Coming along nicely and the stainless pistons should add a bit of inertia and aide in the engine running better at slower speeds. Have a great time at NAMES and share your photos with us.

Working on the connecting rods ........

Machining the blanks for the overall size of the connecting rod plus stock for the end cap. Doing both blanks at once.



Sawed off the stock for the end caps and finish machined the thickness. Set up to drill and counter bore for 8-32 SHCS.





Next setup drilled and tapped the main section of the connecting rod.



The next operations were to bore the wrist pin hole for a press fit for a 660 bronze bushing. And the opposite end for the split bearing bore.





I made two clamping / locating bushings and drilled ,reamed and tapped a scrap piece of aluminum for two shoulder bolts. This will be a fixture to do the connecting rod contour on the Tormach. As pictured, the shoulder bolts must
enter into the reamed holes in the plate for location.



Rod blank clamped in position with the fixture in the mill vise.



Milling the outside contour.



Finished contour.



Machining the bronze split bearings for the lower end.



With the bearings installed a dowel pin hole was drilled thru both halves of the bearing for a retainer pin.



The final operation was to add two .0625 dowel pin holes in each rod cap.

Machining the valve bodies and lower guide blocks and the valves.

These parts did not scale up double size as to look proper so I went off in another direction.

After squaring up the aluminum stock for both haves I rough drilled thru and did a short location bore on position in each block.



The final bore will be for a .750" x 3" long 660 bronze bushing that will be Loctited in place. This will be the liner for the valve rods. The valve rod will be .500" 303 ground stainless steel bar stock.



The locating bore is used at the lathe to accurately locate the part in the four jaw chuck. The finish bore will be completed here. Only varied less than .002" off center at the opposite end.



Pictured with the bushings installed.



At the mill the mounting holes were drilled 17/64". The air passages were drill 3/16" and a spot face for a o-ring was done. This will be where the valve body mounts to the head. The layout lines visible show where the intake and exhaust ports are drill on the sides.



There are two bushed lower valve guides the will also serve as a location for a made dog point screw to to prevent the valve rod from turning.
Machining the blocks and turning bushings at the lathe.





The guides prior to tapping a 10-32 thread in the sides for the dog point screw.



A quick over view of the valve rod. Cutting a slot in the end for a 1/2" diameter ball bearing.



A view of the valve rod with the key way milled, bearing installed and turned air passages. I will be adding the valve springs in the end of the valve block with a cap on the end. A short counter bore in the end of the rod for the spring.
The springs will not be visible when assembled.

The cams .....

The engine cams are 2" in diameter with a .750" thru bore. The offset is .500 ".
I decided on a different approach to machining than using a four jaw chuck in the lathe to do the offset. I machined the offset at the Tormach mill first to produce the " hub ".



After this operation I chucked on the hub and finish bored the thru hole.



Added two 1/4-28 tapped holes in each cam for set screws. A brass pad will be added under the set screws at assembly.
