A what is it engine question
« on: June 19, 2020, 07:55:46 AM »
Hi All,

Following on from my introduction post here is my question about what engine/kit is this. I got this in amongst a lot of other materials when buying my Myford 254S. If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. I would like to add it to my list of projects and put into service in an actual model plane.
(hope the attached jpg works)

Thanks Alan

Looks like a Channel Island Special that someone has tried making a narrower finned Iron Cylinder for

Ron had a page on these here: http://modelenginenews.org/cardfile/cis.html Eric still has the drawings and some casting sets  :-X

Thanks Jo,

Could be an interesting project. Would still rather it was an aero engine in design but I am sure there are options.

Who is Eric please? I tried searching the member list but maybe his username does not have Eric in it?

Eric is the Eric Offen mentioned at the bottom of Ron's page, he is also a member here and calls himself muddled engineer he's not good at using the keyboard  :facepalm2: best send him your phone number if you send him a PM. Eric has lots of sets of Aero engine castings  :wine1:

Do you have the timing gears?

Hi Jo,

Thanks, yes camshaft in situ in the crank case and the driver gear can just be seen in the picture. I haven't interfered with any of it yet it's exactly as I found it all in a small box, a good soak and clean at some point. I am surprised I cannot find any paperwork as I have stuff I was given for other workshop projects. I guess it just got lost in time. How much is missing and if some bits don't belong I don't know yet, would be nice to have some drawings.

Eric says it is a partially machined kit: cylinder, piston and crankshaft are not to drawing. Does it have any numbers on it?

The CIS is an Aero engine, its performance shows its age  ::)

I thought it was aimed more at tether boats than aero use?

Eric said Aero engine.

Jo

Strange that Ron's article mentions hydroplanes, flywheels and dunking but nothing about aero use and the advert you posted says it is ideal for marine use?  Is there something specific about Alan's one that means it was meant for flying?

That means it is possibly not an original Jensen one then.

No.
