Clarkson twin compound query.
« on: March 25, 2023, 09:08:00 PM »
Hi all.

I may be able to purchase a set of castings to make a Clarkson twin compound steam engine, it's fairly large engine for hobby equipment so I'm wondering it it can be made on a Chester DB10 lathe and Chester Champiom 20 Mill?

Anyone able to offer any thoughts please?

Horizontal or vertical engine? The horizontal is small enough to be made on a hobbymat.

Thanks, it's the vertical twin compound marine engine.

I don't know the full dimensions but it is 2" and 1.25" bore so it's a fair size for my tooling.

I would have thought so,  I expect many were done on a Myford with a vertical slide for milling. The two cylinders are separate castings so not too big to bore in the 4-jaw and the flywheel is not massive as it's a marine engine. Largest parts for milling would be the bed and standards but should be within what your machine can do.

Best bet woul dbe to get the drawings from Blackgates and have a look through them first.

The flywheel on the Vertical Compound is 150mm, the Chester Lathe mentioned has a 250mm swing.

Many thanks, I'll have a think about it.

The kit comes missing a few part, the box bed being one but think the parts missing should be easily fabricated if they are no longer available to buy.

Blackgates may well be willing to cast individual parts but something like the box bed is reasonably easy to fabricate, could even make it more like a typical marine engines sole plate and cut from solid aluminium plate and mount on a couple of timers to get the flywheel clearance

Went for a very reasonable £205 though looks like not to you.

Hi Jason, I considered making a bid but decided against it, I've bought castings for a Stuart beam engine that is probably an easier build for me.
