Very handy tool. Well worth getting a decent boring bar(s) too, the cheap brazed-on carbide ones are worthless as they come, without a lot of grinding work. Best add on tools for the mill, at least for what I use the most, are a good screwless vise, rotary table (able to be mounted horizontal and vertical), and boring head.

Got the rest of the first eccentric bore out to the size of the slot on the follower, then took a partial-depth cut on both sides to form the rib in the center to match the width of the slot. The first side was already lined up from boring the main hole, but for the second side the part has to be flipped over and re-centered. I was about to get out the indicator, when I realized that I could just reset the boring head to the diameter of the first hole, and adjust the position of the mill table till turning the head by hand made it just scrape around all sides evenly. Then, knew it was centered and ready to cut - less time spent swapping tools around for the same result.


Here is what the rib in the center looks like with the two halves unbolted, and a little filing to remove the bur left by the cutter.

So, one down, starting on boring out the second one...

Noticed I forgot to post the picture of both followers bored out ready to shape the outside edges. Been getting things ready for next RC sub run at the pool this weekend.

Started shaping the outsides of the followers today. Started by milling in the slot for the arm up to the valve rod to fit into, then cut the straight section at the end around the slot:

Then moved the part out about 3" from the center to cut the curve that connects the flanges to the slot around the arm:

Got that cut made on both followers, next will mill the curve on the bottom half...

Nothing like some good Sherline "Etch-A-Sketch" machining!

This morning started in on rounding off the bottom caps for the eccentric followers. On smaller ones I would have used the trick of milling in the vise with a drill rod for a guide, but there would have been a lot more passes on these, plus I already had the rotary table set up.

Got the second bottom half shaped, and both assembled onto the model. Also added the arms that lead up to the valve rods, riveted in place into the notches made the other day.

And whipped up the clevises (clevii? cleviseses? Those things! ) to join to the valve rod ends, as well as a pair of shoulder bolts for the pivots.

I think the next step will be the valve sliders/rods. Getting close to done on the engine parts, though still need to make the throttle body/slider/lever/pipes to make it all go....
