small oscillator.
« on: July 28, 2020, 04:10:13 PM »
This is the fourth oscillator design of mine, with gradual improvements I hope. Will be installed in a small paddle steamer. I am using materials that are to hand.
The standard 2+ 10mm sq. brass bar, super glue together, mark & machine. Heat to separate.
The steam passages cut & holes drilled for steam pipes.
Brazed up using Rothenburger-Rolot S2.
In the citric acid over night.

Yes its me, Derek.

I hope it will be Gary, one thing I can say it will be different. The cylinders packed off one jaw to drill & ream off centre. Reason, to give more width at the crank. With out increasing width overall. Only a little but it all helps. The end caps turned off & gland stub taped 1/4 32 ME, before I machined the cylinder. Super glue to cylinder drill & tap 10BA. Remove with heat, clearance hole & countersink the cap. Made a blank to fit cylinder drilled central 2mm size of piston rod. Drill right through cap & gland nut, ensuring accuracy, (caught before, drilling when turning.)  In this photo the finger plate used for port face plates, a better piece would have saved a lot of work, also the gland not could have been smaller, what I had.

Yes, I used the off-centre drilling approach on my oscillator too.

As for super glue - works a treat as you describe, but Man! - those fumes when you heat it...

Yes l have just looked at your site Gary, interesting. Cylinders drilled 1.5mm, can always make larger, but should be good. Milled towards centre. to meet hole in face plate. Silver soldered on to plate. Notice 2 small pins outer edge & centre of the plate.

Is there no escape from your eagle eye Derek. ::) Gasket cut, oiled brown paper. Fix the end cap, cut off the excess. The plane cap other end, just glued on, J B Weld! Piston turned from navy brass, harder than Cylinder. Rod 2mm silver steel, thread 7BA. Bearing simple turning. Locked on with 8BA nut drilled & taped 7BA.
The crank shaft 5.2mm silver steel, webs brass pin 2mm silver steel. One web is soft soldered to shaft other keyed. Cut the web with a cut down hack saw blade. Slot in shaft, diamond disk Dermal tool. Key an offcut from the hack saw blade, super glue again.
Springs hooked on the pins, face plates. the only drawback only adjustment is to stretch them.
The old & New. Needs cleaning up after a test run soon on TV

More photos. The belt pulley brass tuned convex, strange by that is supposed to keep the belt on. Pulley reamed out to fit over the bearing tube.
Yes the key is cut off when glue set.  The old engine runn
