with zoom/team meet meetings for Christmas Day, so synchronised opening of presents in the morning, catch-up and chat mid afternoon, and a family quiz later that day, so we will be together as much as we can on the day.

Being considered vulnerable elderly with underlying health conditions we have spent the majority of this year since March in iso, apart from what seems now like a brief period in the summer when we did go out and about a little.  We have had the vast majority of our shopping delivered, shopped online for nearly all our Christmas presents, sending them direct to recipents, discovered DHL would pick up parcels from our house and deliver them next day to wherever, and only now venture into Waitrose if absolutely necessary (if we're forgotten something on the order or run out) as Waitrose govern how many people enter at once, so no crowds, ditto the local farm shop.  We avoid anywhere where the general public congregate in numbers!

I have discovered I'm a natural hermit, quite happy to stay at home and do my own thing and avoid people!

Boris is getting some stick for "cancelling" Christmas, but it was not him but the ignorant and very selfish public who ignored advice and common sense, deciding that none of it applied to them, and thronged about like sardines in a can - witness beaches in summer and more recently, straight after the last lock-down ended the photos a couple of weeks ago of wall to wall public in Regents street and outside Harrods, packed together like sardines as I said, none social distancing or wearing masks - and now those areas are into Tier 4, well, who'd have guessed that happening.  Sorry, but for a lot of people this 'cancellation' seems to be self-inflected. Why do people not think, and apply common sense - it's all me-me-me.

Showed 'er indoors' the picture of Boris and "Stay Safe, Stay in the Worshop".  She laughed out loud, and then said 'cheeky buggar'!  I thought he was quite right, but the getting shed time will be tricky over the festive period I think, knowing SWMBO!

My sentiments exactly Chris. We live in Kent which now has the highest infection rates in the country. This is all down to selfish idiots not obeying the rules on households mixing, as a result which we are all now suffering. We usually travel to Devon for Christmas and New Year to stay on my brother- in-laws farm and were also due to attend our nieces wedding, but all that was scrapped some time ago as none of us wanted to take the risk, even if small gatherings were permitted at that time.
I wish all forum members a very happy and safe Christmas.

Yes, I hope everyone stays safe and well. I would encourage the use of such digital video calls as skype, zoom, microsoft Teams. Doesn't matter which. I hope that my Dad and I can have a "shed off" over the Christmas weekend. He'll show me the excellent progress he has made on his Red Wing engine, and I'll show him what I'm throwing in the scrap bin this week. It's light hearted, fun and allows you to "keep it real". Wife and I will have a couple of video chats with family and friends with snacks and beverages, so stay connected that way, while keeping each other safe.

If my boiler drawings arrive then I'll spend some time poring over those, maybe run some pressure calcs and / or 3D FEA modelling. Or just keep on with PMR #1.

I have complete volumes of ME from late 60's through to 1999. They take up so much space and I am thinking of a cull....which breaks my heart.
I've been a subscriber to the Home Shop Machinist and to the Machinist Workshop since 1999. I kept all the issues in the magazine storage boxes until maybe 7 years ago. That is when I started to digitize my magazines. I caught up with all old issues about three years ago. Now they all are in my computer, which I backup regularly, so I don't worry about losing them and they now easy and comfortable to browse. How much work it is will depend on your scanner.

I too had a completer set of binder held ME magazines from 1960 to 2005. After a lot of agonising about what to do I donated them to the local model engineering society. They now have a complete set from no.1, also LLAS and EIM.
Just takes a trip to the club now to look at a issue and i then use my ipad to photo the pages i am interested in, then print when i get home.
The only mags I now have at home are a small number of strictly IC, which i will always keep.
Keep Safe everyone.
Merry Christmas and lets hope for a heathy new year.

In Lockdown 3 I have: Done lots of Cross stitch, gardening (weather permitting), some DIY  :wallbang: and very little in the workshop. Locally we are just beginning to see things start up again: our village walks started two weeks ago, my Tai Chi Classes in person are back on and so is the village sewing group - all conducted in a very well ventilated (bring your own paperweights  ::) ) village halls  :cartwheel: .

When Lockdown 3 ends on the 21st  :noidea: I am hoping that I will be able to visit a few old friends again and be inspired to make more swarf and may even be able to acquire/ buy some more casting sets  :-X.

Missed most of this thread, it looks like a lot of it was being discussed back when I was incredibly busy at work...not that it has let up much.

But I too have done some sewing recently.  I jokingly stated to some colleagues that they needed a way to vent their frustrations with a certain customer of ours (he is of a type that demands much but pays little or not at all).  Not having Jo's needlepoint craftiness, I went another direction, and learned how to laser-print images on cotton duck (the trick is to first fuse the fabric to a sheet of freezer paper, using a household iron, then run the laminate through the feed tray of the laser printer/copier).  An image of said customer then printed on cheap cloth, I proceeded to dust off SWMBO's machine, and sew up a batch of voodoo dolls, then distributed them to needful people at a weekly staff meeting.  They were much appreciated.

Below a photo of our general manager enjoying his new stress relief toy.

I had my two jabs a while ago - it turns out that being an ancient lard-butt who is allergic to physical exercise is a survival characteristic. Who'd have thought it! I think Darwin called it "survival of the fattest"...

I have to admit I spent a lot f my lock-down time on my other hobby, continuing a build I started in 1982 (39 years - it doesn't do to rush these things!). It's working in an experimental non-man-made composite material called "sliced tree". Some indicative pics:

(framing up one wing)

(trial assembly to confirm wing-joiner alignment before finishing the sheeting of the second wing)

It's a 1/4 scale Fournier RF4 aerobatic motor glider (spoilers, retractable mainwheel etc). 110" wingspan, originally intended for a .61 two-stroke and then a .91 four-stroke but now to be flown with a 1.3kW electric setup. It's a real traditional build - balsa and spruce structure with doped fabric covering and it has been oodles of fun reactivating the model-building skills of my younger years. I hope to fly it before the end of the summer...

Hi Allen, that wing is looking great.  Perhaps lockdown will last long enough for you to get to a test flight stage.  At least the timber will now be properly seasoned so it shouldn’t move much once you setup the wings.  You don’t want to rush these things.  (And please don’t ask about my long running projects)

… It's a real traditional build - balsa and spruce structure with doped fabric covering and it has been oodles of fun reactivating the model-building skills of my younger years. I hope to fly it before the end of the summer...

Ah yes, the smell of airplane dope over tissue paper… bring back the memories.

As mentioned, SNSW would not discuss any matter [specific to Declaration 6829476] or beyond our own ILS SNSW Covid-19 Safety Plans
•   However this morning a different SNSW Operator [Farad] was far more helpful [**]
•   Your SNSW travel application is electronically logged, so any new Covid Hotspot relative to PC3741 would flag a telephone call to you for testing etc
•   ** Despite the SNSW endorsement for travel in NSW, any Victorian wishing to leave their State must apply to [VIChealth] for exit permission**
•   The algorithms used in your SNSW travel application, together with your responses has provided the endorsements listed as Future Travel Plans
•   Your travel from PC3741 to PC2500 together with the dates are endorsed [together with the T&C associated from SNSW]
•   If you resided at a PC location in Victoria of higher concern, the SNSW travel endorsement would not have been provided
•   Any subsequent variations ‘of importance’ would be communicated Nationally via SNSW
•   All existing SNSW electronic travel endorsements can be revoked at literally a moments notice [this is in the T&C mentioned above]
•   Advice from Farad, keep both VIChealth + SNSW documents when leaving home [and the word approval does not exist in the SNSW vocabulary]
•   You have the ILS SNSW Covid-19 Safety Plan
•   Greg or I will confirm later today on the availability of Camping after consultation with John Wilson

Hi All
I live in regional Victoria and as you know the entire state of Victoria was in lockdown until last Thursday night.  At that time Regional victoria was released from lockdown. From last Friday morning regional victorians could leave the house for ANY reason and Travel anywhere except metropolitan Melbourne without a essential reason.
NSW heath office has declared all of VIC an "area of high concern" , but within this 'area of high concern' are 2 other categories, "areas of high concern close contact area" and "area of high concern casual contact area".  These are the hot spot suburbs or sites of outbreaks.
When filling out the entry permit for entering  NSW it asks you if you have been to an area of high concern close contact and have you been to an area of high concern casual contact. Also asks if you have symptoms etc etc.
I have answered NO to all of the above questions as we are 4hrs from Melbourne .  Answering no then send my permit to me via email I I was informed to keep it on me the whole time in NSW.
Although I live close to the border with NSW this would be the same permit result if I lived anywhere in regional Victoria.
Hopefully we (wife &2 kids under 5) will see you next sat.

Thanks Derek, your reply was spot on what I was expecting - thank you for contacting them.
I’ve attached the questionnaire on the NSW Health website he has completed, street address removed for privacy but the name of the VIC town is there. The three address fields have the same address in each. He is still in the town, hasn’t been anywhere outside of his radius since the lockdown began and is hours from Melbourne - please let me know if there is further info they need.
Agreed, I told him the chances are slim as it’s not set up for borderline (no pun intended) situations, and in no way sets a precedent.
Just heard on the news they’re considering Thursday night end to the current stringent restrictions, which might mean this is simply academic, but have to wait and see on that one.
Cheers,
Greg

Greg…….I am near on 1st person speaking Terms with the folk @ Service NSW
So have checked just now….. however, as expected before they will answer the question….
•   they require confirmation that this bloke is a Victorian and which NSW/VIC border community he resides
•   has this person travelled back into Victoria?, to where? & for what periods and dates?
•   some border-town NSW residents apparently fall under the Victorian regulations
•   If he is a Victorian resident living in NSW, he could be considered as not requiring a Victorian Permit to travel, or a NSW permit to enter NSW
•   Neither of our ILS COVID-19 Safety Plans were written with the intent to include interstate guests, ‘where that State had travel restrictions or lockdowns’
•   John Wilson is the only person who could confirm camping availability……
You are welcome to forward a copy of the ILS Covid-19 Safety Plan rev J, on to any Folk considering attending…..
If you can confirm this person's credentials & location etc as above, I am happy go back & ask the specific question to SNSW….[they are a 24/7 support service]

Hi Derek,
I received a call from a Victorian in a NSW-VIC border town today asking if there is room to camp at Hot Pot if the NSW Government will allow border crossing for non-essential travel.
He's not been in any areas of concern for months and already exists in the "bubble" of border towns. He is going to trial getting a permit to see if the first hurdle (NSW Govt) is going to be a deal-breaker, but asked the question as to getting to Hot Pot (as their state is at a standstill, the travel he had planned has fallen through).
Not being consistently up to speed with the ins and outs of the situation, can you please check to see if there are any conditions in our COVID plan preventing a Vic visitor at present, provided he passes the Govt checks for border town people under non-essential travel (e.g. if he can come here for a holiday at present, can we allow him entry to the ILS)?
All the other MEs in Vic that would usually come are from Melbourne and don't have a chance in hell of seeing each other, let alone crossing the border.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi Derek, I not sure what it has to do with me.  I am in Melbourne and still in lockdown until tomorrow, when the travel restriction is only lifted from 10 km to 25 km.  Mainly to minimise the usual general exit from the city for the coming long weekend.

As I understand it, most of the country restrictions were for the very reason that too many people tried to escape to areas where there were fewer restrictions, so there was a real risk of them spreading infection.  I have no idea what is involved in getting exceptions approved, or what exceptions are likely to be approved.

All too political for me.
