As to cooling fins: well it's a water cooled engine so adding air cooling fins would be a bit like fitting wheels to a rocking horse. :shrug:

Quite agree, every little helps. I am assuming the cylinder end will be adequately cooled by the water radiator. I added fins to the sump as this part will be enclosed inside the engine bay.

Some more parts were made over the weekend.

The second attempt at the combined inlet and exhaust manifold was more successful when I used the same size milling cutter as I used for the CAM toolpath.

I started by profiling the back face of the manifold using a 5mm ball face cutter to produce a neat fillet. The billet was then drilled and tapped before the inlet and exhaust passages were machined. Again a 5mm ball face cutter was used to to make a little fillet at the bottom of each of the passages. The outside profile was then milled with a 4mm end mill and the eight 1/4" diameter ports were drilled through.










The combined inlet/ exhaust manifold is very similar to Westbury's design but I made a couple of detail changes to overcome problems with his original design. Three of the manifold mounting studs would have coincided with the cylinder head studs leaving an inadequate length of thread engagement on all six studs.  I re-positioned three of the manifold studs, moving them downward to provide 0.3" of thread engagement for the cylinder head studs. I also moved the top row of screws sideways by half a pitch so that they would no longer clash with the spark plugs.





Another part finished, many more still to do

I was looking at the toolpath plot for the outside profile on the manifold cover plate for my Westbury Seal. I thought there was something very familiar about that shape, but what was it?







Then I realized how close it was to the layout of the Le Mans 24 hour track. Two, too many chicanes on the Malsane Straight, but otherwise somewhat similar. I have been to that race on 23 consecutive years but missed this year for obvious reasons

The cylinder head for the Westbury Seal is a very simple affair, like any side valve engine.

The cylinder head came as a casting from Hemingway. Only the top and bottom faces needed to be machined flat, the sides were more or less to size and needed only a light touch with a file. The only other work being the stud and water passage drillings and the spark plug threads.








The standard 1/4" x 32 spark plugs are a little on the short side and don't quite reach into the combustion chamber. I will have to try and find some longer reach spark plugs. Any suggestions for a reliable supplier?

If you end up without plugs that are long enough - you could consider doing a countersunk like seen on many full size engines. This way it will still look right so to speak.

The Rimfire ones have  along reach version that has 0.3" reach rather than 0.2". Minimag do them in the UK or S/S in the states

Minimag are on the Isle of Wight,  the other side of the Solent from me. I will get the longer Rimfires VR2L plugs from them. I also see they do spare copper washes in packets of ten, thats handy, because my workshop gnomes usually find and hide the the ones in use.

PS. I have just discovered the Minimag price for the long reach Rimfire plugs £24 each. thats £96 for a set.  :censored: :censored:       I guess I will be making the plugs as well.
