A V8 maybe
« on: November 11, 2012, 12:18:49 PM »
Hi guys
I'm starting this build here but I imagine it will take at least a year or so so if its too long a build just let me know
Some time ago someone out there in cyber space sent me an incomplete set of plans for a Chev inspired V8 and I thought I have a go at Casting up the Block.
My Mate down the road drew me up a block in CAD (Ausdier) and this is the start of the journey.
I don't know if I will ever finish it, as lots of dims are unreadable or missing but so far, I'm loving making the Castings. After id made up the patterns for the block Ausdier came over for the first pour, unfortunately I know very little about Casting and had a few issues.
I did not make the sand anywhere near wet enough and put the spew hole much too close to the flasks (edge of box) As a result the top box lifted and I lost half an inch or so of my pour onto the dirt.
I gave another Mate, Bez a call that night and he suggested turning the pour around so the majority of metal is in the bottom flask and using lots of weight or clamping the flasks together.
So far this build is mostly about learning to cast my own Engines.

Pete

Very interesting, I look forward to following along.  Isn't spell check great? I got a good laugh from "spew hole", that sounds like what would happen to me ;)

Good to see the build log started Pete,  I'll be following along with interest.

 Unfortunate typo "Spew"  :LittleDevil:

I think it should be spelled "Sprue"

Off to a flying start there Pete! You blokes that take on V8's have a lot more heart than I have!

Hi Tel
Its going to be a rocky road for sure this time but can not buy one so I guess I will have make my own and fuel economy should be just about affordable too  :toilet_claw:
It is a pity so much is missing from the plan set as that is not going to help one bit, the upside is I'm getting basic experience in casting and redoing a pour or two is not going to hurt. I am of course pouring ingots and bar stock at the same time (sprue castings) and any mistakes can be remelted.
These pics are from the illfated first pour and as can be seen from the mulling shots, in need of a lot more water in the sand.
Another half inch or so and it would have been usable :pinkelephant:

It's starting to look good from this side Pete.

But as you know, castings are only a small part of it, lots more to figure out yet, but I am sure that if you start to hit problems, there are enough members on here to give you the help you require.

Keep going, as I am sure this will become a very popular post.

Hi John
We gotta start somewhere Buddy and so much can be done once you can Cast up your own Engine Blocks, I did another pour this afternoon in fact, but was so intent on explaining what I was doing to my daughter that I removed the patterns before making up the Cope
I did the pour anyway just as an open top casting but ran out of metal before the timing cover was full.
The rear bulk head was OK, but unfortunately has some holes. :cussing:
At least the patterns are proved  :disappointed:
This next pics are when I drilled and taped the holes in the lower deck of the Block and then hogged out between the bearing webs to 20 mm deep. When I think of it I remelt my swarf as can be see by the cupfull beside the block in the lower pic.

Hi Ron
So far I'm enjoying it but I know things are gunna get scary down the track
but if we only built things we knew we could do how boring would that be??
Once I hogged out between the bearing webs I started work on the Sump patten and here I started to run into a Little grief as there seems to be 3 different block lengths on the plan set I have :killcomputer:

Looking good.  I think I read somewhere that remelting swarf isn't a good idea due to the oxidation on it in relation to the amount of metal?
