"Close Enuf" by Cletus!
« on: December 21, 2019, 10:40:45 PM »
Now Cletus and I go back a ways....well he sent me this great little tool for setting up stock in the lathe, or even the mill for that matter.

I had the perfect opportunity to use it this evening....William needed to 3mm shafts cut to length and snap ring grooves put on

He needed 2 but I know he really means 2 now and a bunch when they get torn up ...so I figured 4 at least maybe more

Overall length is 2.283" or 58 mm  ( he use metric dimensions by the way)

Now I have a 1" bed mounted dial indicator...and I can set the end of the stock...touch off on it, dial in an inch, lock the saddle...dial in another inch, lock the saddle, dial in 0.283"  lock the saddle and cut.....Very slow!!!!

Then I remembered this little tool...and I want to say it works awesome!
I chucked it up in the TS, extended and locked it, pushed the stock out to the stop...locked the collet down, touched off the stop, did the inch worm technique above to finally locate the saddle.   Lock the saddle...it doesn't need to move again

Turn the lathe on and part off
Extend the stock to the stop
Turn the lathe on and part off..

Worked a treat!

Thanks Cletus!!!!   Here's a few pics

It held about +/-0.003" and considering I was using 3C collets....which pull the stock back a bit when you close them...I'd say that's plenty "Close Enuf"!!!

thats a clever idea.  I've set solid rods up in a turrent position to set the depth of the work, but I really like that as retractable tailstock accessory.

I may use it on the Mill when I have a rough cut piece of stock that I want located, but I want to machine that surface as part of the set up... Just set it up with a V block and your in!

Dave to speed the setup even more instead of two 1! and then 0.283" just put a 1-2-3 block between what you set the gauge on and it's end or anything else that is 2" long for this job.

Yes the Nikole inserts are good and that other funny tool ain't bad either ;)

Perhaps Jason...the point of bearing is very small though and id probably cock the spacer.  It really needs a travel dial or a dro....
