Mystery tooling?
« on: July 11, 2019, 11:22:51 AM »
These were found in the loft of a colleague's deceased FiL. Does anyone know what they are? They aren't just wire gauges, surely?

TIA,

Allen.

Is there any way to zoom in to one of the 'gauges' so we can read the inscriptions?

cheers

Mike

If you click on the attachment it zooms it to the full size of the image. The inscriptions look to be dimentions in mm - I'm assuming they
are the diamemter of the grooves.

If it helps - I've just been told his hobby was repairing watches.

I have a feeling that these are a set of Jacot tool drums for horological pivot polishing and burnishing, and of course that would fit in with the hobby mentioned. They would be used in conjunction with a Jacot tool, or a watch or clockmaker's lathe.  The pivot would be laid into the groove, usually spun with a ferrule pulley and bow, and the work would proceed on the accessible upper surface.     Dave

That is interesting and a new bit of knowledge for today. Wondering if they have any shop uses other than the horological ones for which they are intended?

It has made me wonder if there's an idea for a crankshaft or valve stem lapping/sizing fixture trying to emerge here...

I hope people don't mind me doing this - if it breaks the rules please just delete it and let me know.

So the colleague in question has given me photos of some other things retrieved from the late FiL's workshop ahead of the house clearence. If anyone is interested in any of these a donation to a particular charity plus postage/shipping is all that's asked. He has no idea on values and isn't looking for much (they would otherwise be going in a skip) but let's not be completely silly here! If you're interested then just PM me.
