1st Completed engine from plans
« on: February 27, 2019, 07:20:57 PM »
Although I've made a lot of parts and things that have nothing to do with engines at all. This is my 1st working engine, even though it's a Treadle Finger Engine ! Saw a sand cast one at the last Cabin Fever show (2019). I thought it was very cool and wanted to make one. Looked for plans and a member here (Phil- again thank you) sent them to me. I changed them a little bit. What I changed...flywheels- 2 piece press fit bronze and stainless, connecting rod- made adjustable, crankshaft-made in pieces rather solid bar stock, risers- bearing recess only goes half way thru, treadle- is .800" wide, pins- used drill rod for all pins. The crankshaft rod pieces has a .010" groove on both ends of each one allowing Loctite cavity. Pins are also Loctite in on one end. They run very well and my 7 yr old grandson loves playing with it !

Nice design, and no ignition woes to worry about.

Well done and I know the grandson must love it. Never too early to get them interested in mechanical things  :)

I  like finger engines also. If they are all polished up and good looking they could be fashionable to be on an executives desk. In fact I call them executive pacifiers. Its a good thing to play with when you are sitting at a desk musing around new idea's I would like to hear from anyone that has a casting kit for sale or can post up plans. Easy enough to design and build however getting the right angle and distance on the fulcrum and levers is where the problem comes in. Can drive you crazy. Congrats one good looking and smooth running engine.

Here's couple more pictures of Treadle Finger engine...Connecting rod end made from 1" brass bar stock. Didn't have any flat stock. Made the shape on lathe then milled flat, sawed, sawed the cap off, drilled and tapped for 2-56 cap screws, and final stage was drilled and reamed.
