John-Tom redirect intrigue
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:32:48 AM »
Due to inspiration from a couple of posts here ( Elmer's 33 and the Midget) I have been to the John-Tom site twice in the last two days. On both occasions, having successfully loaded the page, I have suddenly been redirected to an invitation page for a 'naked lady' site. Imagine my surprise, not a plan to be found!

I've been looking at the JT site for some years, and such a thing has never before occurred, but this may be the first time I've used an iPad to do so. Has anybody else had this happen? I wonder if anyone will be moved to find out and report back?

www.john-tom.com

I'm sorry, I don't know how to make this into a direct hyperlink.

Hugh.

Hi Hugh,

I have just tried the link. It came through on the JT site then an ad for a holiday company attempted to load and my firewall blocked it. Going back to the JT site seemed to work and the add didn't cause further problems.

I'm running Kaspersky, and got nothing in the way of a redirect.

This is a fitting job,
not a production job that can be measured in.

Worked normally here but I am at work. Haven't tried it from home yet.

Interesting that you got a travel site, Jo. Maybe it rotates, or maybe it's selective?

I didn't go past the 'invitation' page, and had no further trouble once I'd backtracked to JT.

It may be of no consequence, but it seems a pity that an innocent site viewed by so many dedicated to the peaceable pursuits of steam engine modeling, scuba diving and machine gun manufacture should be so targetted.

Dave, I assume that Kaspersky is a firewall type application? Does it let you know what it has saved you from?

Hugh.

Hugh, I think it is the "so many" and not the subject matter that attracts the hackers or whatever they should be called. They are just after numbers and the JT site probably does attract large numbers of viewers.

I'd say you may be right there Bill, JT would have an international following, but he obviously runs on a shoestring, so I doubt he could afford (or would want) to pay for anti-hacking protection. I'm sure that sort of stuff exists.
