Seal 15CC, yes another!
« on: September 20, 2019, 08:01:16 AM »
Hi all!
I have just about completed my Seal 15cc ,just waiting on the ignition system and spark plugs. In the plans there is no mention of a head gasket (amongst other things)just lapped surfaces, what do people think? I'm tending towards something from a sealer to paper gasket to Teflon?

Thanks
Mark

The cylinder head is soft Aluminium so you don't need one.

Jo,
Thanks, I was thinking at a mininium something like a varnish or gasket sealant but I will go with nothing and see how I go. The block and head have been finished with 800 wet and dry paper on a surface plate so should be reasonably flat
Cheers

ET Westbury mentions using varnish, and ISTR seeing him mention copal varnish, an artists' varnish I would not be surprised if one can't get any more. Hermetite sadly has gone. Hylomar may be a more modern equivalent, but I find it rapidly becomes too stiff to apply thinly to small areas.

If you want a sealant that will go very thin and not dry out on you use Stag's Wellseal jointing compound  ;)

Thanks Jo. Seems a lot of people say the same, so I now have a tube of Wellseal on order. Others seem to swear by Heldite, so I have a tester of that comming too, just to see what it is like.

It's alive! I received my s&s cdi fro Roy Sholl this week for my Seal 15cc and hooked it all up and it fired up and ran after advancing the distributor a bit! It's built to the plans with the horizontal distributor and the carb from the plans. Rather low on compression but, it runs and starts fairly easily . Doesn't want to idle down to a low  tick over but does seem to be getting better the more I run it. Had an hour or so of running.
Will get more tomorrow after an oil change  :whoohoo: :whoohoo: :pinkelephant: :cartwheel:
Cheers

You can easily attach them to your post Mark. If you look just under the box you put your text for posting on the forum you will see it says "Attachments and other options"  ;)

Yes Jo! I am looking forward to seeing you back on them!
I am trying to work out an electric starter for mine so I can just put the boat in the water and start it and go! Want it to not look out of place so want it as small and compact as possible.

It would be difficult to reduce the size of the starter gear.
Have a look at this one, that works great...
