That's Christmas Sorted
« on: November 10, 2019, 07:07:52 PM »
Just sent off my letter to Santa, hopefully I've been a good boy this year and will get one of these

Nick has a few more but don't hang about as the chap with big ears will be buying them up.

He uses a very nice ductile iron which is a joy to machine, even the very thin sections are soft and cut beautifully. Drawings and documentation are some of the best you will get, from his other kits that I have you get step by step machining drawings with lots of notes and a few hundred photos showing machining setup and the various parts as well as ones of the patterns and even copies of his initial design sketches.

It looks very steam punk. Is it based on a full sized engine?  :noidea:

No, just a freelance design like several of his others. Bit Art Nouveau with their organic shapes.

I you are good I may let you have a feel of this in a couple of weeks

Love that flywheel.  Is the engine stand an integral casting, or does it bolt down to the base?

And setup instructions!?  :o That doesn't seem sporting!

You could have fooled me, as it looks more like a kind of Art, than Engineering - from a bygone era ....

It's a one piece casting, though I think I will machine off the cast "nuts" and fit dummy steel ones, should be an interesting one to machine. The main casting that goes with the flywheel above falls into the same catagory

Ouch..........very clean & tidy indeed Jason

1. how far does the mandrel in the chuck engage with the bore in the casting?

2. what sort of RPM were you using to machine the end faces?......... ~~~~~[like 2 hits per second? if that makes sense]

3. just to better understand the mass, which size code is the Stephenson's metric 4 hole block is that you have wired on as the counterweight?

Casting is not yet bored, that is a very substantial chucking spigot that is part of the casting.

400rpm was as fast as I could get it without doing more balancing

That is a 15-30-60 block plus two vee blocks under the duct  tape about 32 x 32 x 38. The build pics show a clamp on weight but a lot of them are more to suit batch production as Nick also makes ready to run ones so the time invested in jigs pays off.
