It looks green  Santa's a bit late getting to your neck of the woods  :noidea:

So when are we going to see some Swarf coming off of it Dave?

It's not fair that you have the luxury model where you no longer get blue hot chips on your hands and arms :-)

Hi Troops ...  :D

Colin: It's in the garagey bit, no chance of getting this thing up into the shed.

Jo: First swarf provisionally set for Week 3   .. assuming I get my aged carcass working again. Just put the stand together and I'm about done for.  :old:  The green almost matches the Subaru.  :)

Gerrit: If you mean that perspexy shield thing it's coming off.  And the chuck guard ... probably. I have no problem with hot blue chips. It's my opinion that regular small fires in the navel fluff are less harmful than a major conflagration should it be allowed to build up.  ::)

Enough for today.    Time for some slurp I think.   :wine1:

Alas!  At my time of life I've more or less forgotten what they're for. Missing or not.  .....  :'(

There are some that fit the lathe in the toolkit box ...

Now there is a good choice of machine ;)

Easiest way with the chuck guard is to leave the rod it is fixed to and the switch then if you happen to want it you only need to do up two screws to get it back on. I did not get the perspex shield or leadscrew cover (might want to take that off too)

Congrats!

I can understand removing the perspex over the tool post. While helpful to reduce the splash of swarf, I suspect it's annoying (by getting in the way).
I had removed the chuck guard for similar reasons and did it as Jason suggested.

But I'm wondering why it's suggested to removed the leadscrew cover.

I did not get the perspex shield or leadscrew cover (might want to take that off too)

It can restrict the carrage movement and make it hard to get close enough to the head stock, particularly when using the faceplate

Gloating discontinued  :(   .....It doesn't run ....  :zap:

Fan starts up and the LCD says 0 rpm .    And that's the lot folks ..

Chuck guard switch seems to operate as does the cover switch as far as I can tell.

It's on the floor at the moment so I'll leave it at that for the present.

I ran into a similar thing with my lathe.
It turned out there was a guard switch on the gear housing (that big cover on the left that you have to remove to change gears or belts).
The switch was activated by a piece of metal in the housing. That piece was loose and not engaging the switch.

What bothers me though is that you say the fan starts and the LCD is lit. I don't remember now but I would've thought everything shuts down if a guard switch is active (I could be wrong).

Hi Carl

I have looked at that cover switch ( briefly ) . Seems to be about right but .......  :headscratch:

Maybe have a poke about with it tomorrow.

Not sure whether the US equivalent would be wired the same as UK /Eu.

Not bothered too much. Fixed worse before. A fair number of posts re: flaky WMxxx electrics on the Model Eng. Mag. forum.

A few slurps accompanied by a rousing chorus of 'We Shall Overcome' and perchance the Gods on Mount Olympus will smile upon me.

Or maybe not ...

Turn up the speed knob?

According to the machine label it should do 150 rpm at minimum on pot.?  Belts are on the 'high' pulley grooves so apparently 150 - 2500 rpm.

Nope/ Not this one.

E-stop locked down = No Power

Twist it, red button pops up, fan starts, tach says 0 rpm and there seems to be a quiet buzz ... maybe a transformer or possibly an AC contactor coil .... dunno.

There is a a ( revised ? ) schematic stuck to the back of the machine. Just done a piccy of it.

The diag, in the manual is b*****cks. WRONG !!!   :D

Fickstit.

Operating wotsit on belt / gear cover loose.  Just as Zee predicted .....  ;D

Whizzes round quite happily now .... except ...

The gear train is abominably noisy  :(

Which seems to be a common experience ....  :ShakeHead:

I would You could drop the gear chain out unless you are thread cutting or using the power feed.

Will do just that.

Not likely to screwcut on it anyway.

In the last 15 years or so only ever once screwcut a metric thread on the Myford. Lots of inch threads though ...

Dave three things to get quiet gears for power feed as well as screwcutting, I leave my gear train engaged all the time and get minimal noise from it, just use the front lever to put it into neutral when not needed.

1. Start from the gearbox input end of the banjo and with some strips of copy paper gap each of the gear pairs, just put a strip into the gears and turn them so the paper takes on a zig-zag then nip up the pivot. Do the same when you swing the assembled banjo back against the fixed 40T on the spindle. This sets the backlash.

2. Spacing washers. There are 2 washers that space the gear pairs away from the banjo they are slightly different thicknesses. The thick washer goes with the pair that have the smaller gear towards the banjo, the thin washer goes with the pair that have the larger washer towards the banjo. get it wrong and the edges of the gears can rub giving  a ringing sound.

3. Similar to above there is a small amount of left to right movement of the banjo where it pivots around the gearbox input, this can also be used to stop the sides of the gears touching
