Alyn Foundry small power engine rally.
« on: January 23, 2020, 06:28:21 PM »
Hello to All at MEM.

With great pleasure I'm pleased to announce the UK's first dedicated Small Power Engine rally. The 2 day event will be held at the Anson Engine Museum, Poynton Nr Stockport Manchester on the 20th and 21st of June 2020.

My thanks goes primarily to Geoff Challinor the curator for providing the necessary space and facilities for this event.  👍

The idea was first conceived many years ago by Percy Gallimore who set up a Small power engine section at the famous Astle Park steam rally. We talked many times about putting on a " full scale " event but somehow life got in the way! Thirty years on 2020 will see this happen.

We are hoping to get an assortment of vintage engines to demonstrate the diversity of ideas at the turn of the 18th Century and a one horse power maximum limit will be set, with the exclusion of  " lawnmower engines " unless they are older than 1925. Scale Aero engines will be exempt of the one horsepower clause for obvious reasons lol.

Anything goes, be it Steam, internal or external combustion, model or replica. The important aspect will be the emphasis on " SMALL POWER "

Please feel free to air any ideas at this stage, there's going to be a lot of work involved to get this event a reality. I've already booked the hotel lol.... 😃

I will be posting more important information about the event once we've got an idea of how many might be interested in displaying their pride and joys.

Cheers Graham.

I know what you mean Jo. Over an hour drive see's my left knee looking like a barrage balloon!

I think it would be worth the effort, the museum has some really rare exhibits and they actually run them. And we will have several willing helpers to get your finished engines running too. Priceless!!

Cheers Graham.

I'm positive I can't drive that far (across the Atlantic!), but it sounds fantastic. Best wishes for a great rally!

Greetings fellow modellers.

We have an entry form available. At this moment I'm pretty sure there'll be a finite number of spaces available, book early or risk rejection....  :)

Seriously though, public liability insurance will be required as we're wanting " running " exhibits only. We want this event to be lively and vibrant like the shows over the " pond " !

Remember now.... BOOK EARLY

Sorry to read that Jo.   :(

I've asked an old friend to bring his Andrews Bischop engine, I think it's rated at 1 Man power, another of the " true " pioneers!  These early engines were also made under license by Stombart of the USA.

I also believe the American version was made as a scale kit, anyone have a picture please?

But.... There's always next year !     :)

Cheers Graham.

Could you manage 160 miles.  If so welcome to park up at my house and travel up with me.

Thanks for the offer Colin, but 100 miles is absolutely tops, even if a passenger.   :toilet_claw:

Thanks Jason, my apologies for the spelling error I was working from memory.

There's a story, as always.   :)

I'll spare the details, I'm sure folks will be pleased about that!

Cheers Graham.

Good morning MEM....

I've heard that the " insurance " issue has somewhat perturbed potential exhibitors to the event.

Geoff Challinor rang me yesterday to say that he's trying to get the museums insurers to cover the event scheduled for June. One way or another we will try to make the event " exhibitor friendly "  :)

Watch this space for further announcements.

Cheers Graham.

Well....

The issue of insurance won't matter.

Sadly, due to the current situation we've decided to cancel the event. As Geoff pointed out most of the volunteers that work at the Anson are of the " vulnerable " age group and all the museums forthcoming events have been postponed. That includes the Easter weekend opening too.

I will try to keep you all appraised if the situation changes.

Cheers Graham.

Not entirely unexpected  :( There are going to be a lot of events cancelled over the next 12 weeks  but better safe than sorry.
