Well.   To make more progress on Rushforth's new engine bearer, I need to pull the boiler and boiler/engine bearer structure out of the boat.    To do this I need a lifting means....something that can straddle the boat and trailer and lift something while I pull the boat out of the way from under it.

The simplest thing I can come up with is a 3 legged derrick or "A" frame with a block and tackle or come along .....so I sketched one up and bought some chains and eyebolts and will purchase some 4"x4" x 12 foot timber today.....if I can find some that's at least straight......

The alternative would be to disassemble the whole thing and take it out in pieces, but I need something to put the Yanmar ( 200 pounds) back in with....so a derrick it is

The boiler and bearer is probably 300 to 400 pounds....just enough to start getting serious....

I'll post some pictures when it's built....

OK   here we go....short side is 8 feet   the tunnel to the third leg is 12 feet    4x4's are 12 feet.     Held together with chains and eye-bolts.
William is 6 feet tall

Load test next.....

I've gotten templates from the frames, and some additional measurements. I have also pulled the intermediate prop shaft so that I can machine an adapter for the Yanmar. I additionally have made up a roof bow out of 3/4 EMT tube for the new cover for the winter.....Good progress!! I'll get her put away for the winter by today. I can work on the engine bearer in the shop this winter.

No issues at all.  Actually the A frame was quite stable.   What it needs is a chain fall.  I was able to get a lifting strap above the peak saddle, and close it with a shackle.  I then hung a come-along on it ...but it needs a chain fall as you have to climb up to run it, though I suppose I could have just flipped the come along.

Anyway I put the A Frame away for the winter.   it's quite capable of much more weight and fits the boat perfect.

Dave,
I know the feeling of having a job like this well done. I must admit seeing a, grantedly sturdier tripod at farm museum. The center was threaded and you hooked your team of oxen and pulled the tree stump out.

Making a fuel tank bung for the boat. Most of the features are in and last operation was to trepanne it from the mother stock.....only round I had that size....so I had to do it the hard way....came out fine.

Now to flip it, face it, and put an OD chamfer on it..  Then drill and tap the holes for the fittings

After that, I need to cut a 2" hole in the top of this for the bung.   the bung bolts on and seals with an O ring.

Bitter sweet...but a pragmatic solution.   For what we want to do...it's really the only way to go....Electrical Propulsion aside.
