V8 crank in a case
« on: April 11, 2019, 04:52:08 PM »
Didn't know what else to call this. Sometimes I just get making something that doesn't really have any purpose at all. Just something to pass the time. Where I used to work I was in the gage room at one time and we had a boxload of very tiny gears that came out of old meters and dial indicators. I latched on to a bunch thinking maybe I could find a use for them some day. I used two here. Not sure what else to do with it now.       Gary

Very cool! Nice work!

"Not sure what to do with it?" ....
Build the rest of the engine around it!  :stickpoke:

Hello Galland,

I also vote for a completed engine, that is just way cool, you have to finish that project.

Have a great day,
Thomas

I love your enthusiasm guys for me to do more with this. Originally I only wanted a crank that I could put those tiny gears on thinking a flywheel might look cute. Then I built the crate or whatever it is to hold it and be able to rotate it. I must admit then I got visualizing rods and pistons so I did some calculations and they did not look promising. The rod journals are right at .125 wide meaning the rods would have to be a little less than .062. Now you see those huge 0-80 screws holding the flywheel on. The heads on them are .096 across so way to big. I have heard that you can get 00-90 socket head screws but I don't know what diameter they are but 00-90 hex head are about .080 across the flats which is also way to big.      Gary

Yep! That's how it starts.
Do not be like the cat who wanted a fish but was afraid to get his paws wet.
