Stuart oscillator
« on: December 16, 2019, 09:27:51 PM »
Made a start on my Stuart oscillator the other night, thought I'd start with the cylinder which came out pretty well, just have to drill the steam ports and lap the port face

Is this the cute little single cylinder Oscillator that Stuart do Sam?

I love how the cylinder is designed to nicely be held in a three jaw chuck for boring it. Hope you remembered to take note of which end you bored from  ;)

Yes, that's the one. I did it in the four jaw, can easily tell which way I bored it as one end was faced off a little more central to the bore than the other one. Credit to Stuart the casting was already pretty square, just needed a light cleanup before machining down to size

Been doing a few tooling projects and other stuff on the lathe and fancied a small engine project and this looks like a nice little kit to get started

Hi,

I did one last year. If I remember correctly when you do the cylinder covers the PCD won't match up with the extruded "grooves" in the cylinder. I had to mill out the grooves some.

Thanks Ben, they were going to be the next task after finishing the cylinder. I think I might use my transfer punches from work down the grooves to mark the hole positions when I get to that point. Not seen many build threads on these engines

HI,

I remember at the time it really annoyed me as it was the first time I'd used the PCD function on the DRO on my mill. I think Jo had the same problem.

Ben.

Yes well remembered Ben I did. I got round it by using a needle file to open up the slots slightly  ;) .

My build of the Stuart twin starts here: http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,9007.msg200618.html#msg200618

Bit more done, got the top cover finished apart from drilling the holes but have a plan for them. I made a mandrel out of a piece of pipe that I could put the cut off piece into to face it off. I didn't do the top register to the drawing as it's just decorative so just did it by eye until I was happy with how it looks

Ran a 2.6mm drill down the grooves of the cylinder for 7ba clearance then used a dab of glue to hold the cylinder head to the cylinder. Stood it on the cylinder cover and drilled down through the grooves to spot the hole positions

Nice. Are you going to fit any gaskets under the covers?

Thanks. I will do when it comes to final assembly, just put them together so I don't lose anything
Next job I think will be the piston assembly
