I decided to try and make a governor for this engine. I made up the drawings and figured I would see if I could cut the set of miter gears first. The diametral pitch is something like 128. The width of the cutter is .008 at the bottom and .012 at the top. The full depth of the tooth is .016. The gear has 15 teeth and the O.D. is .112.
The gears came out looking reasonable although even with my extra powerful headband magnifier it's still hard to see the teeth.
The gears will get pressed onto a stainless shaft.
I also started on the mounting column for the governor. It's hard to give a size comparison for these tiny parts. Even the penny doesn't give a good idea of how small they are.
Somewhere in my box of plastic modeling supplies I found a piece of .03 vinyl tubing. I used a piece of stretched sprue as a core for the tubing and super glued it together. I gave it about 5 minutes and then proceeded to give it a tug. I was pleasantly surprised that it stayed together so that will be my drive belt. I will have to make up a new eccentric with a combined pulley for the belt.

George, the planning and plotting for these pieces seems extraordinary, the execution of all that preparation, at such a scale, is exemplary. Really well done!

Hugh.

Amazing gears!  What did you use for a cutter?  Sorry if you said and I missed it somehow.

Hi Lee,
I made one up. I layed out the shape of the tooth in my drawing program and cut it onto a piece of drill rod. The width of the tooth at the root went from .008 to .012 so I split the difference at .010. I cut the angle of the tooth from that dimension. I figured something that small wouldn't need a curve to it. I then hardened the blank and then ground the flutes into it with a small cut-off wheel in my Dremel grinder. I used a diamond hone to put a little clearance onto the side of the flutes. All this was done with my magnifier. I figured once I got the gears cut it they were a little too fat I could run them in with a little diamond lapping compound.

Well, you can't see them, but if you could you'd see  .000000000004 DP 126 tooth hypoid gears made of 89Rc titanium cultivated from the frass of adolecent trolls who grew up in the black forest of transylvania...

Now if  " I" posted that I would be laughed at....but if GEORGE posted it....we'd all be grabbing the microscopes!

Because....THAT would be exactly what George would have made!

George, I can't possibly explain how each and every time you blow me away....with your effort, you skills, your talent and your determination.

Words and superlatives are just so completely...absolutely!  inadequate!

As a member of this forum, and a fellow human being....you have my highest respect sir!
