Maudslay Marine Steam Engine on .70 scale
« on: March 01, 2019, 04:48:18 PM »
Gentlemen,
Here is a video of the Maudslay running. I played with it for hours yesterday and could only get it to run on one stroke. I played with the valve position until I finally gave up. I went back to the drawings and found that the porting in the valve is too big and therefore it overlaps the porting in the cylinder by too much. This morning I made another new valve, which I wasn't looking forward to because the ports and slots are .031 diameter and width. When I finished the valve I put a register mark on the face so that I would know where the port location was and could more easily time the engine.
I have to finish the reversing valve mechanism but putting air into both ports allow the engine to run very smoothly in both directions. I hope Chuck gets a chance to visit and see his engine.

Wonderful George. I sure hope Chuck will get to see it too. What a fine little runner and just a beautiful engine on its own.

George,
You did a very good job on the Maudslay engine. And as I have come to expect from you, when you have a problem with it you are a top notch trouble shooter. Runs great, fast slow or any point in between.

The engine is complete except it's going to need a base. Here's the video of the reversing valve working.

Here's a short video of the engine with the finished governor. With the tiny size there's just not enough weight to effectively open and close the balls. They do fly out at higher rpm's but there's not enough weight to return them to the rest position. It looks neat though.

The Wikipedia article on Maudslay is worth a look.  He's credited with making the first screw cutting lathe, although Vaucanson made the first all metal lathe a good deal earlier.

Reminds me of some of the old TV series like Connections and Industrial Revelations that went through a lot of the early manufacturing inventions and how they built on one another - fascinating stuff.
