Vacation in Maine
« on: July 10, 2019, 05:26:38 PM »
I am going to Portland Maine at the end of this month (July) for a week I thought I remembered seeing that one or possibly 2 members live in that area. Other than beautiful scenery, water, trees and rocks what are some of the MUST DO & SEE things are there?

Not really into the Bar and BEER scene but we do like to eat. Possibly a boat museum or lighthouse might be nice.

I am a big boy, Tell me where to go.

Thanks

Jack

Oh yes, the owls head museum is wonderful. Well worth going to, lots of cars, planes, a big Corliss engine.

Also, there is the Portland Head Lighthouse just south of the city, stunning views. Also nearby that is Two Lights state park with a couple of smaller lighthouses. Farther south in the Kennebunkport area are some great beaches, more north its mainly granite waterfronts. There are a couple of nice railway museums around the Portland area.On the way past heading north, in Wells is Billys Chowder House, awesome seafood. In Kennebunkport is The Clam Shack, has great haddock.

On July 27th the Maine Forest and Logging museum, up north of Bangor, is having an event where they will be running the Lombard log haulers, a real treat. They should have the steam one and two gas ones running, taking passengers.

Lots of parks around, many small towns along the waterfront.

Seashore Trolley Museum!

My Uncle retired there from Philadelphia. Why play with model trains when you can play with the real deal in Maine!

I am one of those fortunate enough to live in Maine. I do some volunteer work at the Boothbay Railway Village, https://railwayvillage.org/and give shop tours to bus loads of tourists. Let me know if you will be here and we can meet for a personal tour.

The WW&F Ry in Alna Maine http://wwfry.org/is spectacular. In something over 20 years a great group of volunteers have re-created 3 miles of Narrow gauge RR, with shops, car barn, turntable and just an amazing array of narrow gauge life. In process right now we are moving most of what was at the narrow gauge museum  in Portland to Alna. Its not exactly a merger of the museums, but a very tight cooperation.

The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath https://www.mainemaritimemuseum.org/ is well worth a visit. The usual museum galleries, plus the oldest Maine built wooden schooner, a small craft shop and lots more.  They also offer tours of the Bath Iron Works, a shipyard building US Navy ships. The strangest ship ever seen, a 'stealth' ship is still on site- but I think the Navy will take it a way soon.

Send me a PM and we can arrange to get together if you are coming to the Mid-coast area.

Ron - last I read the Bath museum 'tours' of the shipyard consist of driving back and forsth around the outside, due to security issues they dont go inside anymore.
