Double Diagonal Engine
« on: July 03, 2019, 03:05:52 AM »
Model Engineer Vol. 205 is the beginning of a build article of this engine...….
http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php?topic=2887.0

My dad would like to build this engine, but his collection of Model Engineer is missing some issues. (he can only find 3 issues). I thought I remember seeing a set of plans online somewhere?
Do you guys know of anywhere he can get these plans?
Is there other plans out there with a different design?
Thanks
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

You may be getting confused with the much larger Double Diagonal Steam Engine that Helix Engineering used to do. (The company who now provides them are not reliable  :ShakeHead: so I would not advise you to consider it. )

I have not seen the drawings separately for that little one. Which magazines are you missing?

Edit: I found the article and there is no indications that there were ever separate drawings  :-\ The full set of articles are (Issue No/page no)4383/138, 4386/340, 4388/458, 4390/574, 4392/686, 4393/738, 4394/21 they are all available on line in the ME archive if you have a subscription

There was another diagonal article for a similar style engine in 2017 see attached if your farther has those.

I had a feeling that Julius may have redrawn Morgen'd design but can't see it on his website so may be on MEW somewhere if it does exist.

As Jo says post whet issues your dad has.

As Jo says, the ME archive is probably the best source since you only have 3 of the 7 required.
The designer, Mogens Kilde, used to have a website where the drawings for the Double Diagonal and other of his designs could be bought but I was unable to find it this morning.  Perhaps a more diligent search would turn it up.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I talked to Dad this morning, and he said there is a couple more places to look for the magazines. (Might have been some talk of Mom misplacing them):)
Makes more sense that he would have gave them to someone.
He only subscribed to this magazine for a few years.

What does it take to be a member online?  Do you have to have a subscription?

Jason, that's interesting there is another design of the same style.  When I get some time, I'll try to figure out how I can purchase back issues.  Do you know what the complete set would be? ( the issue numbers )

I just thought for sure I saw prints to this engine somewhere online, but maybe I'm crazy, or they are gone.

I sent Julius an email asking him also.

Hey Jo
thanks for letting me know about Helix.  I was considering that engine because it came with castings.
I think I'll just gather all the prints for the Model Engineer project.

Hello Dennis,

I built one of the Helix ones many years ago - some of the best 'model engineering' drawings I ever worked from.  It was designed by a father and son team who copied the original in the Bolton Steam Museum. The design was later bought by Brunel models.

I gave the drawings to Jo - do you still have them Jo? By all means pass them on if you no longer want them.

A lovely engine to build and a fine runner ( if you don't drop it down the museum stairs  ::)) - a good project that could, with a bit of ingenuity, be made from bar stock

If you have any questions about it I'd be glad to help

Hope that helps you and your dad a little more

Regards - Tug

Hi Tug,

I have acquired a second hand partial set of the castings - I wouldn't risk trying to buy anything off of Brunell  :hellno: He is running rather late on his casting deliveries I know of at least a couple of customers who are still waiting two years after paying for their goods  :(

The two engines in ME look very do-able from Bar Stock  :)

That is a very attractive engine design, very well proportioned. All looks do-able from bar stock.

Thanks everyone!
I have all the prints now from the one in ME.

Ramon, that engine is awesome! I really like some of the details on that engine better than the ME one.
Like the steam chest.

Looks like you really took some time with the tiny details.  I hope you really didn't drop it down the stairs.

Edit
Funny thing, My dad called me about 15 minutes after I got the digital version of the missing magazines.  He found his missing 4 issues.
