Half Fast Tap extension
« on: October 31, 2012, 11:32:24 PM »
I wasn't satisfied with how my new flywheel was running so I decided to make a new hub but this time I waited until the hub was seated and the flywheel was running true in the lathe before boring the hole for the shaft.  OK so far. Now drill and tap the hub for a grub screw.  Oop!

I set the flywheel at an angle in the vise to get better access to the hub and was able to drill with a long series bit but there was no way the tap was going to reach.  Here is my quick solution.  I nailed it.

Hole drilled in nail as close as possible to the tap body diameter.  Insert tap.  Crimp the nail once against the body of the tap and twice, at 90? where the flats are at the top of the tap.  I left the nail head on so you could see what it was, but you could turn that off for better clearance.

I don't think it will be hard to remove it but I dont see a need to right now.

Wow that is great!  I have faced that situation many times, as I am sure others have.

This is a definite "to remember" solution that I have never seen before.

Thanks for the comments.  I posted this four months ago and it seems like a lot of people missed it then.  I wonder how many useful thing I have missed.
