Midlands Model Engineering Show 2019
« on: October 09, 2019, 06:47:21 PM »
With Jo having pulled a sickie and only one week until the show I suppose it is left to me to start the ball rolling and see who may be going.

https://www.meridienneexhibitions.co.uk/events/midlands-model-engineering-exhibition

I plan to go on the Thursday while the suppliers have good stocks of all the things that I don't really need. I don't have a Sticky Wotsit and would not share them about even if I did so you will have to make your own arrangements in that department. I will take the camera as see if I can capture some subjects to interest the members who can't make it.

Hi Stew,

I have now built three of your engine designs and it would be great to actually meet you to say thanks for the drawings.

Perhaps Jason can arrange for us all to meet in the cafeteria area at a specified time.

Shall we say 11.30 in the same place as last year marked by the green cross. Though Mike may be a bit left out if he can't get away from his stand so that could be an alternative venue marked in light blue what do you think?.

Jason,

Are you sure that's the correct location for the catering area? Last year the catering was upstairs on the Mezz Deck above square Q and R

There is also one upstairs but the green cross shows where we met last year. Jo did the "catering" bit last year.

That is a catering area and there is another upstairs, Harry Williams  will be with me from Friday morning, he's bringing his
Gnome engine mounted on a gun carriage and his latest creation a valve less pulse jet engine.
I was hoping to run some engines outside but the organizers think it's too dangerous even in a cage !!!!!!

I plan to go on Friday with some mates from Bristol SMEE. Have ordered some goodies for collection at show but also taking a little cash for those “ bargains”.
Hope to meet Harry and Mike to discuss the Anzani and seek some advice.
Don’t understand why Mike isn’t allowed to run his engines. We have not had any problems at Bristol exhibition with running i/c and gas turbine engines.

As I was not able to go to the Midlands show this year Surus offered to buy me a set of castings to make up for it

Looking forward to seeing some pics from the show  :)

Jo

P.S. Only afterwards did he mentioned he had charged the casting to my Paypal account :headscratch:

Can't remember what they used to sell them for but just over £100 sounds good value.

Good to see a few forum members at the show. I've strung all the pics together in a video.

A nice few engines there. I didn't see Mike Cole's Gypsy there  :(

I know what they used to sell for :-X but if it was a good price or not is still to be seen as I already know it is missing some bits and only when it turns up will I know if it has any undocumented features  :facepalm2: The drawings showed that Camden was based about 10 miles away from me when it originally sold so it is an elderly orphan....

I did, too much of a crowd around his stand when I was taking photos

I also neglected to ask Adrian if he had any sets of  "Bamford" castings and DRAWINGS yet :LittleDevil:

Maybe the show organisers should note that having the engine builder with their model engine discussing their build encourages a crowd  ;)

Hopefully there may be a few more photos from the show  :???:

Had a nice afternoon at the Show. Didn't take a camera, unfortunately but some good stuff to see. Mike was extremely popular with the crowd three deep all afternoon! Mike Sayers' wonderful blower-Bentley engine is in the front and there is quite a selection of engines around the hall. a 900cc 'Snow' engine is impressive and the first I have seen of this type.

On other fronts, Norman Smedley's Foden Speed Six waggon is nearing completion and there was also a gorgeous Gatling Gun. I quite fancy one of those but Mr Plod does not take kindly to home built machine guns!

Have a good day, Jonathan, there is lots to see!

Steve  :)

PS. Only bought a lathe tool!

Don't keep talking about it Steve, get on and make it. Just don't go fully through with the bore so there is no argument about it being not functional  . I seem to recall you had the drawings for one either 20 years ago or was it 30 years ago.  :noidea:

The Bentley and the Foden Speed-6 were the highlights for me too.

Apart from collecting a pre-order at CES, I did not see much of interest on the trade stands.

I did talk to Allendale about DRO's. Are there any views on these new-fangled magnetic tape encoders? They may have a resolution of 0.001mm, but what is the accuracy of
these sticky-backed plastic tapes over (say) an 18 inch length? What is their life expectancy? I know there is a stainless steel backing strip, but I remain to be convinced. (These are questions I failed to ask yesterday.)

Hi Ttroops

Sorry, original post should have been better phrased ..  :embarassed:

It's NOT my video.  I didn't go and I'm not that good with a camera.

I subscribe to his ( LMS4767 ) channel and gave the link from Youtube.

The author does quite a lot of show videos each year.

Try looking for his other videos from other shows / other years

Thanks Mike. I had a nice chat with Mike about the Bentley and his next project and another long chat with Mike about his rotary engines and de-Havilland Gypsy Major. (Gosh, this gets confusing!).

The best bit of the show was the people I met.....

Yes Jo, I did have some gatling gun drawings 20 years ago. I was slightly put off by the final comment in the build instructions, 'Should the builder choose to use live ammunition then the designers cannot be held responsibe for the consequences'! That one is a long way down the list as I have a couple of lorries and a few railway engines to finish first. Mind you, the Mercedes was never in the plan at all so anything can happen!

As no one else has shown any pics of Mike Coles rather nice Gypsy Major he sent a couple of pics to me to post for the members who couldn't get to the show to see.

(He also reminded me that my not turning up meant that there were no Sticky Whotsits for him to eat   :-[ )

Damn!

Although I knew he was going on the Thursday we hadn't made any firm arrangements. Jason then started this thread as I was heading to the airport to come to the UK. I completely missed it until today as I'm back in NZ. I now find that X marks the meeting point in the catering tent and I was in there around 11:30. It was a bit crowded at the time.

I've managed four of the past six Midlands shows so maybe another time
