Colchester Taper turner
« on: March 01, 2020, 11:06:38 AM »
Andy,

That all looks very nice work.

Is your lathe a Colchester Student?  I am missing a couple of parts for the taper turning setup on my Colchester Student and was wondering, if its not too much to ask, whether you could drop me a couple of photos with dimensions.  I am missing the component at the end of the crossslide which appears to act as a support/guide. Held to crossslide with two screws.  I am also missing the adjustable bedclamp which holds the long bar exiting the rear of the taper turning body.

Many Thanks,
Colin

Good morning Colin,

my lathe is a Colchester Chipmaster, smaller but I think there will be a family likeness. I'll take some pictures for you when I'm in my garage later on.

The one fitted to Big C is the same as fitted to the student.

Thanks Andy.

Thanks for those pictures Jo.  The parts I am missing are 25218 and 25206-2 and its associated bits.

I have a little bit of movement between 25220 and 25210 an I'm hoping if I can find/make and then fit the cover piece this may reduce.

Jo,

Thanks for moving this thread to a more suitable location.

Is there any possibility of a photograph of the underside of the piece in question and a few dimensions.  Pretty please.

Hi Colin, further to personal messages here are some pictures of the taper turning attachment on my Colchester Chipmaster. I don't know but I would expect the Colchester Student lathe to have a larger taper turning attachment for heavier work. If you give me some of the dimensions of the Student taper turning attachment we can compare with the Chipmaster version.

A sketch of 25218 with measurements.

I have visitors... so the next bit will have to wait.

Andy.

The swivelling section is 330mm x 61.5mm.  The base on which it swivels is 395mm x 74mm.

Jo,
If I am reading your dimensions correctly with a=1/2" and b=9/16" this would give the slot a depth of 1/16".  This looks at odds to your third picture which to my mind shows quite a deep slot.  Or did you mean the slot was 1/2" deep.

Sorry to appear a bit stupid. :old:

Colin, referring to the taper turning attachment diagram in the Chipmaster manual copied below, the 'extension' (part No 25155-0) on my lathe has the same dimensions as Jo's sketch.

Andy,

How deep is the recess in the bottom.  It looks a lot deeper than 1/16" in the picture.

Thanks,

Colin

Yes it is, as you can see in this picture - I've turned the brightness up. It was taken with a mobile phone in an awkward position reaching over the back of the lathe.
I'll have to leave you in suspense for the measurement 'til tomorrow night. Jo may provide the answer in the meantime.

I just measured the recess at just over 1/8th inch. I must have measured the 1/2" wrong and it should be nearer 10.8mm thick (27/64th's ish  ).
