Spot the Difference - It grew a bit bigger
« on: April 10, 2019, 06:08:35 PM »
Well it arrived 10 past 6 this morning  (by 7:15 movers and my old machines had gone).  By 8:30 it was running. :pinkelephant:

Pic 1 old machine
Pic 2 empty space
Pic 3 a lot less space
Pic 3 closeup

It came with X and Y power feeds
Variable Speed
Automatic oiling
Power Drawbar
2 axis DRO
Suds pump
All guards

Appears never to have been used  (april 2011 machine), its absolutely silent.
.
No tooling with it originally but asked for a few bits.  Picked a new looking vice I saw on a shelf.  I suggested what else I would like

Now have all  the following
6" Bison vice  (it looks new)
Clarkson Autolock chuck and collets (imperial and metric)
0-13 Rohm keyless chuck
1/32-1/2" Jacobs keyed chuck
r8 to MT2 adaptor
Set imperial R8 collets
Couple of R8 metric collets

Now got to learn how to use it.

Jo,

It is a Fagor Innova 20i M.  It would appear to be reasonably sophisticated.  Can do all the usual, bolthole circles, angular lines, angle of parts, tool compensation, calculator, corner rounding.  Just downloaded the manual.  Looks fun!!!

The machine is a Gate PBM-2000, Bridgeport copy.

Wifes comment, "thats a bit big"  :)

Managed to get a few R8 bits on Ebay to complement the kit.

Mike, as you say a nice problem to have.  I just need to find some off-cuts to practice on before I try and do something for real.

My mate Tom bough a 1995 Bridgeport the day before, but he has found loads of R8 bits he did not know he had.  He just needs to get rid of a Harrison Universal and a Southern Engineering Vertical mill now to make a bit more space.  He has a bit of refurb to do on his machine, then  we can learn together.  As he has retired from his own engineering business I will actually be trying to learn off him.

I'm sort of classing it as a pre-retirement present and birthday present all in one.

Don't say that to the Wife  :hellno: you really need to make an additional list of things it needs and you will buy those for her as your birthday present :mischief:

Jo,

That was in my mind, not what I told her.

I've already had birthday present (Doug Hyde - Limited Edition Print)

You had better give me a list of the things you consider necessary  :LittleDevil:

I think it will get a z axis power feed, and possibly a horizontal adaptor, support and arbor at some point in the future.

Hopefully within the next couple of days if Ebay behaves itself will have a large Clarkson autolock with a few collets and another small clarkson autolock.

I need to get an R8 to MT1 and an R8 to MT3 adaptor, arbor for facing mill and get Tom to make me an arbor for the Lenz 1S Boring and Facing head (he had only just made a MT3 version.

Colin

PS are you going to the Doncaster show?

Do you have a BIG rotary table  :naughty: one needs a decent indexing and a dividing head  You might need a hydraulic roller skate like mine ;)

I rarely use my Clarkson autolocks any more I normally Use DA collet holders these days. R8's are not as easy to come by as International holders, so I would nab as many as Tom offers you.

PS are you going to the Doncaster show?

Its too far  :disappointed:

Hydraulic roller skate ??????

As originally sold for motorcycles but idea for saving your back by helping to get heavy tooling on and off the machine table: http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,5892.0.html

 I think they have realised how stupid having wheels on a high reach motorcycle lift is as the only reasonable priced one I could find is this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SwitZer-Hydraulic-Scissor-300lb-Bike-Motorcycle-Lift-With-4-Wheel-Motorbike-ATV/120640320690?epid=8026966780&hash=item1c16b934b2:g:8MAAAOSw5wJcQWpS but the wheels are not as nice as my one  :disappointed:

While not in use it also acts as a useful rolling small tools table

Jo,  if you look at the generic picture closely you will see one of the 300kg hydraulic tables with Excel Die Filer on it.

Bill thank you will do

The motorcycle tables are a lot smaller and easier to scoot round the workshop than the full sized lifting tables (which I also have  :-X )

What a great great score Colin  . Power drawbar and power feed on X and Y ; a definite plus. I whole heartedly agree on one for the Z also: just makes life easier  :lolb:. I have the 10”x54” Jet clone and love it.

I don't have any R8 machines mine are 30 Int. 30 Int is a standard CNC collet size and they use DA collets for tool holding so are "common as muck"   ;)

I mainly use the DA 200 collets but also have the 180 and 100 sizes.

What suggestions does anyone have for cleaning the sump of oil/suds. There is about 1/2” of residue in bottom. Would sawdust or kitty litter soak it up so it could be vacuumed out.

I have trammed up the head and now need some decent ‘T” nuts for the Bison vice.   Is it best to have the vice in the middle , or offset to one side so can have a dividing head or rotary table fitted on table at the same time.

Colin

PS. The vice is damn heavy. It was a struggle to pick up. I could just get hydraulic table close enough to make it not too far to lift.

Anything that soaks up the mess is good, wood chips is probably better as kitty litter is a clay and may just form a thick slug.

I have H set up with a dividing head on one end and the vice set up about a third down the other end of the table.

Jo

P.S. Did I mention my rollerskate makes moving large heavy vices and tooling around easy  :noidea:

Jo,

Yes you did mention your skate  :)  I used the hydraulic table which helped a lot, but I think I need a nice piece of wood to slide it from one to the other.

I suddenly remembered we had to absorbent Puppy Training Pads  (the cat was getting incontinent, he was 19, and just before he passed away) so thought I would try these.  Worked a dream, so now have clean sump ready for some suitable suds.

Testing the automatic oiler at moment.  It gives squirt every 30 minutes, so have left machine switched on (not running) to get fresh oil around.  I have oil coming out of left hand knee slide and left hand saddle slide, but not from elsewhere that I can see at the moment.  Hopefully nothing is blocked, it may be filling up the pipes if it has drained back since last used.

I have a feeling the safety interlock on guard may annoy me, we shall see.

Colin,
What I've done at work on the Bridgeport clone is to run the table far enough on the x axis that the oil grooves are open then pump the handle till oil comes out run the table the other direction, repeat. You might find that you cant find the size of R8 you need and an ER style holder and collets like these on the Tormach site would be handy. https://www.tormach.com/store/index.php?app=ecom&ns=catshow&ref=ER_Collets&portrelay=1 I'm not familiar with DA collets.
