Great looking wall!  Most walls ARE Planar surfaces, but that one is special!

...Just like Chris & the Admiral mentioned, thats a pretty special wall. Not many folks have radial engines hanging from them. (Kinda' jealous..)

Fantastic work Ron, great work & build thread!

Yeah, kinda been expecting that question! One option is another compressed air engine, this time an inline 4 to my own plans, inspired by the Curtiss C4 in the Smithsonian. But first I think I really want to try tackling an IC build, which will be the vertical version of the Upshur Farm Engine.

Ron

Earlier when you were figuring out what fin spacing you wanted someone asked what the holes in the fins were for. For what its worth they are not needed in these engines as they will run just as good without them.

That's very interesting, Gary, good to know. I'm wondering if Rudy put them there mainly for acoustic effect,

I ran the experiment suggested by the discussion above. Both points are supported by the result.

I wrapped some narrow strips of masking tape around each cylinder at the exhaust ports, closing them off. It made no apparent difference in how it ran, but did definitely sound different. A more muffled sound, with the individual exhaust beats blended together since all the sound comes out the back through the center of the valve. With the cylinder ports open, there is a distinct, soft bark from each cylinder, which is really what makes the thing sound so good.
Regards,
Ron

Great to know about the sound from the ports, neat trick that would probably work on most multicylinder engines.
