THINGS WERE GOING WELL WHEN..........
« on: April 25, 2020, 08:55:48 PM »
Hi

Things were going well. I was doing a bit of screw cutting on the old Myford and the bandsaw was happily doing its thing when all of a sudden the Myford carriage stopped moving and there was a funny clonk inside the gear cover. The cover was removed and one of the tumbler gears fell out!! :'(

Almost at the same time the bandsaw made a horrible noise and was switched off immediately  :headscratch:

The bandsaw was stripped down and this was the source of the noise, the main drive gear

Viewed from the good side

And then the bad side

I haven't had time to fully investigate the Myford yet

Cheers

Hi

Spares for these machines are hard to come by. I have found an online user manual at MACHINE MART that has an exploded view diagram. I have emailed them to see if they can help

I suggest you count the teeth, measure the diameter and work out what DP/Mod it is and see if you can buy one for a gear supplier. (If it is 44mm OD with 20 teeth it will be Mod 2)

For a short term fix half the gear seems to not have been worn so you could reduce the thickness and wear out the other half that it clearly hasn't been using  :headscratch: More importantly why was that gear not lining up with its partner gear?

Hi Jo.

Firstly that's a good idea Jo

Secondly I have no idea Jo

I was given this bandsaw maybe 15 years ago by a chap who was using it to chop logs. Apart from a coat of green paint I haven't had to do anything to it. I don't think the motor is the original and I fitted some castors to it to move it around the workshop. To be fair it doesn't owe me a penny. Its one of those bits of kit I wouldn't do without. If I can't fix it I will buy another

Obviously, it's the green paint that spoiled it.

All the machines in my shop have a problem or two.

Bridgeport:  excess backlash in X and no back gear.

Vertical bandsaw:  blade keeps jumping off.

Surface grinder:  needs new drive cable installed and I can't figure out best way to do it.

Small CNC lathe:  loses steps during rapids

I had electrical issues with the Monarch lathe, but have managed to resolve them with help from guys on Practical Machinist.

Hi

Thanks Mosey and Kvom

Jo, its 47mm diameter.

Some more questions. Its a worm and gear. So the gears teeth are not straight cut, they must be at an angle???

 Yes it is a helical gear, so you will need to know the angle of the teeth as well.

Measure it  ::)

The other option is to work out the ratio of the worm to gear and then it can be calculated.

Hi

Had a reply from Machine Mart and the gear is available at £27.48  :whoohoo:

Which means I won't have to try and make one.

Thanks anyway Jo

Hi this happened to my bandsaw 20 years ago !! so what I did was to buy a new gear then make a longer shaft and a new cover and put a bearing on the outside...this has been fine ever since. The problem is that with out this bearing the pressure on the band is trying to pull it out of gear ??

Kirk,
There should be a way to adjust the backlash. It may take some disassembly. I had to do that on the Bridgeport clone at work. I couldn't climb cut cause it would jump .1-.15" I found out how to do it on line. I think I have both X&Y to about .01-.02.

Hi

Thanks Art

A quick update. The old Myford has been sorted. A small nut on the back of the tumbler gear post had disappeared. It's BSF but sorting through my tin of odd nuts I found one, so a cheap and easy fix.

Been onto Machine Mart this morning and ordered a new gear £27.48. Found a new belt on Ebay for £2.98. Ordered 2 new bearings from Arceurotrade £0.98 each. The gear will be about 2 weeks so I am going to put it back together for now. I'll update again when its all here.

Cheers

Rich
