Title: 2-6-0 Mixed Trafic Tender Locomotive
Post by: sbwhart on February 09, 2016, 07:40:08 AM
Its been some while since I started a thread, but I haven't been idle. Since getting my Simplex in Steam and doing a little tidying up work on it I've been pondering what to take on as my next long term project. I have the fancy to doing a larger tender loco, I dropped on a set of Don Young drawing for his 5" Gauge 2-6-0 Horwich Mogul otherwise known as a Crab due to its appearance. Don's drawings are beautifully detailed and have many of the features of the full sized engine, but her I hit a problem, I'm not that bothered about it being an exact scale model as long as it looks ok when its over on the far side of the track I will be happy I'm more interested in its ease of manufacture, and it being a good runner. So I will be using Dons drawings only as a guide, and will be redesigned it extensively to make it easier to make:- her are my objectives and list of constraints for the design.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/loco%20picture_zpsoahmugj5.png) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/loco%20picture_zpsoahmugj5.png.html)

Objectives:-

1:- 5" Gauge Miniature Locomotive
2:- Good Reliable Runner
3:- Extensive use
4:- Haul a minimum of 8 people
5:- Resemble a 2-6-0 Horwich Crab

Constraints:-

1:- All Features to be functional and relevant to use of a Miniature Locomotive
2:- Minimum of cast parts
3:- Make Maximum use of Don Young's design
4:- Maximum Use of laser cut parts
5:- Maximum use of commercially supplied Items (Boiler and Fittings)
6:- Simple Construction
7:- Simple and easy to maintain
8:- Transport by one person

So there we have it:-

Every project has to start some ware so I decided to start with the cylinders as I thought this would be the most difficult part to make and if I couldn't make them there was no point in taking it any further. I didn't wont to use castings I wanted to make them from a billet of cast iron, this called for a redesign of Don Young's drawing. I kept all the main critical for function features:- over all length vavle ports cylinder piston valve relationship etc, but reduce the cylinder diameter to 1 3/4" 45mm and simplified other features so that it could be made from billet.

Progress to date:-

Cutting the meehanite cast iron billet to size.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02593_zpsu9f3qrul.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02593_zpsu9f3qrul.jpg.html)

I then roughed it out on the mill and finished square using an angle plate

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02600_zpsycmjyogv.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02600_zpsycmjyogv.jpg.html)

spotted out the cylinder and valve position using the mills DRO and located in large four jaw using a wobble bar.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02605_zpsuxledrmc.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02605_zpsuxledrmc.jpg.html)

Roughed out the bores.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02603_zpsolfnokse.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02603_zpsolfnokse.jpg.html)

And then set up on the cross slide and using a between centre boring bar finished the bore.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02608_zpskdadwgf1.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02608_zpskdadwgf1.jpg.html)

First bore done only another three to go.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02611_zpsmqezqejo.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02611_zpsmqezqejo.jpg.html)

That's as far as I've got.

I'll keep you posted as things progress.

I wondered where you had got to Stew and it seems I guessed right - you've been bitten by the locomotive bug!
I'll be following this build as although I have little interest in locos myself (yet) I always learn a lot from watching your work.

That's some project!
I love locos and is a major goal for why I got into this hobby.

This is going to require a lot of

Thanks for your interest chaps.

Making the cylinders from bar stock has saved me a fair bit cash as against the cost of castings that I think are extortionately priced, but it does mean I have to whittle away a fare bit of material to get them to the shape I want, but the continuous cast Meehanite cast iron is nice to machine free of blow holes and hard inclusions.

This is going to be a long term project, I'm just going to take it one part at a time with the cylinders being the biggest hurdle as they a pressing the capacity of my machines and my experience.

So far I've dropped on a set of surplus wheels from a fellow club member and I have a nearly complete tender that I picked up from the yearly club surplus auction.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the boiler maker (Western Steam) as I'm going to deviate from Don Young,s Boiler design as I think his back head is far too complicated.

So keep watching this space.

Cheers

Hi Stew

Looking good - but a bit more info would be nice .... like - I'm guessing that the bigger bore at the bottom is the cylinder and the slightly smaller diameter is the "steam chest / valve housing" ...?

The two outer holes are most likely the "exhaust" but witch inside hole - the one by itself on one side or the oval one between the two "exhausts" ...?

Best wishes

The smaller holes are for piston valves, shaped like barbells.  The oval center hole admits steam to the center portion of the valve bore, and the steam is admitted to the cylinders by the valve opening the passages inside the valve bore.  You can see where the drill for these passages made some marks in the first photo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piston_valve_(steam_engine)

Notice that there is a single hole on the outside of the piston chamber.  This is an inspection hole that allows the valve timing to be set.  In operation it will have a screw plug.  Most US locos with piston valves I've seen have two such ports.

I'm wondering about the 4-jaw. Is the 4th jaw inside that hole? Or something else?

They sure came out looking nice.

As Kvom said the smaller hole is for the piston valve the steam goes in the central horizontal oval hole and out the two outer vertical oval holes the centre hole actually joins up to the valve port as is for a snifter valve, you can't see in the photos but there are two holes at either end of the piston bore for drain coxs this is to release trapped moisture in the cylinders to stop the hydralic lock popping off the covers.

I'm wondering about the 4-jaw. Is the 4th jaw inside that hole? Or something else?

They sure came out looking nice.

The fourth jaw is reversed you can see that better in this picture.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02624_zpscgazo9nl.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02624_zpscgazo9nl.jpg.html)

The valve ports are machined in a separate sleeve that is pressed into the valve bore, the valve itself is bobbin shaped I'm unsure at the moment whether to use o rings or piston rings on the bobbin I think I'm going to have a try at making piston rings this will enable a beter design of valve sleeve I'll post a progress report on this.

Thanks
Stew

No. Your spelling is too good. Or is that what the rum does for you?  ;D
I know I get exceptionally better at some things if I have enough 'stinking hoppies'.
Slurring, tripping, babbling, dozing...all improve immensely.

Stew

I have had great success with making the bobbin from stainless but fitted with the working bits made like a pair of polo mints these were made of PEEK ( login end sell it by the inch its expensive) this way if there is a problem then you only need to make a new polo mint

PM with your Email and i will draw it up in  fusion 360 i can produce a PDF from that if you do not have it

Kirk and Stew - Thanks for the reply  :)

I didn't think of a inspection hole the valve - but it makes quite good sense to be able to inspect function and timing through it - should have looked a bit more on the first picture (it's very small picture on my PC)

I did not spot the draincok (sp?) holes, but I expect that most of the threaded holes on the side are for mounting on the frame and some are for the steam in and out.

The reason for my question about the smaller hole, was the simple fact that I hadn't seen a full size valve on a model before  :old:

The part that goes between the cylinders is the saddle, which also supports the smokebox.  Given the holes in the cylinder, I expect that the saddle is a two piece casting/fabrication.

Stew mentions the use PEEK earlier in the thread (and I presume he meant Noggin end as a supplier).

Very nice work and it will make a handsome engine (in an ugly/beautiful sort of way  :???:)

That's correct the spools are made from PEEK plastic I was given the idea on another forum apparently its very good in that application, I know of another chap whose used it for piston rings in his engine.

I've found out that the only Horwich Crab in preservation will be steaming at the Severn Valley Railway on 6 to 8th November so I'm going to take a visit.

Impressive amount of precision work in these cylinders and valves, wow...
is it easier to do the guide bar bracket as a separated piece or included in the rear cover ?

Stew,

I don't know if these are useful to you, but here are 3 pics I took of the Crab in the National Railway Museum in York this spring.  Currently she is set up heading a rake of carriages on a platform so you can't really see the motion terribly well.

No about the same you just have to keep every thing symmetrical about the centre line. I cut them using a spin indexer off a mandrel the same as I did for my Simplex were they are part of the cover.

Wow Rod they are lovely photos (PM will be on the way) not every one likes the look of the engine the big inclined cylinders make it look crab like hence the name for this class of loco, but I think they make them look strong and manly: made to pump weights  :Jester:

Thanks for your comments chaps

Her's a few more in process shot build:-

The horn blocks were made from the off cuts of the cylinders

I'm following this build very closely as I have a 7 1/2"ga., 2 1/2" scale loco in my future next year. I've never done this sort of thing before and there is soooo  much to learn.

Thanks for your interest Terry/Dave

I,ve just completed machining the wheels: I was given a set of casting by a friend, some one had made a start of machining them the outside face had been machined up and the hole for the axle had been machined, some had the back face cleaned up, and all had the back hub face machined, but the hole was too big and the hub face was to thin meaning the rim of the wheel would rub on the frame. A set of unmachined casting will set you back about £200 so it is well worth the effort to recover them.

First job was to fit a bush with a flange to the bores fixed in place with high strength loctite and a small grub screw fitted down the joint.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02765_zpsce7c6bjz.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02765_zpsce7c6bjz.jpg.html)

That should keep it in place.

Next job was to set the wheel up in my four jaw chuck clock the dia of the bush up true and tap the back face of the wheel up against the face of the chuck, to do this I had to put some packing on the jaws in the shape of some small button magnets.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02760_zpsjwxvxhf6.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02760_zpsjwxvxhf6.jpg.html)

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02759_zpsypgvprih.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02759_zpsypgvprih.jpg.html)

With a boring bar to get every thing running true rouch the bore out and finish off to size with a reamer

Face up the new hub to give the correct stand out, face the rim to the correct thickness and turn the dia for the flange to size.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02763_zpsczz5lyof.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02763_zpsczz5lyof.jpg.html)

I have a 300mm old fasion  vernier to measure the rim, the price was right and it does the job

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02761_zpshuy6keo3.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02761_zpshuy6keo3.jpg.html)

To machine up the front face I used my home made face plate that I made a few uears ago from a disc of steel donated by bluechip, so that I could clamp down on the rim I used two way tape to stick four washers to the plate and I screwed a mandrell into the centre.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02766_zps0cof17pb.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02766_zps0cof17pb.jpg.html)

Turned the mandrell up for a nice push fit on the bore.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02767_zpszphzbe1e.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02767_zpszphzbe1e.jpg.html)

Rough out the out the wheel tred dia and flange thickness

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02768_zpsg3lainpk.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02768_zpsg3lainpk.jpg.html)

With a radius tool finish off the dia and flange thickness

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02772_zpsllthycxu.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02772_zpsllthycxu.jpg.html)

Using the same mandrell as for the face place mount it on the mill and clock the mill up on it zero the DRO and move the off set for the the crank pin and lock the table up.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02774_zpskhwhth54.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02774_zpskhwhth54.jpg.html)

Drill and ream for the crank pin:- its important that the off set is exactly the same for each wheel so once you've done one don't move any thing.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02775_zpslukgnpbk.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02775_zpslukgnpbk.jpg.html)

Thats it all done

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02776_zps6yp9ldqp.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02776_zps6yp9ldqp.jpg.html)

That saved me £ 200

Hi Stew,

I'm enjoying this build.  What sort of torch do you use when silver soldering those large assemblies?

Hi Ken good to hear from you.

I used a Sivert torch with a large 2" burner, I soldered each assembly in one hit, using tenacity flux as it stays active over sustained period.

Cheers

Hi Stew,

Up till now I've been using the white Harris Stay-Silv flux, do you like the Tenacity better? The Stay-Silv does seem to have a short working time. I have read some good things about the Tenacity. Which version are you using, looks like a couple options to it. I have a bunch of silver soldering coming up on the current build...

Thanks,
Chris

Yes I now prefer tenacity over easy flo especially with the cadmium free solders I can't remember what tenacity I'm using I bought a big tin of the stuff on a special

Hi Chaps

I've not updated this thread for a while I did get distracted with a couple of other projects and I was a bit put off from updating it because of the problems I was having with photobucket, but now that I've gone add free its making the process far easier.

I have done some work on it and I'm planning too have a intense period of activity on it.

So her's the update

The main driving axles are made fro 3/4" ground mild steel bar, the first job was rough cut them to length.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02779_zpsldkntfry.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02779_zpsldkntfry.jpg.html)

Face them all off so that they were all exactly the same length.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02782_zpsicqzhxbd.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02782_zpsicqzhxbd.jpg.html)

Using a collett centre drill.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02783_zpskngayc5s.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02783_zpskngayc5s.jpg.html)

Then between centres turn down the end for a nice close fit in the wheels

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02786_zpssobpuvw4.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02786_zpssobpuvw4.jpg.html)

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02787_zpst4b4acax.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02787_zpst4b4acax.jpg.html)

I then drill down the ends and cross drilled oiling way this way to oil the bearing all I have to do is squirt oil down the centre of the axle. sorry no pictures of this.

Next turn up and fit the driving pins for the wheels and loctite them in the wheels

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02792_zpswjy9jiuf.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02792_zpswjy9jiuf.jpg.html)

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02797_zpsuybifpzd.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02797_zpsuybifpzd.jpg.html)

Axle boxes Made from a chunk of cast iron

1st job square the chunk up to size

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02799_zpsjk6w2r2c.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02799_zpsjk6w2r2c.jpg.html)

Cut each axle box off from the chunk

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02801_zpsyp1ixeri.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02801_zpsyp1ixeri.jpg.html)

In the four jaw face off to length.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02802_zpsxrqbf8w3.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02802_zpsxrqbf8w3.jpg.html)

Then in the mill I found the centre of each box and put in a centre drill, and using a woble bar centred the box back up in the four jaw and drill out and reamed 3/4"

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02803_zpsp2o58ywj.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02803_zpsp2o58ywj.jpg.html)

Then turned up  3/4" mandrell

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02805_zpseswdmvmc.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02805_zpseswdmvmc.jpg.html)

Transferred  the chuck over onto the spin indexer and milled the groove for a nice slide fit on the frame hornblocks this way every thing will be concentric keeping the axle boxes in line.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02807_zps0ytt9tkw.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02807_zps0ytt9tkw.jpg.html)

Radius off the groove this is so the axles will roll on the track curve and humps and bumps.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02808_zpss1tzwfek.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02808_zpss1tzwfek.jpg.html)

This is the axles and axle boxes assembled with the springs.

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02813_zpsvexlh6fs.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02813_zpsvexlh6fs.jpg.html)

Then using a quartering jig assemble the wheels:- its important for the wheel coupling that each set of wheels are quartered exactly the same

(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02814_zpsmzx2wmaa.jpg) (http://s431.photobucket.com/user/sbwhart/media/Horwich%20Crab/DSC02814_zpsmzx2wmaa.jpg.html)

I post a picture of the wheels in the frame at a later dat.

I'm currently building the pony truck this is being fabricated from laser cut parts.

I'm a little late to acknowledge your reply, but thanks for your interest any way

Time for another update:-

Things gave moved on a pass. the frame is assembled and the wheels are in and the pony truck is completed and in the frame, I'm taking her to the track next week to push her round the bends to check that the pony truck works.

hi Stew, hope you're well. I was quite surprised when I found this thread! Sort of your 3rd loco build! What ever happened to Mabel? 3 1/2" gauge engines are hard work when you see everyone else zooming around with a heavy load lap after lap. Did you find it was low on power? This one certainly won't be, great start - it is going
To be something else this. Locos are great because you can't turn out this beast on relatively small equipment, something capable of pulling such a large load and having such a lot of fun. Keep up the good work Stew.

Hi Nick

Good to hear from you we are all well thank you I hope every one is well at your end are you still making full size trains.

As for Mable she's still under the bench waiting completion, I'd made a critical error when I made the boiler:- top of the fire box is far to close to the outside of the boiler so that there will insufficient water to keep the fire box covered: that and the fact that I realised that she wouldn't have the power to do what i wanted, hence I took on the Simplex.

This will be the third season I've had the Simplex in steam and she's doing real well I've had 10 adults behind here, I'm getting a great deal of pleasure driving it.

The Crab if I'm spared to finish her should be a bit of a beast, I'm making steady progress but I find Don Young's drawings/design a bit of a challenge that and I just can't help myself in to change things to suite my own way of working in trying to make everything I can from solid the  wheels, will be the only castings used.

Cheers
Stew

Hi Stew, yes all ok thanks - building full size trains is hard! Ah sorry to hear about Mabel boiler - I don't think the club would entertain mine now, new boiler inspector and a seems a bit more strict on what is / isn't allowed. Somebody I was speaking to had to join another society to get an older boiler through its test! I wish I had got a new one from that guy we found but didn't quite have the money at the time and no doubt he has doubled the price now!

The best bet for me would probably be to start on sweet pea as I have a professional boiler with fittings and a set of castings.

I am sure your mods will make it easier to make and use Stew. Some designs you see don't always seem to bear in mind the practicalities of making and running them!

I think its about time I post an update of progress so far.

I've been slowly beavering away at the build except for a few small tooling projects just as a change. I've got the slide bars and cross head made and I'm making the valve linkage at the moments I did buy a set of laser cut linkages but I didn't like the way you have to fabricate the forked ends so I'm making them out of solid so that they can be case hardened.

The motion plate is made from a laser cut part with the edge fluting milled in the same as for the radius Link Bracket that's shown her clamp roughly in place as a trial fit it won't get fitted till I have the rest of the valve links fitted so that it can be correctly placed.

And I've recently taken delivery taken delivery of the Boiler from Western Steam and I must say they've made a lovely job of it with great service.

Any way her's a few photos.

Just to give you some idea of the work involved in making the valve linkage.

This is the radius link

Square up a length of mild steel, and drill the holes and corner position and then chew out the material not wanted

And these are the finished links you can see where they go on the full size picture

My last post was in February so its about time I did another update:- progress has been slow through the busy summer months lots of other things to do but I have made progress:- as you can see the motion is more or less complete I have one or two issues I need to tidy up before I start to set the valve events and I have one more link to make but I need to determine the hole centres before I do that and then I'll be ready to try it out on air.

I've just achieved a significant milestone with this build in that I've just got it running on air

   :whoohoo:

Its runs a little lumpy because I only roughly centred the valves by eye and I had left some of the brackets lose so things should get better . I've still got to make the radius link to complete all the motion works but I'm very pleased that I've reached this important milestone.

A RUNNAH! That's a marvellous milestone, Stew!  :whoohoo:

It looks very, busy, with all the linkages moving in different directions.

Hope, you can persuade it to run forwards. Sometime soon......

Thanks for your support and encouragement chaps.

With a long term projects these important milestones help give your enthusiasm a boost. Once I have the last motion link made and after a little more tinkering, its going to be set aside whilst I get busy with a little short term project I have planned then I'm going to start on the tender, I have a part finished tender that I bought so I have a bit of a head start, once I have that finished it will be dusted off and a start made on finishing it off, but there is still a lot of work to be done on it.

Thanks again
Stew

Well I guess its about time I updated you on the progress of this project I'm sorry I've been a bit lacks in posting but I've had a few health issues:- I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer 12 months ago they told me it was curable, its was found by chance as I had no obvious symptoms, we had a friend diagnosed with it, and my wife persuaded me to attend a walk in screening session held locally just to get checked out. I was devastated by the news it really knocked me back. Needless to say our NHS has been absolutely fantastic and before long i found myself on hormone treatment, and I elected to be treated with Radio therapy that I completed at the end of February. I got over this treatment well and now have to wait 6 months for thing to settle down before testing to see how effective the treatment was so I'm keeping my fingers crosses, in the meantime I,m staying positive.

Any way to the project update, once I'd tested the running gear on air I then got stuck in on the tender and completed it last December this is it:-

The tender's looking great Stew and the engine too, well up to your usual standard.
I hope your recovery from the prostate cancer is confirmed as complete, I'm about a year behind you on the same treatment path and just started on the hormones.

Hi Stew,

Now this is the real thing!

You probably know that I am building a Japanese locomotive and tender that has been pre-fabricated.

I am in awe of this masterpiece.

All the best on the health front.

Thanks Jim:- I've sent you a PM

Thanks Kim I'm feeling
a lot more positive than I was and starting to enjoy life

Thanks John:- I'll have to look up your thread on the Japanese loco. I was lucky enough to visit the Japanese national railway museum in Tokyo a few years back its a fantastic museum for anyone interested in railways, as well as the modern stuff they had a great collection of steam trains many of them in running order:- one thing that struck me about there steam trains was that they didn't have the clean lines of UK engines:- they had donkey pumps and vacuum cylinder and such like and other gadgets that I had no idea what they were, I suppose they were there to handle running specifically on Japanese railways.

Thanks for sharing Stew.

The cab is installed.

The wires you see trailing out below the cab are for the lights and the motor.
