Die Filer attachment for the lathe
« on: June 02, 2019, 06:40:13 PM »
Been busy with a health issue with my Son.    It's something we need to sort, and we think we have a handle on what it is.   but it's been keeping me busy

I started to build on something I've had on the list for a while, only because it's some thing I can start and stop when time allows....and my leg is willing!

A die filer.

Now I have had the Martin castings for a while.   I realized after I bought them, that I didn't have the bench space to build and use this kit!    You need a motor too!....so the castings sat idle, albiet fondled occasionally.

Then I saw this on the Web, Its a die filing attachment driven by the lathe.   ......and it clicked.

So I got started

As this die filer will be driven by Samantha Bell, It doesn't need a base.   So that is the first thing to come off.

Next I set up and bored the casting for the bushings.   I made up some out of bronze and put them in

I then made up a 5/8 reamer out of 0-1 ground stock and reamed the bushes to size.

I made up an arbor, and it drops right in pretty as you please.

Next was to bore the casting for a Blank MT2 arbor I bought off the bay....

And here is where I am currently..   Next is the table, I wanted to do that in lathe, but it's just too big a bite for Samantha....I'll do it in the mill

Dave,

Nice bit of lateral thinking.  I know what you mean about the size.  My recently obtained Excel Die Filer hasn't really got a home.  At present it sits on top of hydraulic lift table.

I have sorted out a selection of files for it, but now need to draw up a pattern to have a couple of arms cast to match the missing ones and get them machined.

I'm going to add a top file guide roller, and  some hold downs.

I'd like to have a reciprocating arm like the Stark as well...but I'll get it running first

Martin Model has a selection of die filer files for this machine, so I just ordered up 10

3 square
3 triangular
4 rounds

All 3 1/2 inches long

Ok   so i faced  3 1/4  inch diameter spot on the underside of the table and drilled the table 1/2 inch in the center.
Next i chucked a off piece of 3 inch round and faced it and put a center hole in     then I held the  table agaist the stub arbor with a live center.    Turned and faced the table.   Ill post some pics after I resize them to fit

Here's some pictures of the process....it went very easy.   I need to reach down to the center a little further....but it's almost done
