Hello from North Wales
« on: September 21, 2020, 12:10:06 AM »
Hi folks,

I have been lurking and reading for a while, so thought it was about time I broke silence  :)

To give myself a diversion during the Covid lock-down I bought one of the ubiquitous Chinese 7 x 14 mini lathes... Please don't judge me!

I made my first 'steam' engine in about 40 years with what I had lying around (based on Philip Duclos' Huff'n'Puff) but I am more interested in IC engines and slightly oddball engines such as Stiring engines and vacuum engines.

Through lock-down I designed and built a small horizontal hit and miss engine which will be the subject of a few questions in due course.

In the meantime, here's the little 'steam' engine:

Hi Andy, welcome.

No need to fear being judged - that’s a smashing engine. Lovely work.

What are you building next? :D

Forging ahead regardless.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for introducing yourself and posting your engine.  That is indeed a very nice little runner!

Sounds like you've made good use of your lathe!

Welcome to the Forum

Excellent engine  :praise2:  I have also built a metric version of 'Huff n Puff' which runs nicely on breathpower.
Best regards

Roger

Thanks very much for the welcome folks  :)

What are you building next? :D

Just sorting out some bling for my horizontal hit and miss engine... ;)

I guess since it's already built, I should post pictures in the 'showcase' section?

Welcome to the forum Andy.

No shame in an import mini-lathe. It's a perfectly reasonable way of starting in or returning to this pursuit without breaking the bank.

Unfortunately I couldn't see your engine video - seems that there may be something going on with youtube URLs as some of my videos have disappeared from this forum too.

Gary, make sure you are not using the 's' on the end of the 'http' in the forum address, using 'https' makes youtube videos not work here.

Andy,
Just thought I'd chime in that your engine was a good runner, attractive as well. And that oiler is a thing of beauty.

Hi Andy

Very impressive performance from your tiny engine. Down here in mid-Wales I have been busy in my workshop, just completed a little Stirling engine this week. It looks as if the lockdown will go on a bit longer so I am thinking about having a go at in IC engine next.

OK thanks for the tip Chris. Strangely, though, videos that I embedded ages ago and stayed in the thread no problem have more recently disappeared. May be changes made by youtube I suppose...

I have found that Youtube videos work best if you just put the raw link in your post and DON'T embed it in the [ youtube] [ /youtube] tags.  The tags used to be the way to go, but a few years ago Youtube made some change and the tags don't work anymore.  I wonder if you're old links have the tags around them?  You might check.  You can delete them and see if it fixes them.

Just put the bare URL in the text and it works - assuming people don't use https, of course :)  I know the admins have that issue on their list of things to work on, but it may be sometime before it gets addressed.  And there's an easy workaround!
