Stefan Gotteswinter dial indicator holder...
« on: June 17, 2020, 08:28:57 PM »
This is a nice little holder, and considering the new mill in the Piper stable....I'd figure on making it....with the mill!

The assembly and the first part.....it is really nice to not have to set up the rotary table......no really.

My slight redesign of this indicator holder....which minimizes the set ups and eliminates the rotary table work

Making progress!   I got the posts done including making a custom dovetail cutter and the lock nut with a 3/8-40 thread.

I need to make the knobs, washers and pins and then assemble....and I'll bling them up a bit....

Nice size for the machines sizes we use a lot of.   The shank on mine is 3/8, but it could be whatever you want.

Silly question: Why is the link curved?

Does it serve a purpose? is it decorative  or could it have been straight?  :noidea:

allows you to have the dial horizontal so you don't have to strain to see what it is reading when dial is facing the back. Ideally used with an" end dial" dti rather than the side dial shown but does help, at least that is how I use mine. The much shorted DT spigot on the commercial one helps in this respect as you can get down to smaller diameters

Could be done this way as well.    The curve just allows clearance with the indicators The curved link can be done on the lathe by the way as a ring, and then drill the holes, Loctite the hardened pins in, and then use them as filing buttons for the radiused ends.

If using it vertical then the curvealso allows you to get the stylus directly below the axis if indicating a very small dia.

Did Stefan do a video on making one? Could not see it when I looked

No actually, but there are a bunch of people making it in the youtube sphere....   It's a nice design, but I like  the mod I made as it's mostly a lathe job now other than the dovetail slot    Even the curved link can be done on the lathe as I alluded to earlier.

I thought you may have opted to put the mill through it's paces with some thread milling and fancy shaped thumb wheels :stickpoke:

  :lolb:

Well   at the moment, I'm not dishing out funds for a thread mill cutter, but I could be persuaded to profile the center of the thumb wells with something sexy with perhaps my initials inset.....

I did make the curved link on the Tormach....satisfying little job.   I've made this part on the lathe....but I liked the mill better

And getting the half rounds on the ends just so is challenging....it sticks out like a sore thumb if it's off at all.

Dave,
Hey, I think you spelled his name wrong. Google wanted to correct my spelling. Anyways, are there plans for this on the internet? It looks like an interesting and very useful project. I think I'd like to try my hand at it.

Hey Art,

Youre right!    1 O and two T's....I'll fix that

Here's a link to the plans on his patreon site.    They are free..

https://www.patreon.com/posts/dti-holder-33808199

I slightly simplified mine by making the end blocks out of round stock and chamfering the end.    But that's a matter of taste\

I got the knobs done tonight, just the washers left.....in the morning...been up since about 4:30am....though I think I'll lap the pivots just a bit.

It really is very versatile.

OK....I shamed myself to just getting it done.....with washers, and with the pivots lapped.    The tapered posts have a great feel, and will lock up with just a very gentle twist.

I'm going to leave it bright.   I like the looks.
