Hello from Syracuse, New York.
« on: August 22, 2020, 03:34:28 PM »
Thanks for allowing me to join the forum.  I am a retired engineer with a background in injection mold making, CAD/CAM and computer simulation.

My interest in model engineering began as a young man growing up in England and has continued to this day.  Since I retired in January 2019 I have converted my benchtop milling machine to 3 axis CNC and have several half-finished, not started, projects on the go.  They consist of a Stuart 10V, Bob Shores Hit and Miss engine, Evolution 7-77 radial gas engine conversion and a long term desire to build a Rob Roy locomotive (although I can’t find a club locally that runs 3 ½” gauge).

I also have quite a collection of model diesel aero engines.

Best regards,

Eric

Welcome!

Half-finished projects are a necessity, aren't they? I'm sure they must be, since they form the foundation of my home shop ... :)

Hi Eric,

Congrats on the retirement. Pioneer Valley Live Steamers in Southwick, MA about 3.5hrs from Syracuse has a nice 3.5" gauge track. Several members regularly travel from great distances and stay for the weekend, plenty of camping space on site or stay at a local motel.

Another 45 minutes toward Boston is Waushakum live steamers which has a 2,264ft long 3.5" gauge high-line track that runs through the woods.

Hope to see you at one of the tracks someday with a Rob Roy  8)

Thanks for the welcome messages everyone!  I've been reading through Gas_mantle's posts on building a couple of Stuart vertical steam engines and found them very helpful.  My 10V casting set is from the 70's and has the one piece crankshaft so I'm going to work on that next in case I need to adjust the bearing diameters.

All the best,

Eric

Thanks FKreider.  Southwick, MA would be an easy run for us.  We have a 5th wheel RV so could easily camp for a couple of days.  I'll check out the club website.

All the best,

Eric

Eric- I'm from the Skaneateles area.
Very close to you.
I looked at Finger Lakes Live Steam site. They don't seem to have 3.5 gauge.

Syracuse is still a large community. Where within SYR, without giving your actual address!

Good to see someone local joining in.

Thanks, Sid

Hi Sid,
I'm just down the road from you near Marcellus.  Thanks for the message.
Eric
