Thanks guys  :)

I really want to try and get motivated into building another engine. For a long time I've been wanting to build a fairly big horizontal engine but the more I look online for inspiration the more I am leaning toward building a large marine steam engine. Either way I want something of a decent size, a single horizontal will be easier but a 3 or 4 cylinder marine engine will be far more interesting and will allow me to build a fairly powerful engine utilising smaller cylinders.

Can anyone point me to some online plans for multi cylinder marine steam engines to use as a guideline? I'm not bothered if they are for a twin as I can soon double up  :)

Cheers
Peter.

You should be able to find a couple of compound two cylinder engines that were published in Model engineer in 1923 and 1924 online, probably John Tom. Rivergypsy on here has a build of one from castings and I think Julius has also done a version for barstock. These are both detailed models.

These things would have been powered by say a 10" boiler and run a small launch so don't expect much out of your 5"

Reeves also have some larger marine engines and there is also the Beaver range from Engineers emporium.

If you want something simple then there is the Stuart compound which could be made from scratch and scaled to suit what size you fancy.

Thanks, I seem to remember seeing one in amongst Julius plans but as far as I'm aware there isn't any index of his plans or anywhere where they can all be seen listed together. I think there would probably be other engines I'd be interested in having a go at if I could easily browse all his plans.

I'm not a great fan of the Stuart marine engines, there's just something about the look of them I don't like

Have you tried his website?

Both the '23 and '24 are there

Ah that's great thanks, I didn't realise he had a website. That's just the kind of thing I was looking for where I can browse through them all.

There must be something in there worth a go at building  :)

Thanks, I've been feeling unwell for a while now on and off - I thought it may help if I try to get motivated and build another engine. I want something of a decent size next so currently looking at the Julius plans as a starting point.
