Carbide insert supplier in the UK.
« on: April 27, 2020, 04:05:41 PM »
Good afternoon.

I've just " tatered " my last insert.

My little boring bar is years old, possibly Sumitomo with the suffix.

     BBPT-508R612

Can anyone help me source some replacement inserts? My first " port of call " was eBay but with no joy.

Cheers Graham.

Yes that is a Sumitomo bar.

Is it the 6mm diameter boring bar with the triangular tips?

Hi Both, thanks for the prompt response.

My ancient iPad can't give me a good picture Jason.

Yes Jo, it's a 6mm bar with 6mm per side triangular tips.

My supply of tips has been dwindling for some time and a " blind " bore caught me off guard!

Cheers Graham.

6mm edge triangle would be something like TCMT 06T1 if it is held on with a screw.

If it looks like this one then I had Jenny at JB Tools looking for one for me for years, they don't turn up often on the second hand market she never came across any :disappointed:

I discovered that Eric had a couple of boxes in his hoardings  :stickpoke: and that is where mine came from. I am hoping those 10 tips I acquired from him will out last me  ;)

looks like Cutwell do them but with the smaller 0.2mm corner radius rather than the 0.4mm that Jo has, smaller rad is probably a better bet on a small insert anyway.

Though it should take TCMT as well which are more common

Hi Jo.

Thanks for your detailed response, I had a feeling they might be a rare commodity on the second hand market.

Thanks again Jason, is that £8+ per tip?  :o

Thanks Rod, Chronos didn't have what I needed either.

I've messaged a supplier on eBay, I'll keep y'all posted....

I've used this guy a few times, worth asking him if these will fit as £20 a box is a nicer sum to pay

Make sure you get Sumitomo tips Graham, we tried others  :ShakeHead:

You will be paying more than £10 per tip  :toilet_claw:

I have purchased Sumitomo inserts from Bass Tool in Texas, not sure I if they would ship over seas though.

Thanks again All.

A very helpful man called Del emailed me this morning, after following up some Sandvic tips I found on eBay yesterday.

Like Jo, he didn't recommend other types but did provide a link to the Sumitomo guide book.

Jo's picture shows the part number required plus another part number too, superseded number perhaps?

Who would have thought sourcing an insert could be so complicated??

Cheers Graham.

Mission accomplished....

My 1000th post is to thank all that helped, 10 genuine Sumitomo tips @ £3.00 each are now on a slow boat from China.

That little job will have to wait a little longer!

Cheers Graham.
